80's Commercials Vol. 31

These commercials aired on NBC during the 1988 Olympics on September 17th, 1988. Thanks to my aunt and uncle for recording this!

1:45--Kind of strange that I don't seem to remember that Murphy's Oil Soap commercial. Supposedly it ran for a long time, and I've used that stuff for years when I do my spring cleaning. 2:40--Interesting to see MASH cast members doing a commercial for IBM. 3:43--I was amused with the way a product for infants (Huggies) parodied the Olympics medals ceremonies! 4:43--Sadly, I was 4 months too young to vote in the 1988 election.

Man , I was probably close to those kids age during this time , I was born in 1988. I have to tell you from my standpoint , it was a scary and intriguing time to be a baby.

As for the Shearson Lehman Hutton ad, you can not only scratch Lehman off of there, but you can scratch Shearson off as well, as it was absorbed by Smith Barney.

OMG, I had completely forgotten about Bill Cosby shilling film!! They ran that Murphy's Oil Soap ad for at least 10 years. How strange, the MASH Advertising Agency! Shearman/Hutton- why did the guy throw a spoon into a cup of black coffee? What was he using the spoon for, I wonder?? I loved Empty Nest. One of those shows I wish they would show on one of my 600 channels.

It's definitely the same firm. "Shearson Lehman Hutton" was a merger with American express and other firms that lasted for a few years.

Technically, Isuzu did "bring back" Joe for a short time between 1999 and 2001. As a side note, since there's a Dukakis ad in this set, during one of the '88 debates Dukakis said of Bush, "If Bush keeps it up, he's going to be the Joe Isuzu of American politics."

Am I the only one that uses contac lenses for more than a week? They're expensive! And I remember that commercial...that, and "let us spray!" :) Now, companies don't want unions like Walmart! Mention union and they fire you. Times have changed!

I miss David Leisure AND Empty Nest. The horrendous tracking, while...horrendous...is fine. It gives even more character and charm to the content. Every time I watch "Gorillas In the Mist" from now on, I will be waiting for Sigourney to scream "Get away from them you bitch!" instead of "Get off my mountain."

So, IBM probably spent a small fortune to hire the cast of M*A*S*H, then put them in an ad where they spent most of the time hiding behind a plant, while the audience slowly realized "Hey, that's the cast of M*A*S*H!", while forgetting what they had all gathered to advertise. I can now see why IBM was in serious trouble in the late 80s. I'm pretty surprised that the Empty Nest ad didn't mention that the show was a spin-off of The Golden Girls.
