A good way to practice is bookkeeping your own finances. I've started to do double entry bookkeeping for my 2022 finances and it has helped a TON in understanding the equation and concept of T-charts. I encourage anyone who is knee deep into learning bookkeeping but unsure how to either sharpen their skills or identify weak areas to do this. Start with a bank download, create a chart of accounts for your life, and assign debits and credits to each. Then, create the financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement).

Watched a few videos and most say bookkeeper launch is the best, but what if I don’t want to start my own company? I want to learn bookkeeping to work for companies that already exist. For instance there is a small company looking for someone to do their bookkeeping in their QB online. Would BL help me learn bookkeeping? I don’t want to spend money on BL if most of the program is geared towards running your own business.

A lot of bookkeepers on KZbin are pushing tax mitigation to be included in your bookkeeping services in order to gain high profit. I don't want to prepare taxes or advise anyone. They also mention the threat of tax mitigating bookkepers taking your clients if you only offer bookkeeping. What do you think?
@FinePointsBookkeeping4 жыл бұрын
I think it's perfectly fine not to include tax prep in your services. It takes more training and expertise, and it's not always the most enjoyable. :) I think if you serve your bookkeeping clients well in a particular niche, you should be good. I know what you mean, that it could make them more competitive... but there are always people offering different/more services, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are doing a better job. Hi Phoenix! Good question. It is set up so that you are supposed to pay for the whole year, and you get a lifetime access to all the info and the ongoing content, Facebook community and help email support. Hey ! Im currently working on bookkeeping for a restaurant and the client wants to mainly track inventory. How do I account for items like sugar and stuff. They can to avoid having to manually count inventory everyday.
@gduke253 жыл бұрын
Maybe sugar and small things can be "immaterial"? If not, what do you think about weighing the sugar at the beginning of the month, then at the end, and the difference is the amount of sugar used? If the restaurant keeps good receipts, you can add any purchases during the month, and know the price paid for the sugar and treat it like a FIFO inventory item. I think this will work. I'm not a bookkeeper, but this is what I would start doing if I had to start somewhere.
@caitlinlittleford3332 жыл бұрын
I do this with my restaurant bookkeeping job. The invoices or packing slips from Sysco, or US Foods, should itemize the various products. Some suppliers even separate them into categories for you! If not, you can either create a formula in Excel, or what I found was that calculating by hand was actually faster than Excel (for me) A restaurant definitely needs a firm understanding of the overall cost of food versus paper goods versus cleaning supplies etc, so all of that has to be separated out from each food supplier invoice and added up for analysis.

Hmm, I do think that it is applicable to other programs besides QB ... it's true that the majority of people in the U.S. are using QB, so Bookkeeper Launch will phrase things like "then, get certified in QuickBooks, or your chosen software." Haha, so I can see where Xero people wouldn't love that. But, there is SO MUCH info on bookkeeper basics (debits/credits, basic principals) and running your business (clients, templates, etc), so I feel like it's still worth it. :)

@@FinePointsBookkeeping Yes, I can appreciate that. I purchased a much younger program ( also using QB) for about 1/4 of the price and it's not bad but not comparable to BL of course. So I'm hoping they offered some generous holiday sale that I can make work. We'll see. Holidays are fast approaching.🎄

Yes, for sure! What was the program you got?

@@FinePointsBookkeeping I don't want to put down the program because I really do like the founder and it's a great supportive group. I purchased Tax Savvy Entrepreneur after watching her interview. It originally was a course for business owners and she's broaden it to include those who want to become Virtual Bookkeepers. It's still growing and going thru updates so for now I'm doing a lot of basics learning on my own. It's lifetime access so I'll benefit from it's future growth.
