@anteshell
@anteshell 6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. The locks seem to be brand new. If the tolerances are anything to go by, brand new locks are harder to open even with a designated key. As the lock wears out in usage, it will become easier to open. Propably most of the Lockpicking Lawyer's lock are already used, so naturally most locks are easier to open and thus shorter videos.

I think the comparison being made was to an "old" PS lock that was essentially new. I would suspect that overtime what you say is true, but only by a small amount. Brand new "other" locks have pretty poor tolerances out of the box and that leads to bad pick performance... I'd suspect that over time they would get worse, but they inherently are bad at the start.@@anteshell
@jttech44
@jttech44 6 жыл бұрын
@@anteshell If you keep your locks well lubricated they will be much, much harder to pick and won't wear out of tolerance appreciably. The usual treatment is some graphite spray lubricant. The fact is, most locks are horribly neglected and do wear out, but that does not have to be the case. If you're renting a storage unit where you cannot provide your own lock, it's wise to clean and lubricate your lock at least yearly to keep it in good working order.
@anteshell
@anteshell 6 жыл бұрын
@@paclockpres.9805 You might be onto something with your first point on the lock's age. However, you are wrong about the locks wearing out. It actually is pretty fast, but of course depending on how many times you turn your key in the lock. In my house I got Abloy Exec lock which is predecessor of Abloy Protec of which Lockpicking Lawyer said is too much for his skills. In fact Exec is extremely common in where I live, thus I got plenty of experience of it. I know for a fact that brand new lock is wery tight around the key and the mechanism's sharp corners makes the usage hard with a key. Within a few weeks or at least after a month, the sharp corners in the lock and the key will grind down such that the lock becomes very easy to open with a key. However, those locks has very high production values so the tolerances are much tighter than in your average pad lock, so that may also play part in the initial hardness of usage. Of course, pad locks usually wear down their initial thightness slower, than front door locks due to much less usage. To add a bit of a context to my comments: With the initial hardness of usage I mean that the internal parts have sharp corners everywhere. The parts are finished such that there aren't any cutting or molding artifacts left that could deadlock the mechanism, but the corners in those small parts are left as is. The are sharp and tend to tackle to each others especially in high quality locks that has very low tolerances and that makes is harder to use. Especially with a pick, since it might be very hard to distinguish between if the pin is stuck due to actual lock mechanisms or due to the sharp corners getting stuck. Those sharp corners will quickly wear out in micro level and that makes the lock much easier to use with both key and pick. I did not mean the macro lever wearing out which happens in the actual mechanisms loosening up the tolerances. That, of course, is usually very slow as you said.

@@paclockpres.9805 Great job improving on this though. IMO if it takes LPL more than 30 sec to lock it, it will be above the avg criminals skills. Any lock, cough masterlock cough, that can be raked open is absolute junk.

I push a short hairpin piece of spring wire up into the keyway on my locks. I have a little hook on my keychain for pulling out the wire when I am ready to open it. If you don't know its there you can't get a pick gun or key into the slot. Most thieves also would not have the very small hook handy to pull out the wire even if they knew it was there. Probably overkill but we did have a bunch of locks opened by someone with a pick gun one time.

It's not quite as overbuilt as my 20/80, but a 20/80 is in the vicinity of $50. At that point, cost-awareness is pretty much out the window. Color me impressed. The only thing I would add, Is maybe a paracentric keyway. PS: the lock came spotless. Only my diskus locks came that way. All my other discs, enough oil to lube a car. 👍👍👍👍👍 Great job

Can't wait to get that accomplished feeling when I finally pop it open. Also the round shape is really pushing me to get a vice grip to hold it in place because holding it for long periods is no fun, especially trying to keep the tension right. We debated going with stainless steel pins to make this sort of attack more difficult... but every enhanced/improved feature means more cost to the consumer. In the end, everyone involved felt that all of the features we put in were drastic improvement over any other disc lock out there. But drilling a brass cylinder will get the job done on any padlock!

@@paclockpres.9805 I agree, and you need to have realistic expectations on the lock for its intended usage. We have several hundred of these kind of locks on vendors. The reality is, you don't want to make it impossible to get into some machines because the amount of damage trying to get in outweighs the loss of what's inside.

Mr. Lock Picking Lawyer, when you’re using top of the keyway tension, how much space do you have to leverage your tensioner? I have a U-HAUL disc lock, and when I try top of the keyway tension I find there’s only about .25” to rest the tensioner on before I contact the first pin. I’m not sure how you’re getting the tension needed to turn the shackle in this case. Any information would be greatly appreciated 🙏 Thank you for sharing your expertise.

I wish I remembered the brand, but years back I'd rented a storage unit from Uhaul for about a year and they had a similar(looking) lock that was a mandatory purchase to put on your unit, there was room for a second lock of your own, but they would require you used theirs too. Their stupid locks would rust shut and then they would try to charge you a huge fee to cut them off. So they got you coming and going on top of your rental fees. The lock cost like $30 to buy and they wanted $100 to cut it off. I went to home depot instead and bought a $20 bolt cutter, left the tags on it, used it once to pop the lock and returned it for a refund without a scratch. So glad we don't need a storage unit anymore.

Security pins are just differently shaped. Standard pins are just a cylinder, where common security pins have some manner of cuts in them (spools are like a thread spool, thin middle and wide ends, serrated has several notches alternating between wide and thin). A false set is where the lock is set into a security pins notch instead of the actual split between the drive pin and key pin, causing it to cease instead of unlock. Binding just means exactly that, its binding. When turning the core, it ceases on the pins. From what I know, usually only one or two pins are actually bound (depends on locks tolerances), where the others a free moving. When they are bound, you can feel when either the key/driver split is reached or a notch in a security pin is reached (hence the click, the core turns a little further and another pin is bound). I'm by no means an expert, but thats the jist of it

Why you used bottom of the keyway tension on the second lock raking, but when you were picking it or receiving the first one you used top tension?
@johnpenguin9188
@johnpenguin9188 6 жыл бұрын
Midaspl good question. From rewatching I would say for raking he wants to maximize his speed and direct access to the pins, on the first one it doesn’t matter because it’s such junk. For SPPing he wants maximal range and ability to manipulate the pick and top tension allows access to all the room at the bottom of the keyway to move the pick around.

Also, when you're raking, you will tend to drag a top-tension bar out with the rake as you move back and forth. Easier to rake with the tension bar at the bottom if there is enough room.

The second keyway is much narrower, tensioning it from the bottom would restrict access. 🙂

Midaspl Different keyway... I could talk for a long time about tension tool selection, and I probably will at some point. 👍

I can’t imagine trying to pick one of those while attached to the locker, especially if the front of the cylinder is facing the wall. Gotta drill out my wife’s this weekend after the cheap one broke and jammed. Looks like I’ll be buying a set now… all I have is a cheap rake and thin tension bar.

The first lock I noticed that you used top of the keyway tension to rake it. The second lock, you used bottom of the keyway tension to rake it. To single pin pick it, you used top of the keyway tension. Would raking with top of the keyway tension make a difference?

@@lockpickinglawyer Indeed. As you've said previously, 50% of lock picking starts before you touch your picks at all. Knowledge of the lock and how to attack it, is just as important as your tools and skill.

I know it’s been several years, but both my coworker and I watch your videos and I recently purchased the lock picking set from covert instruments and he challenged me to pick this lock. It’s been about 40 minutes and I am struggling.

Can you also pick this upside down since that would be how the lock would be hung?

I have one of these I used for my first attempts at raking and picking. It seized up exactly the same way and I thought it was because I was depressingly bad at raking. I'm elated to see it's actually because it's a good lock and I shouldn't be able to rake it or pick it yet.

It seems like the question to ask for any lock isn't 'can it be picked', but rather 'how long will it take to pick it'.

That is alot of tension (ie fingertip yellow) how you don’t brake your picks is way beyond me. Some of the spring tension on these cores is hard for me to overcome and still interpret feedback forget about it! Nice lock I would trust it, few locks make this guy pass the stack more than once😎

So where would you rank this lock compared to all the other discus keyed locks that you have reviewed before? Would you rank it just slightly below the abus 20/70 but higher than the rest of them or where exactly? Do you still consider the Abus 20/70 the best keyed 70 mm discus lock or are there any others that you believe in your opinion are superior and where would you rank all the various combination discus 70 mm locks compared to all the keyed locks that are all 70 mm that you were comparing against each other in all your videos before?
