Just did this on my 83, including the grill. Getting everything aligned was a challenge. On the headlight buckets I got from eBay, they came from Thailand. Had to slightly oval the holes in the body to get the bucket into position so the bezel would align with the grill and body--on both sides. On the nut inside the fenderwell, I used a nut and lockwasher accessed through the side marker light hole using a pair of long-reach needle nose pliers. It was a pain and required a helper. On the driver side, the little bracket spot-welded onto the headlight bucket was not in the correct position--just slightly off; I had to drill out the spot welds and re-weld it into the right location. The earlier model grill also attaches differently than the later one--had to buy more clips and use four of the old screw-type clips in order to get the grill to lay flat against the core support. Changing the grill is necessary to avoid there being a big gap on either end of the grill because of the different way the headlight bezels are shaped. Anyway it is all on now and looks good but was VERY time consuming to do correctly. Decided to change to the earlier one-piece bumper as well and that will be even more work because the brackets are different (old ones are NLA in OEM and aftermarket) and the filler piece at the back of the bumper is also different and also NLA. The grill and headlight bezels were both made by Tong Yang. Considering that these were all aftermarket parts from halfway around the globe, I am not complaining. I just want to point out that if you want a really nice result, you are going to need more than basic hand tools.

You should post the part numbers for the conversion: headlight buckets, grill, lights, and trim pieces?

Years old already, but great tutorial. I got a whole different car, but thanks to this video, I believe I can do it too! 😉

You can get that 3rd bolt through the marker light hole.

You could always use nut inserts, so you dont have to pull the fenders

I have a 1981 and therefore factory with round lights however I've changed to the Hella H4 removable bulb style as well and I wouldn't choose anything else! Don't lose the rubber boot that seals up the rear of the unit... they can be hard to find and expensive. Pro tip... if you buy cheap imitation conversions the clear glass part will often be plastic. You do not want plastic. In fact I liked these so much that they were originally on my GMC truck but before selling the GMC I swapped them out for the original sealed beam.

Where did you order your round bezels?

I have an 88 pickup to do this will i have to have to order a specific grill to do this or will just the regular stock grill work fine?
@GunsGearsBeers5 жыл бұрын
catchdogs9210 I’m not sure, you’ll most likely have to modify your core support and/or grill to make it fit correctly. Post 83 pickups never had round headlights so the round headlight bezels might be tricky to get them mounted up, but anything is possible!
@catchdogs92105 жыл бұрын
Well did you change your grill because you had to or just because you wanted to ??
@GunsGearsBeers5 жыл бұрын
catchdogs9210 um, to do round headlights? I “had to”...or I could have just left the whole thing square. This video is a matter of “preference”...nothing “had to” be done, I suggest you find something on your actual generation of pickup, or go out in your garage, grab some tools and figure it out :)

catchdogs9210, I have the same year truck as yourself. Did you have any luck with the conversion?
