The patent allowed to the Nemesis system is beyond BS imo as not only did that patent cover the actual programs structure/code and the like used to make such a system (which I'm fine with them patenting tbh) but also the entire idea of the Nemesis system as well (basically having AI that learns from the players action to counter them later on) which patent/copyright was never really supposed to allow and ruins creative progress in industries (gaming industry in this case). If a company can achieve the same idea but with their own code and programs (none connected or even based off WB's Nemesis system) they should be allowed to imo. Giving that patent was beyond stupid imo and about as bad as say someone patenting the entire fantasy genre or if Capcom patented Hunting style games after making Monster Hunter 1. Granted worse yet I can't believe the entire game industry (well devs and publishers anyway) didn't even attempt a serious appeal against said patent either given how badly it'd affect the industry.

Body Part damage is even more fun in the Mech genre. Front Mission did this beautifully. You could damage, or have damaged, arms to disable weapons attached, legs to cripple or halt movement, head to lower accuracy as targeting would go offline, or direct body shots to go for kills as the main functions, including cockpit, were in the chest. The games would balance this by giving non-chest parts lower HP, but lower accuracy to hit while the chest had the majority of the mech's HP, but was the biggest target.

Always wanted to see the nemesis system implemented in more games it was such a unique mechanic in shadows of Mordor/war that would have been cool to see implemented else where like could you imagine that in something like RDR or GTA you piss off a group and they constantly hunt you down and actually learn from how you play the game you could take out the leader to clear it and they somehow survive to continue hunting you or you get captured by the group the leader runs and it triggers a special event where you need to sneak out without your equipment possibly losing the gear you had in the process there's so many ways you could use that system because of how it works I remember in shadows of war coming across an enemy that I beat so many times and threw every trick I had at him to the point where I couldn't beat him anymore even using a mount and that was awesome it made the game challenging to the point where the guy would show up and I would run because it would instantly become a losing battle

I don’t remember what year it was, but there was a year where Madden had “QB Vision” as a mechanic; the idea was there would be a movable light cone on the screen and if you threw to a receiver within the cone, your throw would be more accurate and you could even control where the ball ended up. If you tried to throw outside the cone, the throw would be wild and might end up 15 yards away from your target. The beauty of the system was multi-level. For one, it more accurately depicts how playing QB would work, where QBs have to go through a progression of receivers and only throw within the quadrant of the field they were facing. For another, it was the first time there was ever a reason to pick QBs based on factors like throwing accuracy and awareness (as opposed to just speed and acceleration, which had always dominated), as said QBs with those attributes high would have much larger and faster moving cones. It gave you a reason to actually believe in game that Peyton Manning or Tom Brady were better QBs than Michael Vick, especially if you wanted to throw from the pocket, whereas before (and since) Madden is dominated by QBs with enough speed to evade the pass rush or be a threat to run themselves. For a third, if you were playing head to head (in person, I think this was before Madden went online) it gave the player on defense a clue as to how the offense might be trying to work a play, as you could see how the QB vision moved. On the whole it was a great but challenging mechanic and it lasted only one iteration. Now, Madden does allow some fine control on things like pass location, but nothing as sophisticated or true to life as this innovation from like, 15-20 years ago. I suspect if EA didn’t get exclusive NFL game rights (cutting off competitors like the 2K series), I think this mode may have remained as a way for EA to differentiate Madden from those competitors, but without them, Madden chose to dumb the game back down and no one else is even making NFL games.

It isn't an FPS, but for the Adjustable Multiplayer Maps the new Master Of Magic makes use of this feature, as did the Caster Of Magic mod (or Steam DLC) for the original Master Of Magic. Depending on the number of opponents you choose for your game, the random map increases in size on both planes. This is cumulative with the player's choice of map size when starting a new game. Tiny map with one opponent? Have a map size whose tiles are 1 or 2 screens wide. tiny size with 4 opponents? 5 or 6 screens. Anything above 4 opponents is impossible except in Caster Of Magic, and if you go all 16 opponents, you'll be spending about 200 turns just exploring your own plane, or 500 if you don't have flying units.

Blade mode appeared in Astral Chain (which was also developed by Platinum) albeit in a heavily watered down state. Instead of the ultra-satisfyingly mindless slicing and dicing, this could be used as a way to counter enemy attacks with the sword legion and deal a powerful counterattack as well as solve a few puzzles (though you have to be careful considering these limitations). If Astral Chain ever gets a sequel, I'd like to see the sword legion get beefed up back to revengeance levels, even if it has to be through endgame upgrades.

Its not a major gaming franchise but it is made by EA originals. Tales of Kenzera: Zau has active reload and it was released April 23, 2024. You have a melee mask and a magic shooting mask. You get 8 shots but if you do the perfect timing itll go from blue to gold. Which I assume means more damage. Its a metroidvania and not a shooter though. Still, that active reload mechanic still works in the Metroidvania genre. Or at least, it works well in Zau.

The risk, then, is that if you whiff the button-pressing, it takes longer, and the item is less valuable (and tools are less durable), or maybe you just fail to make the item altogether.
