I mean, I think playing as a Templar in Assassin's Creed III was a pretty cool idea. Because you can see two sides of the story, both sides explaining why they're the good guys and the other side is keeping them from reaching their goal. The only other game I can think of that shows this idea is Halo 2.

I kinda agree. It is neat to see both sides, but I’d prefer playing as the only protagonist and choose which side to be on, then learn more about the lore depending upon your choice. I’m one of the few, but I hated Halo 2 because of the split characters. It’s easily one of my least favorite games ever. I also hated playing as Haytham. I found him to be an annoying, boring, awful character.

As an RPG fan, I'll defend the whole 12-15 hour "Prologue" bit of Suikoden V. It's great in terms of lore, worldbuilding, story, and characterization, while making things impactful and having the world feel alive. Those are incredibly important parts of RPGs, and things I like and appreciate. It's part of why I enjoy the Trails series so much.

Actually, I have to argue against the one on PLA. True, you do know how to pokemon battle and all that, BUT it has to be considered that there was not a precursor to this type of game. You weren't going into battles to catch pokemon, you could catch them yourself in the wild and there were all-new mechanics. I will agree that the tutorial could have been shortened, but for the differences between PLA and the mainline games, there definitely needed to have been a tutorial.

A suggestion for a possible video; games that were dropped by their original companies to die, but the actual development staff saved them by creating their own gaming company and obtain the licenses to carry it forward. An example of this is Warner and Turbine dropping both Lord of the Rings Online plus Dungeons & Dragons Online. These games still continue because the development teams banded together and formed Standing Stone Games and saved them for both players and themselves.

I honestly didnt feel too angry with Legends Arceus opening because I figured what without the gyms and the whole time thing, and the fact that you could catch pokemon without having to battle them that it would be much different, so I actually felt invested in the intro which is something I couldnt say about pokemon for years. Scarlet and Violet however had me ready to snap my Switch it was so frustrating. Whats worse is because the games have gotten more cinematic, the intros have gotten longer. Before I could speed and get into the thick of it in under 5 minutes. Scarlet and Violet felt like it lasted forever to leave hometown. If they NEED to have a tutorial they need to make it a side component thats completely skippable. Maybe then if its a side component and not part of the actual game they can get creative with the intro of the story for once.

I'm curious, could you do an episode about all the differences in tech and gaming from just 1 decade, 10 years, ago for the next Tues Your Own? For example... 1 decade ago everyone was still playing with box tvs and monitors and HMDI cables were just recently invented. 1 decade ago, we were still using physical discs and cartridges for nearly all of our games and the thought of digitally downloading games was just a fledgling thought. 1 decade ago, movement-based controls such as from the Wii were considered revolutionary whereas now we've got full virtual reality helmets that can detect our every movement readily available for nearly all households. 1 decade ago, the majority of people still used flip phones because smart-phones, especially ones with touch-screens, were just starting to become popular. There have been so many technological advances in just the last 10 years that it's staggering when you actually stop to think about it.

I can’t agree more with Starfield. I’m 30 something hours into it and feel the game just started, which is insane to think about. There’s still so much I haven’t even started to do let alone figure out. This can sound overwhelmingly negative to someone who hasn’t played the game ; the reality is though that there are very few games I’ve personally found entertaining enough to want to invest as much time in as I already have. I can count on one hand how many games in my 33 years of life I’ve spent 30+ hours on. I did so with no expectation of what has happened, and am now pleasantly surprised at how much more the game has opened up/expanded at this point. I’m also eager to get further into it and explore/learn the facets I’ve yet to even touch on.

The prologue video for Deus Ex: Humanity Divided (which can’t be skipped I might add) goes for between 30-45 mins where you can’t do anything while the game feeds you exposition about the events of all the previous titles. Seriously! If players want to be brought up to speed, maybe just put a selectable “Bacckstory” option in the gallery menu? Saves you a lot of player frustration right there.

Don't get me wrong I LOOOOVVVEEE Okami, one of my favs, but it's intro/prologue is DENSE, with both cutscenes, and rather minor gameplay, until you have a map to run around it. Story wise it makes sense, but it really does take a few hours before the you get world area for act 1. Personally, I don't mind, but it did make it difficult to show friends at the time, they were like, "Oh it's one of those (movie) videogames" while I try not to blow up at them during the many beginning cutscenes...

Some of examples just to explain better what I mean 1) Guild of Dungeoneering lose to the tutorial Rubber Ducky, there even the achievement "Inconceivable" for doing that 2) The Secret of Monkey Island, you really have to be willing to wait to drown. There's something similar in Return to Monkey Island 3) Baldur's gate III, you really need to be willing to die if you ignore "someone" requests to revive his dead body before something bad happens. I'd suggest Remnant: From the Ashes for this list. Oh, it's not bad for the first few hours, but it can be a bit bland blasting your way across the dull ruins of post-apocalyptic Earth using only a handful of fairly ordinary human-made weapons like hunting rifles and shotguns, before you beat either Singe or The Ent, enter the mystical otherworldly labyrinth, and wind up on the harsh radioactive sands of the alien world of Rhom. THAT'S when the game actually starts to really get good. Gunfire Games realised this when it came to making the sequel, which is why Remnant II has only a short tutorial sequence on Earth before you wind up being sucked through the world stone to one of the other alien worlds (only this time it's selected at random- I got the dead, nightmarish hellscape of N'Erud on my first playthrough).

Can't believe Final Fantasy XIII isn't on here. The first 15-20 hours are essentially a veeerrrrryy drawn out tutorial where all you do is run down empty corridors fighting whatever enemy is in front of you, while the game very VERY slowly reveals the story, opens up the combat mechanics, and locks you out of things like controlling who's in your party. After 20 hours, it's a banging time.

immediately when I read the title my mind thought of Starfield, not because of the long tutorial, but because Todd Howard said in the press release leading up to its launch that it would take hours before it gets good. Some quotes have him saying it could take upwards of 100+ hours before the game actually gets going. So thats what immediately made me think that would be in here. Hell, if you just google "takes hours before it gets good" Starfields comes up without you having to search its name. Thats too long for a game to get going. Although some players have said it was only about 10 hours before the game got interesting, but still thats too long.

As someone with over 140 hours playing Starfield, I can say that this is and is not accurate. Basically, I did enjoy the game right from the start because I enjoyed the mystery of the main quest, but as I progressed I unlocked (and am still unlocking) various mechanics that renew my interest in the game making it more fun. I would say that Starfield's progression for unlocking game mechanics is tiered to keep player retention which works well for people like me who has ADHD but probably does not work well for people who want specific gameplay mechanics right out the gate without waiting 10-50 hours depending on how you go through the skill tree. Case in point: leveling everything required to fully modify ships as you please takes a long time if you dedicate everything towards that alone, so much so that I still don't have level 4 Starship Design (one of the 2 main perks required for unlocking ship parts), not that I need it though as most of the good stuff unlocked with levels 2 and 3 of Starship Design.

Skyrim. In my first playthrough, I completely ignored the Greybeards calling me and went about exploring the entire map, completing hundreds of quests, killing nearly everything, became the leader of the Thieve's and Assassin's guilds, got fully kitted out with enchanted ebony and stalhrim gear, built my own house, got married, adopted kids, etc. I did everything the game could possibly offer, spent over 150 hours on it all..... All before I saw a single dragon in the entire game or realised what the game's story was supposed to be about. No joke, I spent over 150 hours in a single playthrough of Skyrim before I even knew about the existence of dragons. All because I ignored the call of the Greybeards at the start of the game. And do you wanna know why I ignored the call of the Greybeards in the first place? That gosh-darned ice-troll they place on the path! I saw it and couldn't kill it, so I said this is probably a late-game area and decided to come back to it later, only to ultimately forget about it. It ultimately took a friend of mine at the time talking about a dragon in the game to make me confused and wonder what he was on about. Mind, this was 2013-ish, two years after Skyrim's release and before it was next to impossible to avoid spoilers for anything because of the internet. When computer and TV monitors were still bulky boxes in all but the richest of homes.

Dragon Age: Inquisition should be on this list for the same reason as Suikoden V. One could argue that the game proper doesn't start until you get skyhold. Which the first time took me around 20 or so hours.

Oh, yeah. Any subsequent playthroughs I just got the horse asap and spent as little time as possible on the initial side stuff, lol

@@robjsmiles same, like there's no point in doing everything possible before skyhold, as it's still there after you get it

You should do, "games with the best crafting mechanics".

Oh that Kingdom Hearts 2 start put me off the game for a few years before I could gather the willpower to power through that start! 😅

Suggestion: a video about 'spiritual successor' games that did not succeed at all. (and are sometimes userped by a newer/remake version of the original but you don't need to put that part in the title.)

Games with the best tutorials and others should take note. Like legend of dragoon where you have to talk to a person or can run by. MegaMan x where it's a level that teaches through consequence of your actions.

I don't agree that HL2's enjoyment doesn't begin until the gravity gun but everyone's fun is different. What I do think is really interesting about HL2 being on this list is Valve's design philosophy is to build games that are one long unbroken tutorial. Listen to any valve director's cut and they'll explain how each new mechanic tutorial leads to another- the player is always learning in their games.

Ok so I loved Assassins Creed 3. And well the first few hours didn’t bother me at all because I played assassins creed (the first game) first followed by the second. Now if you go from the very first assassins creed game into the second you will realized that the second game has a very long tutorial where your character starts out as a BABY and then and as a young kid who does stupid things because he is young. I remember doing the race with Ezio’s brother and screwing it up many many times and thinking why I was even playing this game since the first assassins creed game puts you in the actions right from the start. From that race to doing tedious errands, I was bored to tears when the game actually started. The second time I played it I actually liked it though because I liked the way it made you get comfortable with another character. So when I played assassins creed 3 and saw that they did the very same thing but with a ton more action and a huge twist I was in love. I think that they learned from assassins creed 2 and made the tutorial much more fun to play so that players would not get bored and stop playing before it got good 🤷🏽♂️

I really don't think you can put Arceus into this list xD it was such a depart from the usual that it makes sense to teach the new features xD if it was a normal pokemon game then sure but even I who has played all the pokemon games needed to be told the new stuff so idk what you talking about bud :D

I mean... the opening sequence of HL2 is one of the more memorable parts of the game.. the gravity gun is a neat mechanic that adds something, but the story hits the ground running pretty hard and fast. Also, how could you not have FFXIII on here? It kind of has a 30 hour prologue...

My friend described Final Fantasy XIII as a good game once you get past the 30-hour tutorial. I’ll have to take his word for it, because I gave up after 20.

Its gets "free" after that about of time ig. But the game itself is good despite the many claims of linearity, that are present in every other FF game as well.

I feel like Kingdom Hearts 2 should be on the list as I think it takes 3 hours to start playing as Sora

I thought the same thing, I was just talking to my friend about it and even said before beginning the video that it would appear on the list. It does take around three hours (minimum) to play as Sora

Lol! I had to chuckle at that Dynasty Warriors comment. I'm guilty of buying at least three version of that game myself. Also, thanks for spoiler warning about Starfield!

Making me think of Warframe... the main tutorial when you start the game is one thing, but there's a major plot twist that also introduces a major ability which opens up a lot more of the game literally like 60 hours in. Like, completely changes the game from generic third person looter/shooter sci-fi to something way more unique and interesting, and with deep moral conundrums. Don't get me wrong, it blew my mind because it was completely unexpected and I fucking loved it, but also, having introduced multiple people to Warframe, most give up on the game waaay before then. There's value to being completely invested in the game before the major twist, but I also wish it happened sooner, so people could see earlier how cool and unique the game is.
