According to the latest announcement from the CCRCGP, Fubao is currently going through a pseudo-pregnancy period. Pseudo-pregnancy is a relatively normal and common phenomenon in giant pandas and other mammals. It is particularly frequent among female giant pandas in captivity. This phenomenon is mainly caused by hormonal fluctuations in the body, leading to symptoms and behaviors that mimic pregnancy. Although pseudo-pregnancy is not an actual pregnancy, it is a normal physiological response during the panda's reproductive cycle.
Let's all cheer for Fubao and hope she gets through this challenging period soon!
During a pseudo-pregnancy, female giant pandas exhibit symptoms and behaviors that are very similar to those of an actual pregnancy. These include:
Decreased Appetite: During pseudo-pregnancy, a panda's appetite usually decreases, especially their interest in bamboo.
Reduced Activity Levels: The panda's activity level significantly decreases, and they tend to rest and sleep more.
Increased Resting Time: Pseudo-pregnant pandas spend more time resting and reduce their time spent on outdoor activities.
Behavioral Changes: The panda may become quieter and more composed, showing less playfulness and interaction.
Weight and Abdominal Changes: Although not truly pregnant, some pandas may show slight weight gain or a mildly swollen abdomen during pseudo-pregnancy.
Nesting Behavior: Pseudo-pregnant pandas may exhibit nesting behaviors, preparing a "birthing den" as they would if they were truly pregnant.
Changes in Secretions: Pandas may experience increased secretions, which is related to hormonal changes.
