After visiting Japan for the Sakura festival this April, I've tried learning Japanese because I'd love to go back. I've tried learning from so many channels/websites/apps/books and yours is by far the best resource I've found. You explain things at the perfect speed, with relevant examples, and you always point out exceptions with words and phrases - which is SUPER useful to get into good habits. I've actually started going back to your very first videos and am writing each one of your lessons into a notebook and studying from them :) So I'm not caught up on any of the Vocabmas videos yet, but please keep making videos like this - they're so incredibly helpful! I hope you had a good holiday season Misa Sensei! ありがとうございます

For home study, I can also recommend the Japanese reader by Oreste Vaccari. It's available on Amazon for not too much. It doesn't require you to know any Japanese; it leads you by the hand through simple one syllable words and expands from there. Just make sure you're getting the complete collected edition and not the multiple volume parts. It really helped my studies.

Misa, thanks for this video! I've encountered several conflicting explanations of Chichi/Haha/Otousan/Okaasan, and my Japanese friends (Who speak pretty good English) have struggled to explain the usage and reasoning behind these different pronouns. You've cleared it up handily, as usual! Cheers for this whole Vocabmas series, and have a Happy New Year!

Hi Misa, thank you for creating Vocabmas series. This videos are very helpful. I know you spend a lot a time organizing your content, editing these videos and entering the subtitles on the videos. Your passion and dedication truly shows on your videos. I started watching your videos for the last 8 months like Japanese for beginners series. I was able to learn Japanese around my crazy work schedule. My goal is to traveling all over Japan into the smaller cities and communicate to local people. My current my favorite city in Japan is Osaka. Also, thanks to your videos. I was able to meet local people with limited Japanese, now I made two friends in Osaka which we are communicating on LINE (thank you for your messaging and texting video). If you happened to visit back to Toronto, Ontario Canada. I love to thank you in person. I greatly appreciate all the content and videos you created.

In anime, I often hear characters call their mothers and fathers “父さん” and “母さん”, and characters such as Alphonse, from fullmetal alchemist, call Edward “兄さん” is it normal to get rid of the お and make ちゃん into さん while still remaining informal?
@fuji3d_studio6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can get rid of the "お" in the beginning for informal speech, it's just a honorific. Also Misa said that using "さん" is MORE formal, but it's not completely formal, あに is formal. Using さん or ちゃん depends more on your type of personality, since Alphonse is more respectful in general he preffers to use さん。

So in a lot of your videos you mention something you already taught in another video, I think it would be very helpful if you could put on a link in the video floating somewhere at that moment you do so, so we can press on it and be redirected to that lesson you mentioned. This way we would never stop watching your vidoes and flow from one video to another forever !O.O since you mention lessons in almost each one of your videos, which is great! right? for us and also for your viewing number (: Just a small suggestion, think it would give a nice push. Thank you for everything your doing, it does help a lot! appriciate it

ありがとうございました、先生! There're so many ways to call family members in Japanese... I'd like to also know difference between "兄貴"、"兄さん" and "兄上". I was surprised to find out that you can use words "お兄ちゃん" or "お姉ちゃん" when you are talking about your friend's sibling. I used to think it's rude. Thank you for video!

Anime characters also use "okusan" in place of a name when talking TO someone's wife (In Detective Conan, Kogoro often calls the wife of a murder victim "okusan"). Same thing for "Okaa-san" when referring to someone else's mother (in Gosei Sentai Dairanger, Rin calls Kou's mother "Okaa-san"). Kids in anime and tokusatsu also universally call all younger-looking older people "big brother" and "big sister" and older looking people "aunt" and "uncle." Also, many women in anime get offended by kids and teenagers calling them "oba-san." Anime characters also use "musume" as a generic for sexy young teenager girls and women. And what about characters who say "chichi wei?" Also in anime, some characters just say "Kaa-san" and "Tou-san" for parents or "Baa-chan" and "Jii-chan" for grandparents.
