A really important part of this is that they aren't just Christian fundamentalists, they're LDS Mormon. I grew up Mormon, and there are two major things to note: 1) LDS Mormon communities are very close knit, which means that everyone is very much in each other's business. And 2) family is literally one of the major staples of the belief system. I'm not just talking "family values", but that family is core to a healthy relationship with God. To have a child who has separated publically from the church AND public problems within the marriage? That would undoubtedly be a huge topic of gossip within the church and incredibly embarrassing to the parents. ESPECIALLY if the father is faculty at BYU, which is a prestigious university that follows Mormon rules. It's literally named after the second "prophet" of the Mormon church. Basically, its one of the absolute worst communities to have an extremely public family fallout in.

I absolutely HATE when adults call children (especially very young children) manipulative. They’re not manipulative, they’re learning boundaries and how to properly ask for things they want.A four year old saying that they really like something is not them manipulating you,it’s them sharing something they like with you and maybe hoping they’ll get it. I’ve literally had to put two family members in their place for calling my niece (who is on the spectrum,so she does like sharing things she enjoys) manipulative

Can you go back in time and be my mom? My dad did the same crap to me even when he was causing me to have panic attacks. He tried the same shit when I visited last year (at 23) and I finally realized just how abusive he has and always will be. At the time I just sat there and acted like I was listening to what all he was saying given that I was stuck there and he has made it extremely clear that what I have to say doesn't matter at all. A conversation to him is him just talking at and yelling at me even though I'm now an adult. Try to explain anything? thats just an excuse. Want to have a say in anything? that is talking back. Try and tell him that what he is doing is actively causing you pain or making you uncomfortable? doesn't matter just get over it. There is more but I'll stop before I get mad about it lol. Props to you for not only being a good parent but also for putting your family in their place. The worst thing you can do is to dismiss a kid who is just trying to talk about what they enjoy since it just teaches them not to ever talk about stuff they like in the future (which is hard to fix later on once you're an adult)

That said, it's so impressive and encouraging to see Shari get out of that sort of situation and make it out the other side with support and a good attitude. It's also really nice that she's gone against her upbringing to be a more supportive and loving person. It's insane to me that she expected her 5/6 yo daughter to pack her own lunch to school. I have 5 yo little sisters and they are NOT near the age where they have the mental capacity to consistently remember to do that or even how. I'm not saying don't teach your kids independence but idk maybe do it WITH her a couple of times before she expects this kid to actually remember?

My parents canceled mine and mine twin's birthday when we were turning 11 or so. It was right when you are switching from 'invite everyone in the class' to 'invite a few people'. We were both uninvited an upcoming party and many other people didn't invite us to their birthday parties. So we never had another traditional childhood birthday party again.

Ah yes :) I was "evil" and "maniupative" at 8 too. My mom said she had to basically "tough love" it out of me. Yeah now we probably will never be as close as we would of if she didn't do that. That kids gonna grow up being hyper independent, confused, and not know the warning signs of abusive people because they think it's normal :/

Yeah, I agree. Conservatism ideology just sets people up to abuse and to be abused because of how they view hierarchies and personhood. They tend to be very authoritarian and now in US they want to push those views on to everyone.

I just cannot relate. When my daughter was 5, I learned that someone was stealing stuff out of her lunchbox. Every day, by the time she went to have her lunch, items were missing. For the rest of the year, I packed 2 of everything. Apparently, the kid got the message, because they didn't like, take all the cookies, or both drinks-they took one, left one, of everything. I never knew who the secret lunch kid was. I like to think that one period of kindness will stay with them- that someone cared. Kids have enough struggles. They don't need to be taught that. They do need to learn how someone showing some empathy feels, and maybe they will display some themselves. Otherwise, they can end up stunted and abusive, like this sorry excuse for a mother.

This kind of parenting never works for the child or the parent. You cannot control your kids to this extent and expect them to adjust to the "real world" smoothly. And your kids are going to resent you when they get older. Why would you want to ruin your relationship with your kids like this?

I'm a full-fledged adult. I still vividly remember one Christmas where I didn't receive any gifts while my ex-stepmother allowed me to pull out gifts for every single one of my other siblings and handing it to them while I tried to show that it didn't affect me and show happiness for my other siblings while telling myself that it's not about the gifts, it's about family. It still hurts. I don't want to go there, but unless you have an external reason (i.e. financial hardship, your beliefs don't align with gift giving at that time, etc.) all things that you can talk to your child(ren) about beforehand, it's an emotional abuse tactic used to exercise control. All of these "parenting tactics" are borderline if not outright abuse used to exercise control. I've experienced almost all of these things prior to moving in with my mom and I'm still working through the aftermath of it all, years later. I can tell you from firsthand experience, this is emotional abuse. God forbid family courts actually care about the children, though. 🙄 My heart goes out for these children and I hope they all know that there are better days ahead. Also, if Sherri is in the headspace to do so, help her younger siblings, if they want it when they come of age, help them to have a safe space and to eventually help each other to be better than what they were taught and find their own "truth."

I had a student that had learning difficulties (after assessment for both behavioural and cognitive difficulties he was transferred to a specialist school and he has thrived since). Despite knowing that her son had issues, and he often was unable to organise his day-to-day needs - she demanded that if he forgot to make and pack his lunch, that we were not to feed them. Unfortunately the school went with it. The end result was other students sharing their lunch with him. It made me so angry. We have pre-made sandwiches for students that needed it. The specialist school wouldn’t have let that fly though.

@@Sonnenanbeterin1991 I did as much as I could. At the time, with mandatory reporting we would inform someone in a leadership position. It was a small school, the principal did nothing. What really upsets me is that presumably nothing was done in regards to calling out the clear abuse after the lunch situation idk maybe the teachers did actually report it as theyre legally required to do n it just led nowhere but even if that was the case its sad that all those kids have had to endure so much abuse bc the systems in place that are supposed to stop these situations in their tracks are incompetent imo after that situation ideally there shouldve been a formal visit from a social worker who wouldve seen all the other forms of abuse happening n either worked w them to stop it or if it was already really bad by that point to then relocate the kids to live with other family until they can be safely reunited w their parents if its possible at all

I would hope that if their leaders see the videos they can talk to the parents and set them straight, maybe even call CPS. I believe in redemption, but there’s needs to be a lot of apologies and they need to fix what they did to their children. All I can do is be better, and raise our kids with love, respect, and unconditional love.
