I've been running the Ford Triton motors for years, I love them they are dependable and have good power. Never had any troubles with spark plugs on my engines because when replacing them they were properly torqued into position. People had lots of trouble with the spark plugs blowing out of the heads because they did not torque them properly. Even if the plugs stripped the threads it is an easy fix and do not have to remove heads to do so.

As an American, I can say that the worst engines made are those relating to cost cutting as Visio says. When proper time and development is put into an engine than a proper product is made. Overall American engineers know what they are doing (most of the time) but when bureaucrats are cutting their budgets and rushing things to production, failures occur. Such is the case with just about every country's designs

The American Motors 258 inline 6 was a great engine, it would run for years and last. Unfortunately the AMC bodies were like Chrysler's. After 10 years and 120k miles the doors would fail and the hood hinges would break. If the cars had snap on bodies that could be replaced a 258 would have been good for 400k miles. (guesstimate.)

I think a lot of the American cars started to go downhill after the fuel crisis following 1973. Before that, most of the engines were quite reliable and had plenty of power for their time. But when the fuel crisis shocked the country, the car manufacturers had to scramble to make more economical cars to fit the increasingly stringent market. That's a pretty big transition from putting the biggest V8 into muscle cars and competing for the most horsepower, since fuel prices were still pretty low. It surely didn't help that import cars already had good fuel economy and were extremely reliable. That being said, the Americans had to play catch up with the imports such as Toyota and Honda. Imports were also offering a more affordable price. That being said, American car manufactures started to cut corners with their designs to keep costs down while still gaining the most profit. This ended up being the beginning to the decline of domestic cars and the rise of more and more imports, as many American cars started to show reliability issues as well as poor performance. After the 1990s, the engines started to get a little better but by this point it was too late. Toyota, Honda, and many others have already gained a foothold in the car market and starting dominating. GM, Ford, and Dodge have definitely improved on their products since then, but they are still outnumbered by imports. It is a real shame. I have always been a die hard American and I like the domestic cars and imports respectively. But how the world would be different if the fuel crises never happened.
@dimedriver
@dimedriver 6 жыл бұрын
You're also forgetting about emissions controls. Most imports were already playing with EFI in some models. This gave them a big leg up on the domestics. Carburators even modified were a bad idea for smog control.
@Omegadoomship
@Omegadoomship 6 жыл бұрын
Your absolutely right. The more stringent emissions regulations made it tough for car manufactures to meet those requirements. Fuel injection on domestic cars.was a thing back in the late 60s and early 70s, but it was very primitive and not fully mastered. Therefore, it was easier to just slap on a carburetor and call it good. The imports have already gotten a foothold on EFI, while the domestics were lagging behind. There are many contributing factors why the American cars just started to go downhill, such as trying to compete with the already lower cost of imports and cutting corners to do so. They used to be king of the roads in the United States and Canada before the imports took over.

I refused to buy a foreign car. In 1981 I needed a new car. Because of the recent Iran oil crisis I bought a Buick Skylark with the 2800 V6. The car was absolutely worthless. In 1988 I went and paid the legal fees of 150 dollars to get the lien taken off so I could sell it. I got $60 dollars for it. With all the options,and a,17 % interest loan (Thanks Jimmy Carter,) I had paid $12000. The legal fees were because I lost my job and couldn't keep up the payments -- because I couldn't get to work. Every month, I faced the choice of either paying the car note, or paying the mechanic to fix it. I was not able to buy a brand new car again until 2014, I bought a Toyota, and I will never buy an American car ever,again. Because of the Buick, I ended up driving a succession of junk for almost 20 years. I am patriotic but I have to get to work.

The biggest issue with the Vega was the silica impregnated cylinders. The engineers used a special honing process that raised the silica above the aluminium surface and then cast iron plated the pistons to protect them from the aluminium of the cylinders. The problem was, once the cast scratched, the piston and cylinder galled, scoring both. Under warranty, GM would bore the cylinder(s) that were scored and install new pistons only in those cylinders and just put new rings in the other cylinder(s). Once out of warranty, GM would recommend that the block be fully sleeved with cast iron sleeves and aluminium pistons be used, all at the owner's expense. Once that was done, there were no more issues with cylinders. One big issue they had was the early electric fan setup that didn't engage until almost 220 and a very small radiator. One summer, I had to have the heater going full blast in 90-degree weather to keep it from overheating in traffic. After sleeving the block, putting a bypass switch on the fan and a larger radiator, I had no more issues of any kind and took it an multiple 1500 mile trips in summer heat. They did have some head gasket issues, but I remember doing more cylinder repairs than head or block surface repairs. The Quad 4 was another engine with head gasket issues. For the years they were used, I could have made a good living just doing head gaskets on them, with about 25% of the Quads coming through the shop I worked in being blown head gaskets. It got to the point that people who were in the know about cars wouldn't by a Quad. At the dealer auctions they were going for a steal.

Once a northstar has the block studded for the head bolt issue, it's a 300,000 mile engine. I have a 1999 4.6L LD8 version from a Deville tore down right now for normserts and ARP head stud upgrade. It has 109,000 miles on it and the crosshatches from the original factory hone look brand new. I will be swapping it into a 1999 Olds Aurora. The N* heads breathe better than unported chevy small block 2.02 fuelie heads. Although the valvetrain is a bit complicated with its 3 timing chains, 4 camshafts and 8 sprockets, it's pretty rock solid. Notice I said CHAINS. The Aurora version (4.0) northstar with close to a stock bottom end won the indy 500 5 years in a row starting in 1997. It was naturally aspirated (meaning no turbo or super charger), produced 650 - 750HP and spun @ 10,500 RPM's. Google "Aurora indy"

I have to disagree with the cost cutting thing for the most part. A lot of the reason for us here in the U.S. having made shit engines has to do with idiots in control of emissions standards going about things all wrong. They thought lowering an engines compression ratio made it more efficient......it does the exact opposite
@CanadaBud23
@CanadaBud23 6 жыл бұрын
I was just saying that in another comment. EPA: "Implement this or we shut you down - Haha we're smart we good at fuel economy!" Auto manufacturers are like: Well that pretty much undoes everything we worked for, stick it on and get it out, to late to fix all that. Couple years later it's the same thing. Manufacturers: "Finally it works pretty good - Hit the green light we good to go!" EPA: "stick this on it'll work better! - Fuck, were saving the world! Manufacturers: "Fuck me...."

Well the Vega engine being crap was largely due to cut cutting in that the high silicon aluminum bock was supposedly lower cost than using traditional cast iron cylinder liners.
@watchman-pu7tp
@watchman-pu7tp 6 жыл бұрын
The government knew lowering compression hurt efficiency and mileage. They only cared about emissions, which lower compression ratios did reduce. Their answer to better mileage was to just go with smaller engines, which meant even lower horsepower. Those were sad days. Chrysler 440's went from a maximum of 390HP for the 6-pack, down to around 200HP in the last year, 1978. That's from 54.2 to 27.8HP per liter. My 06 Exige has a 1.8L pushing 276HP, (non-stock supercharged), at the wheels, which comes out to a calculated 313 at the crank, (which is how the horsepower was rated back in the 70's). That gives 173.9HP per liter, or 6.3 times as much horsepower per liter as the low compression 440. It's amazing how technology has improved engines.
@lelandlewis7207
@lelandlewis7207 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the government mandated lower compression, they simply required lower emissions; the manufacturers lowered the ratio so they could comply with those emission standards because they didn't have the technology at the time to handle it any other way. They came up with open-chamber heads, which are worse for power, and really, not that great for emissions, but got them within standards. We see that as technology improved, emissions went down, compression and efficiency came up and so did power. I remember when a 400 HP SB required 12:1, a big camshaft, a big 4 bbl carb, a single-plane intake, headers, big valves, big ports, and high revs having to run avgas or 110 octane. Now you have "stock" engines idling like sewing machines, getting great mileage, running on pump gas, hitting 400HP almost without effort and with factory warranty. None of this would have happened, or at least not as quickly, if manufacturers didn't have someone laying out targets for them to hit. As long as they could sell a gas-guzzling, exhaust belching cars for profit and not have to make improvements, manufacturers would just rake in the profits, and, the poster is correct, many of the short-comings are due to putting profit over quality; that is why the European and Japanese had such an advantage over North American manufacturers for many years, they want quality to sell their cars.
@lelandlewis7207
@lelandlewis7207 5 жыл бұрын
@@Patchuchan, GM was actually doing it in their racing engines too, they thought it was a good way to decrease internal friction and easily improve mileage and HP. As with many things with American manufacturers, they didn't do enough testing and the whole concept failed miserable due to the piston coating failing. If they had used a solid cast iron piston, it probably would have worked, but the piston would have been too heavy. A good example of the concept working is shown in today's hypereutectic pistons. The process is reversed, where the piston has a high silicon content and the cylinder is cast iron.

The Triton V8 wasn't really that big of an issue when you look at how many are out there and how many actually had the problem. The biggest issue was people pulling the plugs out when the engine is warm and the aluminum was softer. Make sure the engine is dead cold maybe a small amount of penetration oil and pull them out. Then actually use a torque wrench when putting them back in with anti seize and you won't have an issue.

Well, you should be able to change the spark plugs without having to go through a Druid ritual. No other engines have an issue here. One should design aluminum heads with enough thread in the spark plug holes, not to mention specifying plugs with enough thread to get to the bottom of them.

The early model Triton's had the problem with spitting out the plugs, mainly the 97-98's & esrly 99's on the V-10. I was an ASE certified tech at Ford during that same time period and we were aware of the bad GM engines as well as some pitifully bad ones we had as well. The main one that comes to mind is the 1.8 liter and early 1.9 liter Escort engines,they were worthless after about 65,000 miles. I've seen them fill the air filter up with so much oil to the point that it would dump over into the carburetor throat and just choke the engine to death. The early model 6.9 diesel head gasket failures. Yeah all the Big three have put out some really badly designed engines,but they've also made some great ones too. I still prefer American iron over foreign stuff.

Most of the problems that Ive heard from that platform are the result of people not using the synthetic oil and premium gas that they were supposed to or not knowing how to work on the VNT turbo of the Turbo IV. Properly maintained, those engine are not only reliable but highly tunable, able to push cars into the 11-12s quarter mile brackets.

I can easily agree with this list entirely. The only exception I would have would be the Ford Triton engines as I know are some excellent built V8's. The removal of the spark plugs would be a problem on any aluminum engine head and block and must be treated with extra caution and care. With the Cadillac's which is what I know very well, these engines listed are also my least favorite. It was imperative for Cadillac to develop the 4.6L Northstar 32 Valve V8 that solved a lot of issues of the HT series engines and remained Cadillac's longest produced high performance V8 engine. But proper maintenance is the biggest culprit to any engine. My grandfather specialized in Cadillac's going back to the late 1940's. He worked on all the early Cadillac's to include the V8, V10, V12 and the V16 as well as the later Cadillac's of the 60's and 70's. And the one thing that all those Cadillac's required was proper servicing of the cooling systems. Unfortunately, cooling systems is the one system that is most overlooked.

The 2.5s were better engines. I did have a 2.2 that cracked the head but the head cracks were more notorious on the Turbo 2.2s. The transmissions on them were okay as long as you didn't abuse them, like reving the engine in neutral ans throwing it into drive so you could squeal the tires. If you did this you would definitely lose reverse because it would shove the hot drive gear ban into the reverse ban and they would weld together.

They weren't bad, They were terrible. Ford got cheap in 1997 and wanted to increase production by taking shortcuts on building their engines. The spark plug port threads were just the beginning. The HEI system would mismanage the voltage output to the plugs giving some too much and others not enough and because the ports had less threads or sometimes were overly ported, the spark plugs would literally spit out of the engine. Ford did not fix this until 2008, but that was not the only problem they had. Jaguar had designed and manufactured the Triton's engine cooling system which had several design flaws causing air bubbles in the system that were almost impossible to burp out.

Why the bashing of the mod motors? They're great engines when properly maintained, and that means changing the spark plugs properly. I drove one of the Olds diesel powered Chevrolet station wagons (that was a rental, thank God), into the parking lot of a local grocery store. A group of old men were sitting nearby. As I walked by they cautioned me about all of the noise that the engine was making and that I was negligent in the car's maintenance. That Diesel did sound as if it was ready to come apart even though it was new. It couldn't even get out of its own way at full throttle. GM has had a bad reputation of trying to out-think the industry with a good number of poor engine designs, (there are exceptions like the Chevy small block V8), and then there's Chrysler's cost saving use of the Mitsubishi 4 cylinder in their line of "K" cars and minivans which resulted in a nightmare for the owners and a goldmine for the repair folks. The Cadillac owners of the 4-6-8 engines would get the electronics disabled and the people who owned the Olds diesel cars changed out the engines for gasoline V8s. The 1980s up through the early 2000s were a technological nightmare for the auto industry as they tried to figure out ways to gain fuel economy and lower emissions through the use of electronics. Being one who's been in the industry for over 50 years, I still prefer to have a car that I can service and repair at home. Anyone have a 67 Mustang or a 69 Chevelle?

While the designs share cylinder bore/stroke dimensions, the notion that the 350 Oldsmobile diesel is a converted 350 gas V-8 is completely false. The 350 olds diesel was a completely different block (much higher nickel content) Could be safely bored .125 thousandths overbore without sonic testing , Heads, intake, complete engine were not the same.. It shared the bolt circles to attach the accessories,transmissions but that's about it. After 1980 the main journals were 3" BB ones. Also roller cam, and lifters were installed. The GM genius's never installed a factory fuel and water separator in any GM diesel equipped car till 1984, They Installed weak head fasteners nor prepped the public on how to care for a diesel. By then the damage was done. Water and oil don't mix so many who filled up at other than truck stops (huge amounts of diesel fuel sales) were almost guaranteed water in the fuel. Which spelled disaster because most people did not have a clue and drove them just like gas powered cars. Poor R&D, and public awareness killed GM not this engine. I know a few that have hit 200-300k. Not bad for the worst engine GM ever produced FYI Most racing builders use the DX block to build a big cube bullet race engine so if anything the diesel is converted to a Gas engine.

SmallBlockChev, I agree with your statements, You know of what you write. The deal about poor R&D was an epidemic for the car manufacturers in the 1980s and 90s. The diesel fuel containing water is almost a given no matter where it comes from, although you're correct that some high volume diesel retailers, (truck stops) seem to be able to provide a better quality fuel with less water content. They had better, word gets around quick with truckers. During the mid to late 1980s, the company that I worked for bought two of the Olds diesel, V8 powered Chevy pick-ups for service vehicles that would log thousands of miles monthly running all across the country. Both trucks suffered lower end failures, in multiple engines, changed out through warranty. These trucks would be loaded to the gills with heavy spare parts for baling machines, (big, non-mobile units), so they were pushing them pretty hard. Knowing the guys that drove those trucks, their foot was always to the floor and the required service and oil changes, which are a critical must, as you imply with diesels, probably wasn't carried out. They probably didn't drain the fuel water separator as often as they should, either. Who knows? As for getting by with the warranty, the people who owned this company weren't angels and falsifying documents wasn't a big deal for them. Ethics wasn't in their vocabulary. I left the company before I found out what the end story was but, like you said, they probably neglected the trucks by not giving a damned. It wasn't their truck to begin with.

I worked on cars professionally for 31 years and the GM 2.2 was and still is a good engine. I had one myself that went 218,000 before the main bearing went out. I dropped a used 2.2 in the Sunfire with 91,000 on it and 7 years later it is still running. I've seen that happen with many 2.2 engines.

I agree. The 2.2 is crude and unremarkable but it’s good for 200k with normal maintenance. Pre Dexcool there weren’t really cooling system/head gasket problems anyway. Extremely cheap to maintain too.

@akio2589
@akio2589 6 жыл бұрын
All Northstars had a problem with head gasket failure, regardless of the generation. The problem was that the head bolts used too fine thread and too small a bolt for the application. It's fairly easy to fix, however, as aftermarket kits fix it with using a bigger, coarser thread bolt which permanently fixes the problem. The Northstar also had an issue with oil leaks. The entire bottom half of the block was used as a girdle to support the crank, so the block is split in two pieces. GM sealed the split from the factory with silicon. Not really much to fix this one except pull the engine and reseal it. It wasn't an issue that could be resolved with the engine in the car. Barring those two issues, however, the Northstar was efficient and powerful. It's not really a bad engine, it just has some shitty shortcomings. Fix those issues though, and it's damn near bulletproof. It doesn't sound too bad with a good exhaust either.

Ford didn’t design that engine, it was designed and manufactured by international navistar. Ford gave them one more chance with the 6.4 powerstroke but ultimately it failed worse than the 6.0. That’s the reason ford is the only company to build in house their own Diesel engine the 6.7 which is great. I’m not knocking on dodge or gm but the outsource their engines, dodge from Cummings, and gm from Isuzu. No smoke, though. I do agree I prefer the 4.0L, though, if for no other reason than because it is a Straight Six. I love the straight six, and it chafes me that you can't really get one in anything domestic anymore. They should have left the 4.0 in the Wrangler, and it was a bad day when Ford discontinued the 4.9 (300). Chevy had a good modern straight six in the Trailblazer, but they killed it off when they replaced the Trailblazer with whatever front-wheel-drive sh*t they replaced it with. Late 90s Chevy 3.1L for FWD. Another cost cutting mistake - the two lower intake manifold gaskets was made of hard plastic - when it would leak, coolant and oil would mix together - which can ruin crank bearings. Absolutely no indication of this damage occurring except oily sludge in the radiator. Aftermarket gaskets were far superior - if you caught the issue before your engine was ruined.

I had the HT4100 motor in my 87 Cadi Sedan Deville. It ran decent when it was running good but then the block casting is so thin that the block ended up cracking at one of the water jackets and leaked the coolant out and then proceeded to overheat and ended up either cracking the head or blew the head gaskets. I tried to get an engine replacement for it because the rest of the car was in great condition but I was only able to locate 1 engine but the guy refused to sell it because of the notorious problems that the engine had and he didn't want me coming back to him saying that he sold me a POS engine, so I scrapped a just about perfectly good car. It was pretty sad. The head bolts are also about 2 feet long because they ran down the side of the motor block instead of in the engine block. It was GM's effort to reduce engine weight is what I was told.

Not only are the triton engines known for throwing plugs its one of the few engines I have to use a piece of rubber hose on the end of the plug just to line it up and get it started vs others I can use the spark plug socket to start them. Every v6 and v8 ford of this era will do that. I use blue Loctite on the plugs and typically have the owners replace all the coils at the same time as they usually fail after new plugs. No issues after that besides the plastic intakes failing. The Dodge 2.7 omg was a total pos and they continued for way too long. Water pump replacement involves a timing chain job too as it is chain driven and is incredibly expensive. They aren't long term engines either they have such a high failure rate all the way up to 2010 in the 300, magnum charger lineup. Not to mention the water outlet housing is prone to cracking and leaking. You really should have included the Northstar engine lineup. Anybody that knows these engines hates them when they need work. Prone to head gasket failure and crazy expensive oil leaks def avoid them. Sure they have amazing power and decent mpg but long term not so great.

I'm curious though how these engines, especially the small displacement high output EcoBoost Ford ones will hold up when they are 5-6-7 or even 10 years old. A lot of 70's and 80's cars are still around due to their simplicity. I'm not sure that will be the case with today's Hellcats, SHOs, Raptors etc., which is a shame, because the average person can only get a hold of one used.

Vega's problem was head gasket tech was not good enough for a good seal between cast and aluminium and the radiator only holds a gallon of water way under cooled.They had it lined out by 1976 but it was too late damage was done. The earlier models also suffered from air pockets during the rustproof dipping process that left untreated metal exposed to rust quickly. They were in a hurry to release the car and screwed up. The first year didn't even have a glove box. I've restored 2 one kammback and one hatch. I still have a dealer brochure for the 76 vega.

The Oldsmobile designed quad 4 was GM 's First high volume 4 valve per cylinder engine (2.3 ) liters . In the 1975-76 model year the rare and limited edition , Corvette priced Cosworth Vega had a lotus designed 2.2 Liter 122 cu in 4 valve per cylinder head engine . Both of those engines were definitely better than the regular Iron Duke Pontiac engine and Chevy's disastrous 140 cu in unit...

Don't even need to focus on performance engines. Ford's Ecoboost 4 cylinders are crap on gas, but great on reliability and power. Same with the EcoBoost sixes and the Coyote V8. And can't forget the good old LS. Sure it's a stone-age pushrod engine, but how many cars with over 6 liters of displacement can claim to average 21mpg combined?

The Olds 350 @2:40 had many issues, not the least of which was being mated to the lightweight THD-200 Trans, but I bought an absolutely Loaded 1982 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham in '86 for $550 bucks because the original owner got scared off the Diesel. That car was a Cadillac (back when that meant something) in everything but name. In the few years I drove it before some drunk slammed into it while parked at the curb, I never had a bit of trouble with Bonne. I pugged in the block heater in the winter; I paused to let the glow plugs do their thing B4 cranking her over; I always kept the tank near full, which wasn't a problem with Diesel being under a dollar at that time. I was aware of it's faults and took steps to maintain it...I still miss that Bonneville

The Olds diesels weren't just unreliable in their initial production runs, they were obscenely underpowered. The V8 maxed out at about 100 HP, which isn't much of an engine considering the 4,000+ pound land yachts they were putting them in. On the other hand they did live up to their high fuel efficiency promise, according to the MotorWeek Retro Review of an 1982 Olds 98 Regency Diesel it did get over 30 MPG on the highway, and you can find that review on KZbin to see for yourself.

a lot of the GM quad 4 engines weren't all that bad though under powered the quad 4 2.4L was the one well known for trouble while the 2.2 push rod based quad 4 engine (used in the corsica and caveleer/sunfire) is a much more reliable unit though early on had head gasket problems due to the coolent eating the gaskets resulting in GM switching over to dex-cool (that early on in its life gained the nickname dex kill as it was prone to developing sludge blocking cooling passages blowing out head gaskets (GM 3100 3.1L and 3400 3.4L V6 being two such well known problem cases) on this list as well should have included the GM 3100 multi-port/3400 SFI V6s these engines are prone to bending push rods, valve train lack of lubrication problems, heads, head gaskets, spark plug fowling, coil pack trubbles, being under powered in many vehicles they were put in (2000-2005 chevy impala, venurer/transport minivans) the engines are also known for rod barring problems and require regular maintanence scheduals to be adheared too strictly or there will be an expencive repair bill

Toyota four cylinders were also prone to oil sludge. Because of their poor crank case ventilation they also are notorious for oil leaks. I think there are many more engines that belong on this list but then you would have to include many of the Japanese and European engines from the 1950's through the earlier 1990's. Everyone knows about the 5.4 Triton V8 spark plug issues because Ford sold so many of the damn things but that same issue was present on many manufacturer's engines that had aluminum threaded spark plug holes. Especially when they had high mileage service intervals. The 5.4 Triton is also easily remedied with helicoils and will easily perform under extreme conditions for well of 300000 miles once properly done. As you may know, it never actually hurt F-series truck sales.

Both Fords and GM products are Trash, coming from experience because they are always the ones consistantly in the shops. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers. 😉 However I will give ford credit for a few of their older engines, the 300 L6, 302 V8, 351, 390, and 460 V8's These were rather indestructible! To the Chevy 350 fans, sorry but they werent a great design. Biggest mistake was the close placement and bad sequencing of exhaust valves in the heads causing cracks between combustion chambers, this was very common. Heads often have to be replaced because of this.
