Thanks for watching! 🐶 Does your puppy jump? Were any of these tips helpful?

Thank you for this video. We are in the 30 day course currently with our 10 week old puppy and it's been very helpful. I heard you say not to turn and freeze. We've found turning gaze and body so effective for calming puppy quickly. I read in Rugaas' book about this strategy and it's been helpful, particularly for my kids who get jumped and nipped at by puppy a lot. We are reinforcing her calming down with lots of praise and pets and hoping she learns this is the best way to greet. But she doesn't get any attention when jumping and nipping. How does this resonate with what you're teaching? I love the positive reinforcement method and I find it doesn't help with immediate problems (not designed for that I'm gathering). The kids are covered in scratches! Thanks again.

Most of the time the dog will persist in jumping much longer than you can sustain the "turn and freeze" position. Every time your dog jumps this is strengthening the behavior. We want to get ahead of the jumping by preventing it from happening. The turn and freeze method does not teach the dog what you want her to do instead (keep all four paws on the floor). So we recommend working with her to 1) know the times and situations where she jumps and redirect *before* she starts and 2) teaching her what you want her to do instead. The course is about to get a major upgrade! You'll see it in your account soon. When you do there will be more information on jumping as well as a demonstration of the "four on the floor" game.

Hello, My partner and I, we are planning to adopt a puppy in a few months. We are trying to educate ourselves with your videos and reading about what to do, what we need and how to train a puppy first (before we get the puppy). We do have 3 wonderful kids, and 2 of them are toddlers. I was wondering, how can the toddler play with the puppy? They are usually gentle and they know to only pat an animal for a short period of time. But can they snuggle with a new puppy ?

Great question - it'll be extremely important to monitor this closely. Most toddlers/kids don't understand the puppy's body language or when they're trying to say "no thank you" (especially when they don't want to be cuddled) and this could lead to growling or biting, just because your puppy is uncomfortable and pushed past their limits. We're working on a great puppies and kids video that will be out in a few weeks, so make sure to check back for that one. It will be so helpful! In the meantime, check out this one next for some good info on puppies and kids: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWW6nYCdbdGZqZIsi=VxbsesaCbBC_tUGE

my puppy jumps only when he greets either a human or a dog. He gets very excited and we are trying to teach him to be on 4 paw at least if not in the sit position. I hope he will get there slowly. My puppy is the best dog in the world 😀

It's great to teach him that alternate behavior. Hope you got some good tips in this video!

Our pup gets very submissive when greeting other dogs, couching down or rolling over, but once he’s comfortable then jumps up or on the other dog very excitedly. This is when he’s on leash anc can get tricky to manage. He’s a 6 month old Boston Terrier.

We don't recommend letting your dog greet other dogs on a leash. There are other ways that are better for them to meet each other. This video can give you more of an explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWcXpmVaqaShbc

What are your thoughts about putting jumping on a cue so your dog has a chance to practice jumping in an appropriate setting/ time while working on teaching your dog what you want them to do at times (like greeting,) since it's a natural behaviour?
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
Those are two separate cues. "Jump", like in an agility training session, is a fine cue. But when it comes to doorways and greeting guests, you'll need to determine what you want him to do instead ("go to your place" "sit" "stay" "go say hi") and work on that. Jumping is a dog's natural response to excitement so even if you have a cue for him to do in obstacle courses, it's not going to change his greeting response unless you give him an alternate behavior and train for it. Hope that helps!

@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you for the reply! I didn't mean for agility, though, I meant as stimulus control so you can phase the unwanted behaviour out (while teaching the preferred behaviour) Donna Hill does a much better job of explaining it in the context of jumping excitedly for a food bowl (it's a great video,) but I'd fully meant jumping at inappropriate times, and wondered how you felt about that. I'm not necessarily asking if you think we should add this every time, just curious in a general manner.

Oops, I meant to put Donna Hill did a 2 part video series on this, they're both great videos.

My Cavalier loves people. She's so cute and small most people don't mind it. I mind it because some people don't like dogs jumping on them! What's a good idea to stop her from being so "jumpy?"

My 4 month old has just started jumping up in the kitchen, around our island. We have never fed her people good. Why is she doing this and how to stop her??
@HowToTrainADreamDog10 ай бұрын
The kitchen contains a lot of scents of exciting things. Dogs are hard-wired to forage for food. With the tips in this video, you'll be able to train her not to jump!
