I had a piggy called Wilma in 1969 on my 9th birthday and had her till I was 12 (we didn't know they shouldn't live on their own back then). I took very good care of her though. I'm now 62 and have 3 very pampered piggies. Gosh they're hard work but I'm out in their shed every night cleaning. To anyone thinking of getting piggies I would say, unless you can be obsolutely devoted to their care and the hard work it involves, then don't do it! Far too many guinea pigs end up I rescue centres!

The end. lol You are def not alone. . .I have met older people (no offense to anyone, I'm "older" too) who have pigs, or may be new cat humans. Piggies are def like children. They can't take care of themselves, they depend on us.

It makes sense that you wouldn't know anything about pets back then I am gen z and I don't have guinea pigs but I do have a hamster and properly care for the hamster and I'm 14 but my mom and dad take care of the cat but they don't do really good care for the food part anyways because people in society think cats and dogs can only eat boring non nutrition kibble and bits but we mostly properly care for our cat like having a cat tree and lots of toys.

I've got 10 of the poo machines. What I've learnt in support of this video. 1. If you are getting a cage, think rabbit size. But build 1 of your own,1 that fits your space. OSB board base, 3 sides and a purspex front (They don't need a roof) 2. Fights... Their will be fights, but if you have small bonding sessions with veg, they will start thinking of each other and get veggies and associate that as good. 3. All 10 are rescues, they need you. 4. Ours are friends with the gerbils, but keep them separate from other animals to avoid accidents. 5. They will scream the house down when you open the fridge and demand veg, but be strong....and say no. Hay is king, used for bedding and food. (Mine is from haybox, home delivery) 6. Supplements. One must is "critical care" (liquid hay) for the piggy when they get sick. They need to eat all the time, so if they get sick and stop eating / drinking, critical care is a boost they need until they get the strength back (you need to purchase a syringe and force feed them) 7. 1 boy and 9 girls.... Yep, his nuts are coming off. We have had the queen of the herd have ovarian cysts (size of a £2 coin) so had them removed. Surgery of any kind is a risk, so don't think you must because someone on that tinterweb thing tells you too. 8. Is it difficult? YES. Have wires, doors, brushes been eaten? YES, Are you knee deep in poo every other day? YES However, do they interact with you, say please and also give you kisses? YES, Do they purr when stroked? YES, do they say thank you by purring and running off with veg when you give them veg? YES When cleaning them out, you lock them out of the room they are in, when ready you open the door and they all run back in to their home, all happy and purring? YES. Are they so checky that they share a room with 4 gerbils in a cage,... A cage that is now padlocked shut because the guinea pigs learnt how to open the door to the gerbil cage and liberate them.... YES

We got our first piggies almost 2 years ago. We thought we did enough research, but actually we knew almost nothing, we knew enough to get 2, but had a way too small cage, learned a lot in the last 2 years about their care from youtubers such as yourself and corrected our mistakes along the way. We now have six all together and they are such a joy to have around. You are right the biggest myth is that they are easy pets, they require so much stuff and cleaning that I don't know how anyone would get them for young kids. My kids help, but I am their primary caretaker. Thank you, it is videos like this that will help future piggie owners make better decisions 🙂

Having a single piggy is only ok in rare circumstances. My piggy is one of those rare exceptions, he was abused and bullied by other piggies when he was young and ever since has been mostly afraid of other guinea pigs, but he perks right up upon seeing people. He's now 5 years old, eats good fresh veggies like bell pepper and green leaf lettuce, he has a chronic issue with bladder stones but urinary suppliments are working wonders for him. He is healthy, he acts like a 1 year old, his cage is 7 sq feet, he has constant access to hay and water and gets oxbow adult guinea pig pellets, I use fleece to line his cage, he has two mirrors and a guinea pig plush as well as shows going on quietly to keep him company. He popcorns frequently and is very friendly. The only issue I have with taking care of him is inability to trim his nails, I have hand tremors and don't want to nick him, so he sees a vet to do this. He hates being man handled, he always has, so I don't tend to pick him up much, but let him jump onto my lap from his cage. He trusts me, he gives me kisses, says hello to me whenever I come in, he sleeps comfortably, around me and my family. And he's a very silly and dramatic little boy, and very smart. Dramatic as in when he sleeps he gets cozy and dramatically lays his head down and sticks his lil back leg out like a model and if I wake him up by accident he gives me the sleepy stink eye, before going back to sleep. He's a little guy who is very well loved and full of life. And several vets have said he is very healthy. However...he is a special exception and 99% of the time people should get at least 2.

Those small cages marketted for guinea pigs DO have their uses; quarantine if you suspect one is ill, or using them for transport. They're fantastic as temporary storage. They're just not good permanent homes.

I have 2 guinea pigs that live outside in the cat run. I do bring them in if the weather gets too bad, but they do have a couple of Dogloos they can get into, just like the cats, whom they get along with just fine. I keep good quality hay out there for them, as well as fresh veggies and fruits daily. There are several water bottles out for them as well. So far, I've had them for 5 years, since they were babies. They are a bonded pair, and have babies a couple times a year, which I find good homes for. I've had guinea pigs ever since I was a kid, and was advised to get at least 2 when I first started keeping them. They are adorable and smart little pets. (Jan Griffiths).

I want to share my story. I have long dreamed of raising guinea pigs. So I collected information about them for a long time. (That's how I discovered you too) I knew pet stores were evil! So I bought them from a breeder because I was afraid of diseases, and I was raising them for the first time, so I wanted to be sure that they would be healthy). Now I already have three males. And I want to encourage everyone not to be afraid of the boy. They are wonderful! They are very cute and get along well with each other❤ so now I’m very happy to have them ❤❤❤

I had read so much about Guinea Pigs and knew that they were going to be difficult to care for, like a dog or cat even (I say more difficult than that), but until I got them, I was not sure of how hard it was to care for them. Don't get me wrong, I love it and I'd do anything for them, but waking up from a rough night of them running laps to clean up poo and pee, clean their dishes, and refill water/cut fresh veggies, clean their hay box with soap and water, breathe in a bunch of fresh hay and get it in my eye, all the while I know I have a million other things to do that day, and I'll have to do it all over again, it's a lot! But, I love them and I love making sure they have fresh food and water and a clean cage. Plus, I get major exercise in, so I'll take it! But yeah, whoever said Guinea pigs were "easy" and "great for small children" needs to see a doctor, cause they're crazy! Not to mention you have to balance their food right, inspect their poos and pee, pick them up when they don't want to be to check their feet/eyes/nose/mouth/skin/fur/etc. for any signs of health issues, and the fact that they are very costly... not something I'd want to put on a child, but they are very amazing creatures that I adore so much. Just to watch them popcorn around their cage and run laps is so rewarding! What's better is being able to hold Honey for lap time and cradle her in a blanket! She's starting to get a lot easier to handle! Especially when I can hand feed the girls and they come to greet me to see if I have food! It's very amazing! ❤ much love from Honey, Daisy, and I!

I got 2 piggies in 2017 and I took care of them as best as I could. Suddenly one of them passed away around a year and a half/2 years ago? I was of course devastated. I asked my parents if I could get another one so my remaining piggy wouldn’t get lonely, but my parents refused. I take care of my piggy extra well and try to keep him as happy as possible. We let him run around the apartment when he wants and he still popcorns around. I noticed he did get visibly sadder for a while after his cage mate died but there’s really nothing I can do at the moment. I love my piggy to death though

My daughter feels that her piggie would be fine on her own. She's pretty feisty, so may be, but. . .I had one (her roomie died), we got 2 more, and while Penelope seemed okay by herself, she was popcorning all over the place when we got her roomies. I think people don't realize how actually lonely they are without a herd, until they see it. Penelope is still the "mom" of the group, tho she's only 3-4 weeks older than the other piggies.

Thank you for encouraging people to adopt. I work at a guinea pig shelter, and the number of pigs in need of homes is staggering. We are constantly at capacity with a long waiting list of people wanting to surrender. All the other animal shelters around have guinea pigs available, too. So many people aren't even aware of this, or think there must be something wrong with guinea pigs that were put up for adoption. In reality, guinea pigs are surrendered due to financial problems, kids losing interest in them, accidental breeding, or their humans are just no longer able/willing to provide the care they need. The guinea pigs themselves are just fine, and a good shelter will make sure you get the perfect match!

It's only ok in specific circumstances. For instance, my little guy was abused and bullied by other guinea pigs at a young age. I tried to get him to befriend other guinea pigs, but he either was afraid of them or he got super dominant. Though he was mostly just afraid. I do what I can to substitute for this though, he's got two mirrors, a guinea pig plush, and shows going on at a low volume. He also gets lots of attention. He popcorns frequently, he's friendly, he's got a big appetite, he's silly, and he's healthy at the ripe age of 5 still acting like a 1 year old. Though I still say in 99% of situations to get at least 2. He has a big cage 7 square feet, he's got plenty of water and constant access to hay. I also use fleece to line his cage. He's a good happy little man. Unhappy unhealthy guinea pigs wouldn't popcorn, and wouldn't act like he does, active and full of life at the age of 5 years old.

He's 5 now and popcorns and gets zoomies and is friendly and bright. What I do for him to help with him being a single piggy is a guinea pig plush, two mirrors, and shows he likes playing quietly. 99% of the time I'd say get at least two but it depends on the piggy and their circumstances.

Ever since he was born he has just been attacking his siblings he was with when he was a baby. And they have verified that he is less stressed and more happy alone, as he is always stressed about wanting to be more dominant and stuff. He has shown no signs of depression and they said he seems very happy, much happier then he was when he was even around other pigs.

When getting a guinea pig, I recommend planning to have three. You may want to start with just two. Just know that when one leaves, the remaining one will morn and can pine to death. I believe having three is the way to go. Introducing a baby pig while others are grieving is a big mistake. If you have three and one passes, the remaining two friends will support each other and you in your grief. Hope this helps.

Hello, thank you so much for videos. I’ve been enjoying them so much. I have two males and I would like to add 1 or more piggies. I was told this is not possible. Other males would fight with them. And adding females would make my two boys fight to death. What would be your advice? Many thanks Greetings!

The sociality of guinea pigs is fascinating, I have six in two groups and they really are a lot more active and seem happier together. In regards to socialising with people four of mine (two of the girls and the two boys) I got younger, the boys are much easier to handle and much more chilled. I don't handle often and instead prefer to interact without handling. The two females who I got at 3.5 years old were owned by a family where they were dressed up and played with by a child, they don't have as much character or self determination with handling. Personally I feel male guinea pigs at least in rescues and pets at home adoption area should be castrated as it's not like there are more females then males being produced. It just means should anything happen they can be housed with females as an easier option. In terms of pets at home adoption I see a lot two males housed together, few weeks later they are then sold separately. Likely to then live alone so I think castrating just gives more options for companionship as they can then be sold either to then be bonded with a male but also housed with a female/s. If anything happens I just feel a lot safer knowing they have a better chance of having a companion. Females I feel it's too risky and they wont get the same benefit.

I can't stand it when in childrens books and cartoons they make it seem that you can just have 1 guinea pig in a tiny cage and just give them a carrot or lettuce leaf and a huge bowl of pellets! And if your lucky they might say that you should clean the cage...😒

Easy doesn't mean low maintenance. Also easy is kind of a relative term to an individual person. If you're looking forward to that doesn't need any interaction maintenance then you get a pet rock. When you get a schedule down it's fairly easy

I would agree, however I'd say it's still more work and commitment (time and certainly money) than is thought by your average person. So whilst it is relative, it isn't useful for guinea pigs to be labelled as "easy pets".

Ways to make them slightly less maintenance: (WARNING, long comment) For the last tip, it’s not %100 true. I have had multiple Guinea pigs and I found if I have them in a big cage with wood shaving bedding they are pretty low maintenance. Admittedly they are/were seniors so they weren’t/aren’t all that active. So if you do want to get your kids Guinea pigs, I suggest getting them from previous owners in their older age bc they will already be adjusted to people, and you won’t need to do too much training or taming. Also the wood shavings are nice bc the piggies will instinctively bury their pee which it the cause for most smells, also if you get Cedar wood it will not only absorb the smell, but it will also smell nice bc of the organic earthy smell. The rest of the tips are great I just thought I’d tell anyone who was disappointed. I got mine in middle school and I was very busy a lot of the time, my room had started to smell really bad and I almost had to give them away. So if you are like I was, I definitely recommend. Hope this helped 😊

Extra levels sadly don’t account to floor space as guineas aren’t agile like rats or chinchillas. If you can afford or have the space to get a bigger cage, it would be great to as you should be thriving to give your guineas as much space as you can. If not, I think they’ll be OK. Just make sure they’re getting good nutrition (plenty of hay, veggies & pellets. Squeaks has a video on nutrition) & try to give them lots of floor time if you can (every 1-3 days ideally). Hope this helped.

Go with oxbow stuff, they have a lot of non colored toys. There is this chew that is made of compacted hay in the shape of a waffle that I would recommend. Also this may not help much with teeth, but they may love toilet paper and paper towel rolls as toys. The colored stuff can be toxic, so it's best to get the non colored stuff. There is also the option to occasionally get teeth trimmed.

I have a question about lone guinea pigs. I recently had one guinea pig pass away so I only have one. My remaining piggy is on the older side and I’m not sure how much longer my existing piggy will be around. I’m hesitant to get a new one because I don’t think she’ll be around too much longer. Should I wait until my existing one passes before I look into getting more? I feel like I should wait. My piggy seems totally fine emotionally. Since my other piggy passed away she has actually because way more lively and social with me. Is that her looking for another companion? Any advice on this would be helpful.

Maybe getting some mirrors and a plushie would help? There are some rare circumstances where piggies can be single, though they're definitely the exception to the rule and 99% of the time 2 guinea pigs at least is necessary. How old is your piggy? How's her health so far?

I really find it weird the concept of a "starter pet" or a children's pet. Sure, adult supervision is always required, but NO PET is easy, maintenance free or free of responsibilities (I would say except pet rocks, but I fear people might say I'm neglectful of pet rocks), and honestly I doubt many children can really grasp the concept that your pet doesn't want to always be handled that they and need to take really good care of them. I know there's some good children out there that are taught to respect their pet's needs, but I still doubt many of the parents that believe there's a "easy to take care pet" would teach some kids that.

The one thing you said that contradicts one another is that you said people who have only one guinea say that there piggy is happy, then you say, "How do we know there happy were another species" well how do you know that they are happy with a friend? It goes both ways we don't know if they are depressed really all we got to by is actions like jot eating etc...well if that's the case then we will know when they're happy due to actions such as popcorning or certain sounds. So you cant say they are happier either way because you yourself said they are a whole different species how do we really know
