The only thing that turns me off to SBG videos is favortism. I don't feel like I am ever seeing a neutral review. Not saying the channel is bad, but that is why I normally click elsewhere given multiple "Next video" options. I don't like seeing people down talk a car/brand that I love and have put a lot of time into. Don't get me wrong! I love Axial to death! But I have a varied fleet! This is the only reason I don't spend much time on this channel.

I have three SCX10's, and two RC4WD D90's.. and now, just got two TRX4's (for me and my son) and I will tell you, that for me.. this truck is by far... BY FAR the most "fun" out on the trail, and the rocks. Yes, the tires suck, yes the body should be repainted.. but, thats how it goes with anything. The first thing I did was replace all the screws with stainless, and did a FULL tear down so I could "rebuild it" my way with proper grease etc.. and what I found, was a VERY simple truck. It's not complicated at all. Yes, there are a few extra servos.. LOL.. thats not a problem for most people. For $25 they can all be replaced.. and it adds a scale real factor with the diffs, and high gear that no one else has, and is very addicting after you use it for a while. To be honest, I have not touched my other trucks since this came into the picture.. they just sit. I think the best way to do any "review" is to wait. Wait, and own this for a longer period of time before sharing too many subjective thoughts. See how you feel in 3 months, 6 months, and a year later. Everyone wants to rush out videos and reviews.. but, it makes more sense to sit back and see what happens. Lets see how the cable system works over time, lets see how the gears last etc.. but, assuming good reliability.. then, this truck is actually in another class vs. anything else out there at the moment..

Great opinion, and counterpoint to my review. Fair to say, nothing here was rushed out. I spent a lot of time with it before delivering my opinion. All good, we're all allowed to have differing points of view. For me, all the tech is nice, but takes away from a pure experience. Thanks for watching, and commenting!

Yes the Traxxas micro servos and be had for $18-20. Yes give this truck some time. I've had mine 6 months with no mechanical problems. I did replace the steering servo with a high end Savox waterproof servo and added a Castle BEC 2.0 waterproof BEC so I can run the steering servo and other accessories at 7.4 volts. And I also enjoy the TRX-4 a lot.

I agree, been driving a lot of crawlers and love scale. Have a Gelände 2 D90 but when I saw this one and got to try it man it was a lot of fun.. I just got one 2 weeks ago and its a blast! The locking diffs are really fun because I always try without until im at the point where I need to engage it. But like all crawlers/scalers there is a toooon of options and upgrades to make it your own :-) bit disappointed over this half biased review. I love Axial too and have thier kits as well (think I have 15-20 rcs). Ive always been hating on Traxxas but this kit I couldnt stop thinking about. They raised the bar in the crawler scene, dont hate on new/innovative technology - embrace it! Cheers from a swedish veteran rc-dude and KYOSHO-fanboy :D

This is an entirely different Matt from the more recent videos we see. Is that a hint of edge I detect?? Good to see you showing off a bit of bite here. Your newer videos are so clean of trash talk they border scripted- this has a very 'real guy with a passion and opinions' feel to it. Neat to see these earlier days of the channel. Short time viewer, first time commenter. Keep up the great work and thanks for your contribution to the hobby.

I like your reviews, but it is clear that you are not a Traxxas fan, and are looking for a reason to not like this truck. Being able to unlock the diffs on the trail on this truck when locked traction is not needed tightens the turning radius so ridiculously, that I can't understand you not liking this feature. I get liking trucks that are simple, but this truck has added features that are reliable and work. I was surprised with this truck, I think this is an insane first trail truck release from any brand. I think they killed it.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 6 жыл бұрын
Not the case at all. I love my UDR. The fact is, I don't like all the gimmicks of the original TRX4. Tighter turning radius or not, it's other downfalls outweigh what benefits that might have. In this video, (and I can't remember, forgive me) I think I wish that Traxxas would release a budget, or simplified version - and wouldn't you know it, they did. I'm all over that one, and plan on picking one up soon. It's certainly a good release, but definitely geared towards the hardcore Traxxas fan, giving them an entry in the scale/trail market.

I absolutely love my trx4 defender out of every rc i've ever owned! The option to lock and unlock the diffs is amazing, the two speed for when you just want to go is amazing, the details to me, are down right bad ass. I feel again in my opinion that traxxas really thought this one through!! At the end of the day it comes down to preference and thats just what it is. Traxxas does have one heck of a good customer service as well which has always been my experience. Anyhow, had to add my 2 cents. And yes they did kill it!!

I own the Defender. My 2nd RC vehicle ever. First one was a present when I was a kid. The fact that I can switch from high to low is awesome. I can be out on trails and get the fun of racing it around, even if it’s just 15mph. I can drop it into low and do some amazing hill climbs. The non-locked and front lock are great in high speed, while front lock is great for the majority of climbing. Knowing I can drop it into for wheel locked and roll over just about anything is amazing. I’m able to find hills I can’t even climb myself, but the Defender will go up them with no problem. My only complaint about this vehicle is the one many have expressed, no windows. I so wanted to make an interior. I’m planing to buy the adventure body to replace my red one. It comes with windows. Interior is gonna be so much fun.

As a scale builder, don't you think that having selectable diff locks, hi-lo transmission speeds, and body roll, you get a lot closer to that 1:1 feel? Is being "scale" just a esthetic thing?

I really love the 2-speed low gear/high gear ability. It's like having a crawler/cross county rig in one truck. I don't use my other two Axial trucks. It actually feels more like a real truck. I'm also liking the solid feel and the sounds the motor/gears make. Also, fully waterproof (not just splash proof).

Interesting review, I have to say this model appeals to me the most because the 'gimmicks' as you put it, are so familiar to me coming from full size off roading, having high and low range as well as selectable lockers is a big drawcard when entering the scene from a 1:1 background. Although I'd be looking to replace the Rover body with a Toyota one quite early on, preferably with a model I've owned.

Sorry man, but your totally an AXIAL fanboy. Lol you even have their shirt. Options are great as far as rcs go, you don't always need simple, and as far as AXIAL go, you have too upgrade the hell out of them to make them a good truck, this is a trail truck, and a damn good one, but I agree with the window stickers.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
I guess my subtle level of comedy was lost on you. No worries. I'll heartily disagree with you on the amount of upgrades required to make an Axial truck competitive. You can take a stock kit SCX10II and compete in any event - without a single change.

I did just that, build the scx10 2 kit when it came out last year. Built it in one day, and the day after I competed with it and took a 4th place bone stock. The TRX4 is probably a ok truck, but don't like the electronics, the portals, the 2 speed, the remote diffs, and the heavy body. I'll think I just pass. As Kett said it's not for scale guys. It's for the casual Traxxas customers.

Patrick Kirwan I guess that’s part of my point, having unlocking diffs doesn’t interest me, as I get plenty of steering out of my trucks without that feature. Comparing the TRX to the first gen SCX isn’t really a fair comparison, as that kit came out over seven years ago. Try an scx10.2!

Have played with the SCX10-2 as well. But I think you are insane to not think that an insane tighter of a steering radius isn't beneficial. I think if Axial had done it, you'd be on board. Totally decent review for a non-Traxxas biased pov. My 2c so far... I haven't used the cruise feature yet, but I've gotten a lot of use out of both the 2-speed gearbox and the remote locking diffs on the trails around here. The 2-speed is very nice on the flat or downhill areas between the rocky sections. The diffs I use mostly as a challenge aspect to see how much I can do without them, but they also make a difference for turns on the tight sections of the trails, like switchbacks.The sticker windows are indeed @ss. Tires are better than I expected. Waterproof, and dust-proof"ish" with the sealed wheel wells is pretty nice too. Just putting some Tamiya clear paint on the light lenses made a big improvement in appearance too.

I am not really generally into Traxxas vehicles, but every now and then they put out something somewhat interesting. I only currently own two at the moment and have had a total of 6 in the last 25 years. I have found their micro servos to be fairly reliable, more so then anything they could try to pass off as a steering servo. The two Traxxas vehicles I currently own are what was a dead first gen Revo I have mostly converted into a Summit and a new TRX4. The Revo thing is using it's original micro reverse servo as a two speed servo now. I am more worried the iffy speed control and steering servo in the TRX4 will go out then the shift servos, they should see little stress in the shifting duties. There are always faulty ones though, and you do have to make sure to hold onto the servo horn when you unscrew the servo arm screw. I am watching baited breath to see where the failure points are going to be on this new truck. So far I have seen reported; steering servo, motor and esc, that damn evil bolt they mounted the spare on stripping out in the rear rack, and a few others. Compared to the Mini LST I got when they first came out many years ago, these are dang near perfect so far :/ -flash backs of swapping diff and servo gears like some people swap battery packs-

I like these options. Two speed transfer case and locking diffs? I wish my Axial SCX10 had them. As much as I'd like to buy RCs, I've only had two, and I'm starting to realize I really only have space for one. A two speed transfer case would mean my crawler could pick up the pace if I want it. Locking diffs mean I wouldn't scrub the tires just playing around on the road. But, shouldn't I just get a regular 4x4 RC? Sure I could, but then I'd lose out on that scale looks, solid axles, and crawling performance. This truck does it all.

Good question, and thanks for asking! In a nutshell, in the original form, I found the TRX-4 to be overly complicated and gimmicky. I still feel pretty strongly about that. At the time, I wished they'd release a simplified, pared down version that was cheaper, and did away with all the servos and 2 speed. I now have a TRX-4 Sport that I need to take out of the box and put through it's paces. I'm willing to bet that I'll prefer it over the original. Cheers!

Really great review!!! You actually touched on all the reasons I didn't buy one last month. I'm new to scale, but not new to RC's by any means and I went with the SCX10.2. After looking at tons of reviews and 1st impressions I just saw it as being way too many things to break for me. I'm sure people love them and they seem really capable. The pros just didn't out weigh the cons for me and I felt the same way you did about it. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks for your feedback! I think a lot of people like gadgets and doo-dads. I'm too old for all of that maybe, and I just want simple! The SCX10II is a great truck and you won't be disappointed. The Traxxas truck definitely has it's merits, and certainly enjoyable on the trails, but no more so than any other truck I own. As for break-downs, none yet, except for the woefully underpowered RTR servo - but that's almost an expected failure point. ;) Thanks for watching!
@bradleyland
@bradleyland 6 жыл бұрын
I totally get the inclination toward simplicity - any complication is a trade-off - but man, I really cannot wrap my head around how you can have such a negative view of locking differentials. Unlocking the rear diff can *dramatically* improve the turning radius. Getting between gates, that's going to make a clear and decisive difference. Even when just looking at it from a fun perspective, it's fun to challenge your truck on open diffs, and then lock them up only when you need to. This is coming from someone who hasn't owned a Traxxas product since I sold my T-Maxx and got an Associated Monster GT. Haven't looked back.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 6 жыл бұрын
Turning radius is helpful for sure, but there's other tricks for reducing radius. I will say though, that I took this truck out last week and specifically tried this challenge and I can see the fun in it. So yes, definitely fun. Still a failure point though, so we'll see how it holds up! Thanks for your comment!

Too many people don't use diff locks on the summit properly. It is for low speed. High speed and huge tires with locked diffs is a no-no. They probably should make them first gear operational only on the summit due to speed and tire size, and too many people not seeing where that is not a good idea. I have had 3 summits, and never broke a diff.

So I recently got back into RC after being away for about 10 years. The crawlers and scale trucks got my attention and then a buddy at work gave me an old Losi mini crawler rolling chassis. I got that thing going in short order and a few weeks later got one of these beasties. Yep, sucked right back in but from a new perspective, that of crawling and trail. I'm new to all of that and so far I like it! I have some of your same feelings. For me, I like the 2-speed. I didn't think I would but it gives the truck a fun second personality. The diffs, hmmm... I'm not liking the independent diff controls. I popped in a Spektrum srs6000 and set up a mix for all diffs on or all off. I just don't see the advantage to separate locking control but then I am essentially a noob to trail crawling. I do like being able to lock/unlock. I don't have a lot of money to spend on having many trucks so I kind of like the ability to turn off the crawling stuff and bash around a bit. I do agree though that the added complexity might be the trucks undoing. Maybe after I learn more and break all of that stuff I'll disable the lot of it and make a "basic" model for just trail crawling, kind of like you suggested. Fun for now as is though. The portals? Awesome! 'Nuff said. Now for the ranty bit. This thing kind of sucks for modding, at least for me. Like I said, I'm no fan of the separate locking diffs. Mainly because it wastes a radio channel. I really NEED to eliminate that second servo and get ch5 back for something else. I'm obsessed about it. All on or all off is good enough for me. C'mon Traxxas, you coulda done it with one servo! But what annoys me is how damn hard they made it to convert to that! I tried this past weekend and gave up for now. I do see a path, however.The diff lock cables look long enough to relocate one servo to the left side while still flexing/clearing properly and then I think I'll fashion a cable mount from a servo mount block or something. But they could have just as easily not butted the diff servos right up to the battery tray, thereby eliminating room for a different horn, grrrr... Oh, and how they run their wiring. I get it. It's nice and clean but must they bury it so deeeeeep in the bowls of the truck? Are they afraid of a few zip ties? In short, it is mod-able but it seems kind of hostile towards it. Not the most open of platforms. I went with the Bronco version. I wanted something less top heavy (more noob friendly) and, well, I have a soft spot in my heart for those old trucks as I grew up with them and worked on many as a mechanic. And Traxxas made a dead sexy rendition of it! And I've already scuffed mine all up. So overall, I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Lots of fun out of the box, it has good bones but it's harder to modify and they look quite good for scale. I'm having a fun first go at this for sure. Now that I have learned a few things maybe I'll go for that Axial SCX 10II I was originally contemplating and eventually do a rear dig unit. That would be a fun rig and maybe I could do something different on this TRX 4. And that is how the addiction starts. What is the proper number of RCs to own? N+1 of course! ;-) Thanks for the awesome videos and keep up the good work! -Chuck

The locking and unlocking differentials benefit scale crawling and people use them in full size rigs when going on a side hill and trying to turn up the hill with lockers on will throw you down the hill but if you unlock your diffs it will let you make your way up the side hill because your wheels can move at different speeds

I initially was put off by all the mechanisms, and to be honest, still am. I prefer a simpler truck, and while something like the Phoenix has just as many servos, it uses them in a much more robust way, and in a chassis that has a nice low center of gravity and is more focused on crawling. The TRX-4 Sport is far and away my most preferred variant of the TRX-4, but after all these years, I'd like to see a refresh to the line, with some more interesting motor and drivetrain layouts. As for my style over the years, I cringe going back to these earlier days!

Great update and you hit some great points on this rig. Looks challenging to just upgrade or fix the axles or transmission looks like you have to take out a lot of components to do certain work. Plus love the shirt you were wearing in this video I'm an axial guy but have an open mind. I do like the cosmetics on this rig and very scale like which is something I enjoy. my 2c. I love the truck so far. my scx10 which has always been my go to truck sits. yes the body is heavy but that's a simple change. tires do lack but for most of us we have a few sets. I pick one up just to try something different. I have been to axial route since the company started, and I still love their trucks but its the same old locked axle truck. the 2 speed is a nice feature for me, I like to have that wheel speed for mud or that extra push, but I want that low speed for obstacles and such. the locking diffs were the big selling point for me at least. for years I have trailed in the 1:1 world and never ran my axles locked until I need them. now with this truck I find myself running open diffs 90% of the time, I try every obstacle with open diffs and the lock the front or both only when I really need to. out on the trail its not a race I like to enjoy my time out there. it honestly gets some what boring when your truck can make it over or though most anything with out a challenge or at easy. would I ever get rid of my axials no. they are still fun to drive but the trx4 adds a different scale of realism to this hobby at least for me. its not just another solid axle truck with locked axles. yes the electronic could be an issue. I waited for awhile read review after review talked to owner of the trx4 so get their feed back an issues with the truck. now I like a lot of people in this hobby have been doing it for years. so motors and esc's I have a bunch of. that's one of the biggest failures is the motors they wear out or over heat. the servos are well traxxas servos they are what they are. I have few different brands I like to run and when the steering servo kicks it, a better one will replace it. I picked up a few metal gear micro servos when I bought the truck to replace the stock ones when they do fail. I love working on my truck almost as much as I doing running them or replacing a few parts here and there for me I a joy. and now the aftermarket for this truck is exploding. just my 2c though
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the very good observations! I generally find challenges in everything, as for adding realism, I can do that without having to flip a bunch of switches. ;) Bottom line, there's room for all these trucks, as whatever gets people outside having fun, is good enough for me! Cheers!

Dear SBG, love all your videos, hate this one. Respectfully, your fanboyism has led you to a limited perspective. There's no limited perspective. I've had countless vehicles pass through this workshop. Just because I don't like the overcomplicated differential feature (that you obviously do like) doesn't make me a fanboy. The rest of the TRX range I do very much like, but that one feature alone causes me to recommend the simpler, and cheaper, TRX-4 Sport kit. I really like that one. This variant, which I gave a very fair shake over a long period of time, let me down. Opting to NOT make a video because I don't like something is an even bigger waste of time, and I'll always strive to be honest and provide my insights, whether the viewers agree or disagree. That's the beauty of the internet. Thanks for your comment!

Obviously this video is 2 years old...but ill throw my 2 cents in anyhow. I can certainly appreciate your perspective on the gimmicky stuff, especially in a competition setting. Your really wont have an advantage with selectible locking diffs or a high gear. But for someone like me who enjoys the rc hobby in a much more casual setting the gimmicky stuff can be a lot of fun. My friend bought one and when he let me run it i found myself using it with the diffs open most of the time. It added a fun challenge running through my creek bed. This is a late comment, for I have just gotten back into RC. This channel come the most recommended for information and tech on the industry today. I would like to start by saying was a great video, you are well spoken as well as there's great production value. To your point of gimmicks with the diff and two speed transmission. I have always loved the (Scale) side of this market mainly for the realism. I got away from the RC industry not long after Axail had shown up in the market. My complaint and reason was the lack of features you see in a real truck vs the RC. I don't know how many times while out with friends and the kids I either had to much gear to rock crawl or not enough to do some mudding. Something that I do with my actual truck all the time and I see as the two things that style of truck should do. Also on that point be rock crawling and not have the turn radius for tight maneuvering. So two weeks ago when a friends son was ready for his first real proper RC truck I was ecstatic to see this truck with a high and low gear box and locking differentials not just the front but both front and rear. I could finally for a reasonable price have a mini version of my actual truck. Not to mention it is a great way to educate the kids on the mechanics of off roading and mechanical engineering. Yes it is more things to go wrong but honestly imo nothing crazy and thankfully it is Traxxas so not expensive or difficult to repair. So I was a bit disappointed to hear you speak kinda ill of features that honestly I feel are great for the actions you expect the truck to do. Even more for the realism and learning opportunities that the futures offer essentially for someone who is a fan of cruise control. Something I will never use but still see the benefit in having especially for your case of shooting video and driving. Again I enjoyed your review and look forward to watching more of them. Just wanted to give some feed back from a different perspective that what Traxxas did I feel deserved a bit more credit.

Don't be disappointed because my opinion differs from yours! It comes down entirely to my preference for driving style. Yes, it's a great educational feature and certainly, if that's what you want to do, go for it. We're all entitled to an opinion. Clearly Traxxas is listening to the market by offering multiple versions that have all of these added parts, and ones that are simplified. That's the great thing about this hobby, different things for people who like things different!

Great review, I have the TRX4 and enjoy it so far, just my opinion but the two speed and locking diffs are fine, most off road trucks have more than one speed and are not always fully locked unless you have a specialty vehicle. I say that because I own a 4wd off road vehicle, it's an automatic and awd buy still 4 low and Hi I the operator have to change. So the TRX4 brought that part of the realism to the scale world....Again this is just my opinion not anyone else's.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
I can totally appreciate scaling down features from a full-size truck - but when it's purpose built, it's not completely necessary. I've never felt the need before now to be able to unlock the diffs, go super fast to the point of traction roll, or launch it off jumps. It's definitely geared towards the Traxxas exosystem, hence all the features.

Scale Builder's Guild thanks for the reply, you make a good point but.....we need not to be so apprehensive about change, I think that the TRX4 will eventually find it's place whether it's modified to compete, bashed around or become someone's shelf queen. I guess we just have to wait and see. 🤘✌😉

Lock and unlock a diff. is very beneficial in the real world, that's for sure. I assume it can do the same for your kind of application if the underground is slippery, i.e, or partly slippery. No offence, are the 4WD principles known for centre diff., front and rear diff. application? As I said no offence, just asking! Because in depth i learned about this since I live in Australia. I don' t know enough about RC, but thinking about to get one for, even do 4WD at the campfire or around, that's why I watched the Vid.. But i can imagine that the same principles apply to the RC area and what caught my attention on that model. But maybe I am wrong. Short question at the end: Good mid price range, capable, track RC?? Nice Vids I saw 2 and subscribe. Cheers mate! Oh and before I forget, I have a throttle control lever in my 4 WD as well and I am not driving one of these overtuned, big shit has it all rigs, brute force things, not my style! The lever comes in handy.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes, absolutely the same principles apply in the RC world, but not really the same applications - as with RC, you're very rarely in a situation that would benefit from unlocked front and rear diffs unless you're going fast and turning a lot. My style of driving and interest isn't in going fast. On the trails, it's generally locked full time. Most RC's before this (a few excluded) have full-time locked diffs and nobody seemed to want it any other way. As for your question, I don't know much about track/on-road RC. Thanks for watching!

I would like to counter a couple of points. 1) If anyone can make a multi servo set up work, it's Traxxas. Look at the Summit. It also has locking front and rear differentials as well as high/low transmission. I've worked in the RC industry for several years and despite seeing the ridiculous things people do to this truck, like adding a brushless system, I have yet to see servo issues. 2) You contradicted yourself when you stated you liked the inner wheel wells, but didn't like the window decals. On a truck that doesn't have any kind of interior you'd be looking into that ugly space not just through it in the wheel wells. 3) Keeping mind the popularity of Land Rover vehicles world wide I thought the choice of body is outstanding. Traxxas isn't the first to do this body though. RC4WD has offered a D110 a couple of times at several hundred dollars more than the TRX4 and those are kits. Ford F series body would also have been recognizable worldwide as well, but every aftermarket body manufacture makes a Ford body so you're able to change it when ever you want. I will agree on one thing, the price. Even I think the street price of $449 is high. My local hobby shop is selling them for $399, same as Vaterra and others. At that price I now own my first new Traxxas.
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your counterpoints, here's my replies! 1) The Summit had all kinds of problems with their diff lockers from what I recall. I will say that so far none of the micro servos have given up the ghost, and I've been driving it with much recklessness. The steering servo died on Day Two. 2) Liking inner fenders and hating window decals is not a contradiction. I wouldn't have complained if the windows were clear and there weren't any fenders - the fenders are a bonus! 3) I well aware of the popularity and other Land Rover bodies offered - it's an awesome body, but not what I thought Traxxas would have offered - but good for them for doing so! Thanks for watching!
@Xoarkitty
@Xoarkitty 7 жыл бұрын
True I guess not a contradiction. I do have one complaint myself about the truck, and I hope Traxxas reads these. I have to know in a world a scale trucks where the end user will spend countless amounts of money accessorizing their vehicle to make it look true to scale, why Traxxas do you insist on using your signature ugly gray plastic for the diff covers? Thanks for being civil. Thumbs up and sub! P.S. Yes the servo is useless for the hardcore guy, but it's also rtr so it's always going to be a compromise.

why is 450 high for it when its 410 for an scx10.2 400 for the hpi venture 400 for the vaterra rigs 500 for up for the rc4wd rtr rigs. you get way more in this rig and from all the videos and reviews after hours of use show this to be vary durable

Several people have said it was a biased review, but I would disagree. You're not a huge fan of it. So what? Isn't that the point of a review? To give your opinion of something? Not everyone is going to love the TRX-4, some might hate it. You made some great points and I really enjoyed your review. I love my TRX-4, I think it's great for scale realism, and it's tons of fun. However, if I get into competition I wouldn't even consider using it. Just too many unnecessary features that may beak and leave you SOL. Plus, no Axial Fest. How does the trx4 compare to the newest scx10?
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 4 жыл бұрын
They're pretty close in terms of features and performance. If I were choosing between these two variants, I'd probably choose the SCX10III for it's dig unit, over the locking/unlocking diffs of the TRX4. If I wanted a simpler TRX4, I'd choose the Sport Kit.

Very good review, but I can constantly see the Pro-Axial undertones. Makes it feel biased a bit. I love my axial SCX10 to death, and it is beyond custom, and am buying a TRX4 Tuesday. If the TRX4 was servo on axle, and had a 2/4wd option added, on paper it would be perfect to me. Have yet to drive one though.

Every truck has it's positives and negatives. If the video feels Axial slanted, it's because that's the benchmark as far as I'm concerned. Once you've driven yours, I'd love to hear your feedback! Cheers!

I think of it as a rebirth of the 1/10 summit but with soild axles. diff locking option is nice. can be a pain at times but it has been a useful thing for me. as sometimes i just want the front diff locked and rear unlocked to make it up something my other truck would have just flipped itself over becases of the locked rear. window sticker not sure what they where thinking. noting wrong with the other trucks i still like my Vattera K10, Wraiths, RC4WD linked rigs like D90. my thoughts on it. would like to add one, one day to my rc stable. all platforms have there PRO'S and CON'S this truck is no expection to that rule. but for there first soild axle platform its not bad. from what ive seen. my thoughts will probably change once i have one of my own. good thing Wheelbase is adjustable.

I just subscribe because I'm thinking you can show me what's the fun of crawling I don't get it. I'm a novice rc guy with a 4yr old and wondering "what's all the hype about".I have a SC truck (slash) and that's fun in a subdivision area & trails but how does one use crawling in a city or subdivision.?
@scalebuildersguild
@scalebuildersguild 7 жыл бұрын
To each their own I guess. I like the challenge of going slow and conquering terrain . Being in a big city myself, I do find myself going to parks (that allow RC) and enjoying the odd trail. I generally have to travel to really enjoy, but I'm lucky that I have friends close that like to do the same thing.

I have already seen quite a bit of customization coming forth. As far as the Shift/Locker servo's go, I would assume (currently looking around myself) that you could likely get a full metal gear servo replacement for them and have a lot less issue's with them stripping gears and what not, especially seeing as how your likely not going to be constantly shifting either of them all the time. I suspect, or at least hope some of the aftermarket picks up on it and makes nice mods for it. Already hearing some rumbling around about people that may attempt to get toyzuki and or axial trans to fit in it. Honestly, who know's what mods people will do quite yet, could get very interesting and make it like a whole new truck when people have the time and money to throw at it and test this and that.

Fair enough, modifications from the community are always going to bring new options to light. Curious to see how these axles could work on a different chassis, or adding a totally different transmission. Thanks for watching!

You look so lost in this video. I think you are stunned by how great a truck this really is. Traxxas has created the a better trail truck on the first try. That’s what millions in R&D will get you. This is what everyone is looking for. Enjoy the truck. Do a “I was wrong about this..” follow up video in 6 months.

It's been over a year, and my thoughts are exactly the same. I still don't need the locking/unlocking diffs, or the two speed, or the portals for that matter. The TRX Sport is certainly on my wish list though, while the original languishes on the shelf.

Thank you for the greañt content. I'm a fan of the budget build offs. I think you missed one of the benefits of being able to unlock the rear diff. When climbing unlocking the rear diff can help much the same way free wheeling the rear axle does with a dig transmission. At my local crawling spot there is a line that I am only able to accomplish without flipping over backwards if I unlock the rear diff for about 6 inches of the climb. Thanks again. I enjoy your channel.

Hey Matt, I can't believe I sat thru that whole 17 minutes and enjoyed it. You share exactly every thought I had with this truck. My pre-order was cancelled at tower between the traxxas frenzy and hobbico. I never found myself wanting it anymore. And my 10.2 is so capable and durable in the trail last thing I wanted to walk 2 hr back to the my car when I am just about to hit the next summit in the hike. Lol

I own a trx4 and I understand your point of view extremely clearly, I bought mine in curiosity to its driveline components and i just dont drive roughly and personnally dont mind doing maintenance, I share your opinion on that there are more failures possible and yes it is a heavy truck😂. I like hearing other's perspectives of things, thanks Matt for sharing!!✌🚙

Kinda reminded me of the interview with Mr. Incredible, in the "Incredibles" animated movie...Hilarious! One of the attributes that kept me from ever buying a TRX Summit was the complicated "Summit Tech", with all the servos for 2-speed, remote lock/unlock, etc., and it's also why I won't consider a TRX-4. I would never use it in my trailing applications, which is mostly on mountain trails, hiking at 1-3 mph avg. Trying to go into 2nd gear would likely end up with the TRX-4 plummeting down a mountain slope. I do have some Traxxas RC's, and they're fun for their intended purposes, but I'll leave my scale/trail/crawling to those simpler platforms better suited.

Good video,well balanced and not coming across as a hater or fan boy, Ive seen a lot videos with the "This is junk,the servo has fried!" , lets face it servos and tyres (or tires lol) are the first thing we replace on a RTR! I like the portals, the 2 speed transmission and the lockable diffs, I just like that kind of "engineering", BUT in a crawler its too complex for me, I have a SCX10 II kit, its my first crawler ( not my first RC,that was a Tamiya Frog back in the 80s ) and I love the simplicity of it and it performs great. I do think the TRX-4 might appeal more to those that dont have/want a "full on" crawler with the appeal of more speed and better steering with the diffs unlocked, yeah the SCX10 II does turn like a London double decker bus on a grippy surface because of the locked diffs lol but thats ok its not designed for that.....

Harleys shock fetish rub off on you? lol I agree with you on the 2 speed and diffs. If someone comes out with a way to lock it into low gear I will do that for sure. As for the diffs I'm not sure yet I do like messing with them but as you said no real reason for them. The reason I bought the TRX4 is mainly to see how traxxas did and because it has portals. I do think I found my new go to shock though if they release more spring rates.

Ha! Yes, shock fetishes for days! Same here in regards to why I made the purchase. I really wanted to see how it was going to work, and if it was too much complication, or just enough. I'll take it to Headquake's and get his opinion on it too. Thanks for watching!

You like the cruise control but not the two speed trans? Hmm. I think the cruise is way more gimicky than the other features. I do agree with you about the stickers for windows though. I think its a good first entry into crawlers, but not so much geared towards the hard core crawler guys. Just my take. Great vid as usual. Take it easy.

Yes, two speed is too many for me. Why would I want to rip around with a top-heavy truck like this? If I want to go fast, I'll use something that can handle that. Cruise control is handy because I shoot so many videos - bottom line. Thanks for watching, much appreciated!

Scale Builder's Guild yea, I think the high gear would be cool to have but I wouldn't use it very often. And I think I'd run a different body anyway, I'm just not that into that one. I like a lot of the things it's got though, like the axles, but I understand some people not liking it.

Who on earth hates portal axles? Too much clearance for you? Comes factory with CVD style shafts as well... I think this is one of it's best features. I get over so much stuff with ease that my SCX10 axles hit on... I've had a Wraith, you'd be making the wrong choice IMO.
