The most important statement in this video is: “You’ll look better than 99% of all the other guys no matter where you go…” Honestly, that’s what I want the most. I want to be the one that people say, “He’s always put together well!” My motto: “It’s not always about dressing for success, it’s more about dressing successfully!” Cheers, John!

1. start incorporating monochromatic outfits. 2. cuffing your sleeve. 3. wear socks that stay up (sponsor comes in). 4. alter/tailor your shirt. 5. try non-blue jeans (eg grey/tan for summer). 6. incorporate dress trouser/slack. 7. tuck in your shirt/polo. 8. dress your contrast (opposite of point.1)

Legend. John, there's a 3rd cuff, it's the military cuff. Depending on the branch, it's all pretty much the same. Take the sleeve all the way up to the armpit. Then do executive cuff. You can either finish with folding the arm/wrist cuff down or you can roll it over the cuff. Essentially, you're making a longer short sleeve shirt. Just thought you might like it.

Pondering the reason why I believe some men kindly wear monochromatic black when they do vs other colors and of similar tone I think is due to them not really having a variety of other color dress trousers in their arsenal. And also not having a wide variety of dress color shirt to fit that monochromatic look with trouser. If your not used to dressing up, you just not going to have a wide variety of options in your wardrobe. In my wardrobe I have all the standard color trousers Navy, Blue, Black, Charcoal, Tan, Gray, Olive, Burgundy. I have various shades of all those Trouser colors/Fabric style as more than one pair collecting over time. What having a wide variety of trousers have done is allow me to make a seemingly endless amount of color matching options with shirts and shirts of different style. I can do contrast color style or monochromatic style look with all the trousers. Yes, I do have a particular favorite in wearing some trouser colors normally. But you have a lot of options in your style wearing in having pants of different colors and can wear them in style confidence. I don’t need to buy trousers much. But I keep adding shirts as no matter what shirt I buy, I have a trouser that can fit it in coordinated color.

I do the executive cuff with the gauntlet button done up - it's tricky, but gives a neater cuff, and looks really nice when there's a different colour under so you get a thin line showing👍.

Dark color shirt with lighter color pants for a slimming effect. Brilliant! Being rather short at 5’6”, I tend toward the monochromatic look. I’m not overweight but I’m not exactly slim either. I’ll give this lighter on bottom, darker on top a try. Thanks for the tip.

Any thoughts about guys with big necks and the conundrum of either having a wide “V” if a couple of buttons are undone, or look strangled with only one button undone? This is mostly an issue for me because I wear undershirts. I sometimes feel like it’s sloppy to expose all of that undershirt under a nice shirt, but one more button makes me look like my head it busting out around the collar.

Great tips, as a short buy I especially agree with the monochromatic look. It helps by taking away harsh breaks that segment your body which can make you even look shorter than you are. The monochromatic look is also great for those with a few more pounds for many of he same reasons. It’s almost (but not really) an optical illusion. I also so glad you said tuck in your shirt! Outside of purpose made no tuck shirts it just looks messy at best and lazy like you just don’t care about yourself at worst. Oh and as far as no tuck shirts I only think they’re good for casual settings and are a better fit in the summer rather than the other seasons. That’s my 2 cents anyway. I also like buttoning up my polo shirts all the way. The look isn’t for everyone but I think if you like it and can pull it off it’s a tiny tweak that’ll make you stand out a bit. Finally great illustration of a bad vs great fitting dress shirt. In my opinion the number 1 tweak is not really a tweak and it’s something you almost always mention which is great. That tweak is to wear clothes that fit! It can be tough to find perfect fitting clothes unless you fit a very specific body size and shape but if your short like me or really tall or a bit overweight it’s nearly impossible to find the perfect fit (or often even a good fit) off the rack so find a good tailor. It doesn’t actually cost that much unless you need to totally reconstruct a garment and I’ve found if you use the same tailor regularly you often get deals or preferred (speedier) service. It’s well worth an extra 10 - 15 percent imo anyway. Simple but great stuff as always. Cheers, Christopher

Love these easy tips. One question, though. You say tuck your shirts, but I have a large belly, nothing else is oversized. If I get shirts meant to be untucked, should I still tuck, thus wrapping my belly like a precious Xmas present, or go untucked until I lose about 7 more pounds and it looks less noticeable?

You might have spoken about this before John, but what's the tip for making short legs look longer?
@karlr7502 жыл бұрын
@Bruce Smith, I would consider the following details: 1. Avoid low-rise pants. Choose mid-rise or high-rise instead. 2. Ensure the pants are hemmed at the correct length. 3. Wear pants with a sharp crease down the front (for an additional vertical line). Pinstripes create the same illusion, but they work in fewer situations. 4. Wear shorter tops and jackets. For example, choose a bomber jacket over a 3/4 length jacket. 5. Wear a belt that matches the color of your pants, and avoid wearing one that's the color of your shirt (unless your shirt is the same color as your pants).

When tailoring your shirts, they should also raise the arm hole. This will remove extra fabric around the arm but also elongate the body and make you appear slimmer.
@williambarabanitz3858 Жыл бұрын
IMHO, jeans are for the under 21 set. Chinos/khakis in dark/light tan with herringbone black/white wool trousers can carry one through a decade. Shirts untucked are for slovenly pre-pubescents, devoid of parental guidance. Only black shoes are needed - one pulls-them-in with a grey cardigan or classic navy blazer, regardless of pant. p.s. CORGI SOCKS in argyle win.

I'm confused. I've heard-from other professional stylists-that a light pants coupled with a darker shirt makes short people look shorter as it kind of cuts the person in half visually (if you get my meaning).
@40OverFashion2 жыл бұрын
I suppose that could be true, and monochromatic outfits might be more beneficial. I guess I was only referring to weight proportions.
@successivedestinies72152 жыл бұрын
@@40OverFashion Thank you for your response. Yes, I agree; monochromatic is beneficial for those of short stature. When it gets a bit boring, I sometimes use patterns. As much as I dislike stripes, vertical lines create height and I also don't want to look like a lumberjack lol.
