That's why Alex Tumay eho mixed early Metro and Travis stuff said he was not into rendering the stems in FL, rather he was bouncing the trhu the AD converters into a PT session...probably bcz clipped 808's from FL sounded better without exporting them but rather recording them thru the converters. What's also wierd, there's a daw called MadTracker, which was coded by Arguru who also worked on early FL( deadmau5 made a song in his name),..anyway, that daw definetely sounds really good and had cool distortion...vocals sound crisp..

I've done extensive tests, making the same beat with the same sounds and parts in Ableton, FL and Protools and the Daws absolutely sound different. One could make a case for FL and PT sounding exactly the same but Ableton sticks out like a sore thumb. Ableton just has less depth and its darker off top. Very easy to hear. I'm listening on PMCs in a treated room.

here's something that barely gets brought up but I believe to be relatively true: the UI of each daw impacts how you perceive sound. FL has smoother animations, richer colors than Ableton, therefore we tend to perceive sounds from it as warmer/punchier whatever. Meanwhile Ableton has a colder color scheme by default so the opposite is true here.
@nosohoentertainment4642
@nosohoentertainment4642 3 жыл бұрын
If that's true, it's important to consider the user's opinion on the UI of each software to determine their expectation of the sound. For example, I think Ableton looks more professional, whereas FL looks like a video game. Based on just that, I would subconsciously differentiate the DAWs in a different way than you described.

Another faulty thing about Fl Studio a lot of people don’t realize is that if you add Fl Studio Eq or other Fl plugins, there’s a slight gain added like by +1db. And the Automation effect can really effect the overall sound of the mix (if added on the master) that gives off a very subtle “warping sound”

How about sample rate conversion algorithms? If the sample is in another sample rate than what the project I'm working on, even alone in Ableton I get different sounding hits depending on if "Default SR & Pitch Correction" is set to high or normal, and also if I drop it into a Simpler, it sound different. And yes I have exactly matched levels and the Simpler is playing an original pitch. It's audible to me and I have also proven the difference with a null test.

I think the reason why people think FL sounds different is because of the “circular panning law”, which if you check and uncheck it you can hear a difference like compression. FL specifically states that this shouldn’t cause a difference in sound but I hear different? I dunno, correct me if I’m wrong.

Hey man, ive been having a few issues with Ableton I feel like you could put to rest. When I use sampler for 808's in ableton, it feels like the timing/groove gets messed up when you have a wide range of notes (like at the end of a measure). I suspect this is warping ( or lack of warping) making the transient hit a little slower or faster as the note is being transposed up/down. Basically i feel like when i try to make 808 roles/licks the timing doesn't sound right even though the midi notes are in the right place. It seems like in fl 808s and high hats just come out smoother for some reason. There's also an infuriating clicking that happens when 2 808 sampler notes are too close together. I have been trying to fix this for a long time, still can't figure it out. The only info i can find is to turn the attack, and that doesn't fix it.

Logic only handles 24 bit audio not 32 bit float so when talking about clipping it actually could sound different when talking pure audio clips. Another thing to point out is if we aren’t just dropping audio clips onto the timeline but actually loading them into samplers, things can sound very different between DAWs especially by default settings.

Clipping brings distortion which can sometimes actually sound nice, especially on kicks and 808s. A lot of producers use it in their production to their benefit. However, this can be replicated with a soft clipper or some other distortion effects. Try those out and see

Can you explain why everyone on Reddit says to get that “Pyrex whippa” 808 sound... he uses spinz, cut out knob, boosted , mixes into soft clipper loudly??? and let’s his 808 peak at 3db?? Is this just some idiocy being spread? I thought essentially 90% of the 808’s we hear (ie: nick mira using FL limiter, trav using limiter + TRacks clipper, Pyrex using soft clipper etc) are being clipped nonetheless ... mira talked about how none of the producer community understands clipping (I can vouche as I mindlessly copy people’s mixing method every other week lol) ... am I dumb and this is entirely different ‘clipping’?
@isaacneuton10
@isaacneuton10 3 жыл бұрын
Pyrex doesn’t use the soft clipper nor does he master his beats just levels and eq the master. Clipping in terms of db is just when a sound a peaks past 0db. That can cause some distortion but I think it can sound good sometimes. Nick mira actually mixes his beats like a mix engineer hence he levels and limits the beats. I think Pyrex usually has his beats tracked out in pro tools for more control when mixing vocals. I seen a lot of 808 mafia do this. There is no right or wrong way to mix tho as long as it sound good.

they will sound different when you put samples in sampler. FL’s sampler is more compressed and thats why drum “hits” harder. Ableton default sampler setting is not suitable for 808 and so ableton user must know basic engineering in order to sound as professional as FL.
