Remember those commercials that ended with, “Have your Mom or Dad order one now”? They weren’t marketing to parents they were activating the ultimate marketing strategy: kid-powered pestering. The ad wasn’t just selling a toy, it was planting an idea, a mission for kids to undertake. Kids didn’t hear “call this number” they heard, “This is your destiny.” Suddenly, they became pint-sized lobbyists, equipped with the facts (aka jingles) and the passion (borderline desperation) to convince their parents why this toy was the one thing standing between them and eternal happiness. The genius? Parents didn’t even realize they were the real audience. By the time their child was on their third rendition of the toy’s catchy slogan at 7 a.m., they were dialing that number just to make it stop. Looking back, it’s hilarious how transparent it was. But as kids, we thought those commercials were for us. Turns out, we were just the unpaid interns of an ingenious ad campaign.
