I’m a widow, and a senior citizen too.. lol, so being gifted a new puppy (I agreed to it), has been challenging to say the least. I’ve watched some really great trainers, and you are most definitely in my top two! I’ve had my 4 month old cockapoo for 2 months. I’ve been able to train her in several areas, and though the biting isn’t as bad, it’s still too much. This video helped make several things more clear to me. The good thing about being retired, is that I have much more time with her, to train and teach her. She obeys very well for being just four months old..but I know the nipping and biting will go on for quite a while yet. I appreciate that you don’t only tell us how to do these things, but you also explain why, from a puppy’s perspective and their instincts. So thank you for this very thorough video!!

I just got a new puppy and since it’s been a while since my other dog was a puppy, I figured I could use some of your training. As it turns out, I can just put on your videos and the little man will just lie down and watch tv. The video itself is enough to stop him from biting! Of course I’ll still follow your advice, the little man is like a piranha sometimes and I can’t put him behind a tv every time he misbehaves. The doggy school we attend follows the same philosophy and techniques you do, and with the physical lessons and your videos, I feel like I’m able to set him up for success!

Excellent video. I wish I had watched it BEFORE I got my puppy who is now almost 4 months old. Everything is going well except for the biting. And although I've had puppies before, never have I had one who bit so hard or so frequently. The worst is when he bites a spot which was bitten a day or two ago. Unfortunately , it's been very difficult for me not to yell when he bites. My arms and legs are a mass of healing cuts which bled - some profusely. I have tried time out and 'me' time out like closing myself in to the bathroom for a couple of minutes. The problem is that once he starts biting he's like a wood pecker and basically I'm trying to get out of his way but often can't. One thing I really appreciate from your video is to carry the correct toy around - that's "why didn't I think of that?" I just might have to get the air puff canister. Thank you for the video. I figured I was the only person with this problem and that I went horribly wrong somewhere....well, I went wrong somewhere but I think I'm going to be able to correct this. Goes to show how much more we (old) humans can learn especially when we 'think" we know more than we admit.

I have a 3 month old Bernie Doodle Shark! She is so full of energy and grabs everything to bite and chew. She is very smart but also very stubborn. Thanks for the tips,
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
We don't feel that dogs are "stubborn" or "difficult". Puppies may seem like they refuse to do things but it’s usually because 1. Confusion 2. Lack of motivation 3. Not enough reinforcement 4. They are overstimulated. It's up to the humans to figure out what is going on and how to approach the situation differently. Training is hard and time consuming and can be very frustrating. But we can help. Consider enrolling in our online course 30 Days to Puppy Perfection. Being in a supported FB group with other students and Zoom calls with Michele and Nicole 3 times a week can definitely give you an opportunity to get feedback on the issues you are finding difficult. This video can get you started on this topic and the online course can give you the “how to”. Thank you for the information, esp. for the 'exercise' time for puppies. I have 7 weeks old Beagle, of course she's nipping and biting my finger, my feet and even my hair 🥲 I take her to walk nearby every morning and afternoon, which turned out she always walking back to home only after maybe 20 mins of walking. Based on your video now i know maybe 15-20 mins is just enough for my puppy.
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 жыл бұрын
That's right! We don't want to overtire them, that can definitely increase the biting behavior. For a 7 week old Beagle, only about 10 min of walking is okay. You can exercise them more with enrichment and training as well

@@HowToTrainADreamDog some of the crucial stuff is not what immediately comes to mind like the time out/needing to decompress in the crate a bit. I’d never associated the biting with excess energy or over stimulation before. I don’t know if you agree with this but sowmtjjng I’ve found is that my puppy needs different textures t different times and actuallly softer toys (totally supervised) can be what she wants sometimes. I hold it and she just squishes it. It’s often after super hectic chewing in something tough. I bring in the softer toy when she starts going for my clothes. She’s never left with them though!
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын

He likes to chew and bite hands when playing but he's so well trained it's a game, I ball a fist and roll it around his snout for him to catch and he grabs it holds it for two secs then let's go but it's so soft, he's holding my fist like a egg, if his teeth do hurt I go "OW" and he releases me immediately, staffies get too much hate, he's such a sweetheart and amazing with kids

It has been heartbreaking in the first week our 8 week old puppy has brought my son to tears 3 times, pulled off his pajamas in front of the neighbors and wont play with him other than biting. I have had plenty of pups and never had one so bitey, maybe she had too many bro/sis to play with. Love your videos....I purchased the Pet Corrector but the directions say not to use it on puppies that are under 6 months of age so I'm saving it.
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new furry family member! It's important to know the pet corrector can lead your puppy to make negative associations with things that you don't even mean to create. We have a great resource to check out that may have some much more helpful tips! It's our free, New Puppy Starter Kit. Check it out: howtotrainadreamdog.com

@@wesleymartins5970 no, just that the puppy problably misunderstood the yelp with an invitation to play more, because if u yelp and then keep playing we will think that that's the noise u do when u are playing

Wesley Martins thank you so much. i'm so sick of all of this "positive. put in a sit" it doesn't work for my dog. he just wants my arm, not the toy or the sit. also, for me, if i say ouch really sharp and loud, then he usually listens
@caroltomlin88224 жыл бұрын
I have a 12 week old mini Schnauzer who is play biting my hands & arms mercilessly. My yelp just brings harder biting or a new attack on my feet or legs instead. He also bit my lip. In the attacks I am offering him other toys that he quickly snubs to bite me instead. I feel like he spends more time in the crate than with me. Feel slightly discouraged. Will get a Kong & try changing out the toys & doing the other things you said. Felt some success with a good size bully stick only used in the crate. He was biting me less & not as hard. Because he got diarreah ( really didn't think he would ingest enough to cause any issues) have had to stop using it just in case it was the cause. Doing burger & rice diet & probiotics & His bowels returning to normal.

Yes, it's important to each our puppies what is OK to bite (like a toy!) and what is not (a hand!). That way it doesn't become a habit. This video has recently been revised with some and improved suggestions! Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHOsZquFiKmEg9U

I'm amused you call the puppy a land shark. I called my puppys furry 4 legged land Piranhas or FFLP's! Your advice is right on! I've been using the same kind of techniques for over 20 years and it has not failed me yet! The secret is to be consistent and not to yell at your FFLP in anger or frustration. Great job.
