When my girlfriend has a panic attack, "you'll be okay" can be really beneficial, in the context of "It's going to be okay, you're safe, it'll all be okay" as well as telling her to breathe, things like "It'll be okay, breathe for me baby, it's all going to be okay" can really help. Depending on the trigger, she also might want to talk about it, validation can also really help, even saying "you're valid, you matter, you make a difference, you make my life better" she also loves physical contact, and rocking also helps a lot, whether she rocks herself, or has me rock her in her arms, whilst it doesnt work for all people, it's soothing to her, helping to bring her down quicker My request would be a video on more specific phrases to help people through panic attacks, for times where you might be texting the person panicking, or it isnt a situation they can leave, in an event where they encounter a trigger or flashback and so on

My partner, while he has panic attacks also gets worried about how I am dealing with it and often says: I don't deserve to see him go through this. Which is worrisome, becuase not only is he fighting the panic attack but is concerned about all of this other spiralling thoughts.

This is exactly how my panic attacks should be resolved, don't let me ride my attack out! It has lasted for4 hours once. At school. I couldn't stop shaking, having short breath, and I was just so cold. I also want to be hugged and held, am smol so is not that hard. Just hug me please

2 days ago, i had a severe panic attack. When my bf saw me closing my face and not breathing (literally) he came closer and slowly hugged me. He didn't stop hugging until the bell rang and we had to go to our classes. He helped me getting through it and it went away nearly in 20 minutes. Just be around when someone is having a panic attack. Ask them before touching and if its ok to touch, hold their hand slowly or hug them. It really helps.

I had a panic attack in the post office a few weeks ago. I wanted to run away but I had my partner with me and he was incredible. He put his arm around me and said, " You're safe, I'm here. All you need to do is wait and post your letter, you will be so proud of yourself for not running". A lot of you who have panic attacks will relate to this but in the moment I just kept thinking no you don't understand I cannot do this. So he picked up a children's colouring book off the shelf and found a puzzle maze and he said, "Right do the maze". It sounds so silly but it focused me enough to get through it. And I did it! Small victories but when you're terrified to leave the house it's a big step. He's amazing ❤

I remember in late 2016 I had a particularly strong panic attack, followed by my first real/intentional suicide attempt (It was lame and I failed). That time nobody could restrain me from attempting because I was feeling incredibly trapped, but I remember that some months earlier while I was having another one, a really close online friend realised what was wrong judging by the text I sent her and skype called me. She just talked to me about her cats and her dogs and just her day, about the weather, whatever. It really helped to ground me back to reality and I really treasure her a lot for that. She also once dissuaded me from jumping off the window earlier in that year. Since my parents nor anybody know about my suicidal thoughts or panic attacks or my feelings of loneliness and stuff (or don't really care) , she has been the only one who helped me and I am eternally grateful for that.

I get really bad panic attacks all the time and something that I have found not useful is just to tell the person to calm down. They’re already trying but sometimes it’s impossible to just stop. Instead of saying “you NEED to calm down”, I find it helpful when people say “It’s okay to calm down. You’re safe.” this helps by giving them permission and giving them a choice of calming down rather than feeling like their being forced to be calmed down.

Diddo I am the same way, majority of my panic attacks happen to me when I am alone. Out in public I am just hypervigliant and will fast walk to get what I need to done,or I have tunnel vision and won't hear if someone tries to get my attention then when I get home I smoke a cig and I can somewhat put off the attack till later.

I don’t have them. And if I do there nowhere near as severe as some of my friends. But I’ve found distracting yourself can honestly help. Don’t run from your friends or family they’re there to help. Talk through it(what your feeling etc), or talk about something you find fun or comforting. it’s mainly about calming and distracting the brain. Hope you can find something though

Something that triggers my anxiety or even an attack is when people touch or crowd around me. I am not aware of what originally triggered me to make my afraid of being surrounded. If you're helping someone through an attack and you're with a group of people, don't surround them. Have 1 or two people take them off to the side and be sure to stay on their level. If they're sitting, don't stand over them. It can be frightening. By all means, try not to make a crowd and attract more people. That's the first step for me in calming myself down.

I remember a few months ago a certain thing that made me feel good. So I'm in a group called Theatre Troop at my school. We help and sponsor the school musical and we do an act to get everyone ready for the show. So it was our first day for the act, and we all were scared. I saw this girl go pale and she was having an awful panic attack. She was also in the actually show. Most people around me were saying, "Why are you so scared? It's just a dance." "You'll be fine, just calm down." I knew they didn't know what was happening because I was also having a panic attack, but I did a breathing exercise with her and she calmed down so much and she relaxed. The people were very impressed with what I did. I don't know, i juat wanted to share

When I have panic attacks outside of my home, I remove myself from the room and go to a bathroom (We have bathrooms for 1 person at a time here, no girls or boys bathrooms) and then I sit myself down near a sink. Then I begin counting 1,4,9,16,25,36,49,68,81,100 that helps me a lot and if it doesn't then I repeat names to myself (Can be any names from siblings to mounts and everything in between. As long as there is more then one) If that doesn't help then I repeat to myself "We're gonna be fine, I'm fine, You're fine, we're fine" until I'm calm. I have also tried to imagined that I'm trying to help someone else down. I'm NOT the person with the panic attack, I'm helping someone else. That is just a couple of ways someone could coop with a panic attack. It helps me a lot...

LikeKristen ive never gotten help during a panic attack unfortunately. I just made it through it myslef. and the reason why I havent received help is cz the teacher who I told about whats going on with my depression at that time was a male, and whenever I sense a panic attack I hide, I usuallt go to the toilet. but at some point he saw me going and I wasnt looking gd at all cz I was having a panic attack, then at some point of that day he came up to me and asked what was wrong, and I told him im getting panic attacks. and he asked me if its under control, I lied and said it was, but it really wasnt. so its kinda my fault that I didnt receive help, hiding from the public and lying about it being in control. but once I had a oanic attack and cz I wasnt breathing properly for so long, I fainted a little. I went to him cz he offered saying that I could go to him whenver I feel like I needed a break from lessons, and I did. I stayed in his office for about 20 minutes then I had to go cz he had a meeting in his office, I was really glad that he allowed me to stay in the library instead. he is literally a blessing in my teenage life ever sincr I was 13. god bless him♥♥ unlike my math teacher.. in my math class, I was sensing a panic attack coming, and I told her can I go to the bathroom, she said no. and I told her plz miss I need to.. she insisted and said no, im like miss im getting a panic attack can I go? she still said no..... she just let me be in class ans have it. which I truely found annoying. thinking about it now makes me feel more annoyed, cz in such situations u wouldn't want to stay in ur class that has 24 ppl in....

I recently had a very lengthy panic attack while sitting with a client in the psych ward after they were taken there for self harm. Being in the ward reminded me of my mother being taken away to places like that for months at a time when I was little. It was very hard bc I had no one there and had to stay strong and act normal with the client. I thought I was going to pass out or throw up after a while bc it kept getting worse. The only thing i could do was force myself to talk to myself like my partner would and keep telling myself "you CAN breathe, this happens all the time and you never die. You wont die this time".

It can be different for different people. If I am calming my friend down, I talk to her soothingly and assure her that she is going to be okay; she hates being cuddled or touched. However if I am panicking, I like someone to hold me really close and tight, but not talk.

This is a great video! I have social anxiety, and I feel it most strongly whenever I have to talk or perform alone in front of others. I'm a music major in college, so playing by myself in front of others is part of the requirements for my major. There was one time when I had a really bad panic attack during my end of semester playing assessment, called a jury, and I literally couldn't keep playing anymore. I'm a trumpet player, so not being able to breathe presents a lot of issues with my playing. My mouth also got super dry, and I was shaking really hard, and my hands felt tingly. I had to retry the end of one of my pieces three times, because I just couldn't play. Eventually, one of the professors in the room told me to sit down, and they got me a bottle of water. I drank some of the water, and they told me to breathe and calm down. That professor stayed up on the stage with me for a few minutes, then got down and told me to retry the end of that piece one more time. I did, and it was quite a bit better. Just the fact that they supported me, got me some water, and helped me calm down before asking me to start playing again was really helpful. It was great knowing that I had the support I needed, and that my professors cared enough for me to see that I needed to pause and reset.

I usually have panic attacks in classrooms, because it's closed, and there's many people and it's very triggering for me. When it happens my first instinct is to run but I have very physical symptoms, so my legs shake so bad I can't walk by myself. The first things my friends do to help is hold me and help me get out of the closed space. I also cry a lot so I can't open my eyes (it makes me dizzy) after I'm in a open space I like them to stay with me but not to stare, talk me through. Sometimes my hands get the tingling feeling and they close into a fist, so it helps if someone holds them, and sometimes put them under running water, because it makes me feel them better. To ground me, the best thing they do is asking simple things (is hard to talk a lot because of all the crying and the not breathing thing) like, what's your name, how old are you, do you know where you are? And giving me something to hold, like a wall or something

What helps me is if someone reminds me to breathe and counts out the breathing so I can try and sync myself to it. I hyperventilate when I have panic attacks so that really helps me a lot
@juliejealousy8 жыл бұрын
This is so hard for me to answer because I have similar coping strategies for panic itself but not panic attacks. I don't have panic attacks nearly as often as I used to because I take medication and consistently see my therapist but when I do, they're debilitating. I think the most important thing for me is to not be alone and it helps if one of my parents holds me and gives me my medication. Typically when I have a panic attack I become physically paralyzed and curl up into the fetal position out of embarrassment so I'm barely able to get up and get my own meds. Part of panic disorder is the embarrassment which I appreciate you described.. and that's also the fault of the stigma too. It's nice your partner helps you out of situations.. my panic disorder is largely in sync with agoraphobia so if it's too much for me to be at a public place I say "we need to go" when I feel panicky and sometimes that brings me down so I don't have a panic attack afterward. I had a friend who used to hyperventilate or fall backward and if I told her to take some deep breaths she'd stop, stand up and be cracking up laughing a minute later.. to this day I've never met anyone like that nor do I understand it because I don't think anyone with panic disorder would have a panic attack and comedown like that.

To me one of the best things is for someone to touch me. Either just laying their hand on my shoulder or taking my hand in theirs or even giving me a hug. I feel like that's the best way to ground myself. I guess it won't work for everyone, especially if you are the type of person who needs a lot of space around them, but with my attacks (which usually are more like anxiety attacks than panic attacks) it works the best. It's just important to ask the person who is having an attack, what they need and what they want so you just don't push yourself too close.

so i remember, recently at lunch at school, a person i know kept on running to the table that my friends and i were at, and he kept on annoying one of my friends. soon enough, she snapped and tried chasing him, but backed down after ten seconds or so (she also deals with anger and such). so, i went over to him to tell him to stop, and then come back to the table to see her having a panic attack. i have panic attacks frequently, but i didn’t exactly know how to help her, because i usually wait them out, or go to the counselor. but my friend is uncomfortable with stuff like counseling. so, my friend and i ended up writing stuff down on a paper to ask her questions, because she couldn’t really talk. but, now that i know how to help her in a more efficient way, i’ll do some of the thing you mentioned in this video, so thanks ^^

One thing I have learned from my own experiences, is having a friend tell me random numbers, then I repeat them. Apparently your brain can't handle focusing on random numbers, and panicking at the same time. I don't know if it will work for others, but it works for me. :)

My boyfriend had panic attacks pretty often as a teenager, but gradually stopped having them when he got into his twenties. It had been a good 15 years since he had had one, but he seems to be relapsing and is experiencing really intense anxiety and anxiety attacks (but not full-blown panic attacks), mostly centered around work stress. Because of this he has distanced himself from our relationship, saying that he needs to process by himself and that a dating relationship feels too intense for him right now. I think it's healthy for him to reserve some space for himself to think about and deal with what he's going through, but at the same time I'm disappointed that he feels he needs to back away instead of lean on me for support. I think he feels like he is burdening me and I try to assure him that that's not the case, but I don't think he believes it. I think it would be good for him to open up and understand that he doesn't have to go through this alone, but I know I can't force him to do that. Any advice?

A "code word" is a great idea, I never thought of that- I'm gonna use this with my husband who can have 2 or 3 panic attacks a day.😓 I try to distract him, talking about other things or trying to get him outside for a walk, changing his surroundings/environment really seems to help him & talking to him about other things (no questions though) helps to move his mind forward, instead of staying stuck in the terror of what's going on in his head. It helps but there have been times when he's just too far gone and talking to him just aggravates him & he tells me to shut the f--- up. But if I can recognize his early symptoms, these tactics help. God Bless

I guess I've had a few minor ones. I never thought I had an actual panic attack. I just mostly contained inside my head, with external feelings of nausea, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and racing heart, not including the whirling tornado in my brain.

My hands tingeling is the first warning and it gives me just enough time to find my medication and sit down. So listening to your body is really important.

Being alone helps me, having someone try to help me only makes me freak out worse because they freak out(especially if they aren’t aware)

I find that me and a lot of my friends need to talk about what’s happening and why they’re so anxious. Like if I’m able to focus on one thing (even if it’s a combined amount of things that caused the panic) it helps me chill out and get everything out of my system.

I usually have multiple panic attacks daily so I've learned when I am having one and I know how to deal with it. Ive taken acting classes so its easy for me and some of my friends dont even know about it because I'm so calm.

I get tingling sensations in my hands and legs when I have a panic attack. I didn't realise it was a common symptom but I feel better about it now tbh that it's not odd. And talking helps me so much especially little reminders that I'm doing okay and I'm safe. Describing happy memories also helps me a lot and puts me in a much better frame of mind.

So I've had panic attacks before, and my one friend knows phone calls and talking give me anxiety so he literally texts me through it and it's really helpful especially when we're out somewhere like a restaurant or at school, he'll like text me to breathe in and out and just be really supportive.

There is a girl at my college who experienced a panic attack yesterday and I don't think she was helped by the fact that some members of staff weren't nice. She came to see me and talked to me about it and I've experienced panic attacks before and also I have depression so I understood. The girl said that during her panic attack she accidentally ran into her best friend's class room where luckily she was the only one but she was doing a test. The member of staff who saw her I think suspended her from the college which I think was disrespectful. The girl said to me when she saw me that she wanted to run and hide from the member of staff but there wasn't really anywhere to go. I think I was able to help her a little bit but what I might do if she is up to it is to talk to the member of staff as he is the course manager of business which we both do but we are in different classes.

For my panic attacks I do breathing techniques. I breathe in rhythm of my heartbeats and eventually they slow and so my breathing slows and it feeds back until I'm calmed down

I have two co-workers and a friend who have anxiety and have panic attacks and I have been at work on two different occasions with my co-workers having one and I tried talking to them a bit, I think I hugged one, and another one I gave her a tester thing for essential oils stress relief that we sell. And I felt completely helpless. So this helps a lot in 1 myself knowing that I was doing a few things right. And 2 there are a few more things I can do and I'm better prepared.

When I have a panic attack or somebody is having a panic attack I try to get to a place where I have something I can lean against because I tend to get very dizzy. It always calms me down when someone hugs me. One main thing I do is the 5 things "game"

One of my best friends was diagnosed with panic disorder, but the the thing is she lives in AZ and I live in NJ :( Still, I'll keep this in mind for whenever we get the chance to visit each other. This was sooo helpful, especially the code word. She's never had anything like that before.

Usually when I have a panic attack, something that helps me alot is someone holding my hand. I don't know but something about that just makes me snap back to reality and slowly calm down. Also, breathing and encouraging words help alot because my brain likes to assume and think of worse case scenarios of everything when I'm having a panic attack.

When I have attacks I can't deal with social interactions. So the best thing is to recognise the panic attack and to stay away. I live with a near constent mild panic attack. I feel like I'm choking on my own skin. And my hands can't hold temperatures. when they get bed I start to hyperventalate and my heart rate skyrockets. My balenice will be skewed so I have to sit down and litterally put my hands on the ground to calm me. Most people think that the vast thing to do is to talk to me. But the truth is the opposite. I had a really bad panic attack, luckily this one has a trigger. most of mine do not. during a pole vaulting practice. I had taken off with the wrong foot and ended up stalling about nine feet in the air. It got to the point were I had to sit on the opposite end of the runway because I was about to fall over, still have not told them what was happening that day because when they asked I would always say that I'm fine.

Whenever I feel panicky or anxious I leave the room so that nobody sees me have a panic attack, nobody's ever seen me have one but I've had a lot, if I can't leave the room I hide my face and act like I'm sleeping, I can hide it pretty well

I never tell anyone if I'm having a panic attack, like I'm just sitting or standing and feeling like "Okay, my heart is about to stop" and it's obvious for my friends that something is not okay, when I cover my face, exp: lying on the school desk, when we're in the class, or hiding it with my hands, and it's simply because when I'm having an attack, I immediately start to cry and I hate when somebody figures it out. But if someone does, I definitely need a hug, or to play volleyball, these things can calm me down.

I think it depends. When I have panic attacks I don´t want to be touched at all. I lay down, try to breath, my legs, arms and especially fingers will start to shake extreamly much, I will isolate myself, the one things I know helps is calling someone I trust on the phone.

can you make a video explaining small mental illnesses or that it doesn't have to be as big as you see in media I wish something like that was there online about bullying because I always felt like my case is not so bad I can't call this bullying and I believe a lot of people have similar problems with mental health there is so much difference between different people with the same illness I like to have more awareness for this

I get chest pain and my breathing starts to get faster and I can feel my heart getting faster and louder and my shoulders and chest tingle. It's horrible. I don't hyperventilate but I usually take deep breaths often to help it. I sweat a lot too. I had one today in history but because my friends don't know I have them I didn't want to tell anyone and it lasted the whole hour😬I was so scared. I used my empty water bottle to help breathe
