The MBTI Personality Test (aka "16 Personalities") is a very well-known and widely used test which claims to be able to give you a "freakishly accurate" analysis of your personality type. In this episode I take the test, explain the reasons for my answers, explain some vocabulary and give my thoughts on the test results and the test itself. Includes plenty of expressions for describing personality traits, behaviour, ways of thinking and feeling and the subject of psychological testing.

I'm so glad that you took the MBTI test as I'm a "personality nerd"✌🏻. My test result was "INTJ" . I've taken so many MBTI tests to make sure of my result and I do recommend everyone to do so if you really want to find out your true personality. I also recommend checking out Frank James's 16 personality videos to get better understanding of all sixteen types.

😅 I don't sleep during your episodes Luke, I usually listen to them while walking the dog and then pause them until my next walk. Regarding the test, I tend to agree with you because tests are unlikely to accurately determine our personality 100%. They will probably be able to entertain us and help us stay positive and believe in ourselves in some situations where we need support and find it difficult to answer some questions at a particular moment. But in the end, we quickly forget about the results.

Great episode, lots of useful vocab for learners. I personally liked this test, I took it twice with a 4 year gap, and of course there’s no way I remember what I answered 4 years ago. My result is consistent, and I could it very accurate and relevant. I don’t know, maybe I got lucky or perhaps I was more open minded and enthusiastic and did not disregard questions as being stupid. Anyways, doesn’t harm to play around with it.

Hi Luke I enjoyed listening to this episode and your elaborate, witty lecture. I fully agree with your summary. The personality descriptions are clichéd, and it's completely incomprehensible what benefit companies gain from using this test. I found it amusing to see you take the test because there were many questions where I also asked myself how to interpret them and where I would place my answer on the scale. And the result: haha, you are a 'multiple personality' 😅. I think the test is a bit of a fun experience and a way to talk about ourselves with friends, like with tarot. And I also think that you have to know yourself quite well to answer the questions. Does it make a difference if you answer the questions quickly and without much thought or carefully? I can share a horoscope story, by the way: During his time as a postdoc in the late eighties, my husband and three of his colleagues bought a horoscope from Astrodata based on the principle ideas of C.G. Jung. At the time, C.G. Jung was quite popular among psychology enthusiasts. The four friends all first read their results for themselves, thought that there was much truth in it, then they all read the text out loud to the others and each description fitted more or less to all of them. The Barnum effect sends its regards. Dear Luke, I am a big fan (which I am not used to being). Being retired, I look forward to coffee (not tea 😄) with Luke's podcast every morning and am actually making progress with my dusty English. Thank you, dear Mediator!

Hello Luke, thanks for your new episode!😉 It's really interesting and I like it so much. 😆 Though I've heard about MBTI many years ago, but I had never taken the test until I found your video about that. Before I try to take it I believe that I will got a introverted and finally not suprised I get a result of ISFP-A. what I want to say is that I totally agree with you about that the MBTI Personality Test is pseudoscientific, because there are over 8 billions people in the world, and human being is a complicated social animal, affected by their different surroundings and many other factors, how can it just be concluded into 16 types of Personalities, but we can use it to find ourselves thinking or feeling, although It will change anytime anyway. 🤔

I've taken this test for the second time (the first was in 2022) and both times is the same result(mediator as you, Luke). I couldn't remember my answers apparently. Well, I think it's ok if it's changing over time but it's strange that it's so different for you over short period of time. So we can withdraw that it depends on how strong you relate to any personality type. Maybe there are more personality types which were not listed in this test and it's needed some upgrades

Dear Luke, this is a comment about many episodes together because I’ve started it when I was listening the episode 871. I must admit that it took me a few days to finish it, but I have to say that I didn’t become a skeleton listening that amazing, funny and long episode. I loved it. However, it took a quite long time to write the comment, and then you released episodes 872 and 873, which I listened to and I also enjoyed a lot. The way that you analyze the MBTI personality test was amazing. So, now it doesn’t make sense to write about the 871. But I wanted to send you a comment. In fact, when I am listening many of your episodes, I feel like writing a comment, but sometimes I don’t have enough time and then I end up not doing it. Anyway, better late than never. This is a comment that I want to share to you about the episode 782, when you talked about Paul McCartney. Before the comment, I want to explain that I’ve started listen to you around 2018. So, I haven’t listened all your archive yet. Sometimes, while I am waiting for a new episode, I choose some old episode and listen to. As a Beatles fan, the episodes about them always interests me. Paul is my favourite Beatle and I had the pleasure of going to his concert last December here in my city, São Paulo - Brazil. Anyway, what I want to tell you about the episode 782 is that your description about how do you feel about him in the rambling part at the end of episode (1:19:00 to 1:24:00 minutes) is very similar the way I feel about you. When I was listening it, I realize that you put in words my feelings of admiration and why I am a fan of you and of your amazing work in this podcast. I feel as if you were a friend, even though I don’t know you. You are someone who I really enjoy spend time with. I know that you are a normal person like me or your other listeners with problems, virtues and flaws, highs and lows. At the same time, I think you are not really an ordinary person, because of your ability to make me laugh, feel emotions (e.g when your baby was born - that episode was very touching), make me enjoy English even more, and make me feel happy when I understand almost 99% of your content, makes you and your show special for me. You really grab my attention. I think you are a funny guy and you know how to tell stories in a such adorable and funny way. I also love to listen your stories, your rambling episodes, your comments about everything or nothing at all, and also your guests, friends and family. In addition, I would like to suggest one episode for you where you could tell us about your ten favourite Paul’s MCartnery songs in the Beatles and tell us what do you know about those songs and your ideas about what they mean or what Paul wanted to tell in those songs. I want also to congratulate you for the one million subscribers and for you KZbin award. You really deserve, because your podcast is spectacular. Sorry for this rambling and long comment. I hope that make sense for you. My English is not as perfect as I wish yet. I wish you and your family all the best. Best Regards, Alessandra

Oh, Luke, my dear. As your 15 years of good friend (although it's oneside friendship), I've always thought you would be INFJ for sure, I mean, for the SUREST. I cannot accept this! lol You were supposed to answer each question right away without contemplating so that your-natural-and-instinctive-self could respond before your-analytic-and-overthinking-self intrude your head like that, which was actually not so supprising 🤣 Listening you breaking them all down and thinking alllllll the possible situations was so funny. However, I really hope you re-try that test again maybe in a few weeks or months. As an extremely inquisitive and determined ENTJ-A, I cannot settle for this. 🧐 Next time, please ask your lovely wife to answer the questions for you on behalf, I think it will give you much more objective and accurate result. Anyway, thanks for sharing that, Luke 😍

Hi. Interesting, as usual. And provocative a bit - invites to discussion. Here are some of my thoughts: * I feel awful as you talk about the negative types. Every one fits to me. Is it the Barnum effect? (I appreciate your creativity and humour, however it touches me somehow) I don't like to think about people that they are toxic. I'd rather say, that their behavior is toxic or maybe they are involved in toxic relationships. * Is it wrong to make people feel good about their personality, to direct their attention to their strengths and inspire them to grow? What for would any test make people think that they are bad?
@LukesEnglishPodcast
@LukesEnglishPodcast Ай бұрын
The test is supposed to accurately read your personality type. Whether that makes someone feel good or bad is nothing to do with it. I think the reason this test is successful is that it makes people feel good, but not because it gives accurate readings. I agree that making people feel good is ok. Nothing wrong with that. 🙂 But this is supposed to be an accurate descriptor of personality type not just something to make people feel good about themselves. Do you really see yourself in all those negative personality types which I made up? I hope not!

The MBTI is a pseudoscientific test - I agree. But personality tests are made to describe someone's type, not to judge. If it explore your image, it would tell us, for example, about the natural color, structure of your hair, whether it is thick or sparse, curly or straight and where it grows. It's not how you style it or what you decide to do with it. And without using pejorative words. You will never know everything about yourself or anyone. And as humans, we are more or less curious. What others know about us is also important to us, because we function in society. These days we want to know each other faster especially when it comes to get people to work and to have a big probability to fit them to the job - here is "the big five test" a useful tool. I don't have anything revelatory here, just chaotic thoughts. Again, thank you for the opportunity.

Luke, thank you again for the good English content. In this episode, there were many adjectives to learn that can be used to describe people. I agree with you that this is not a reliable and valid test. But I have a critique for you. I believe that your approach to evaluating some questions is not correct. For instance, you assessed the question about drawing people's attention based on the efforts you make in your job. However, I think that you aim to draw people's attention at work based on the definition of your job, not your personality. In this case, you should have answered "no" to the question. There are a couple of questions you approached like that.

But I enjoy my job (which I choose to do) and I enjoy doing stand-up. Both of those things involve being the centre of attention (not always as a teacher in class). So, I like drawing attention to myself, but then sometimes I don't like it. Why isn't my job part of my personality? It's not completely imposed on me, I choose to do it.

I did not think that way. Then you are right. I withdraw my criticism. :) @@LukesEnglishPodcast

Good job! You live quite long to understand how simple life is when studyed from the end... There's no magic pill, as always, and there no ready answers for a person's questions and doubts... all just to be found out on his own... But there are always people ready to lable you whatever they feel you are...
