8:45 HZD does in facts mention the forbidden west quite a lot actually. There’s side quest and data logs that talk about the forbidden west. I played the game 4 times and I was shocked to see how many times it was referenced. They REALLY planned this out far in advance

I dont like it when lore is in supplementary books or comics, but it says in the gameplay book the reason Hades flew to Sylens is because Sylens set up a remote download program in his spear. Which is why he gave it to Aloy

Could be some remnant of an AI from, or survivors of, The Odyssey, the ship that was trying to save humanity by leaving the planet but exploded when the engines came online. So still space-originating, but not aliens.

​@@_Hofnarr Definitely was my theory right from when I finished the game. Odyssey wasn't actually destroyed, just got lost in space. A thousand years later they return to what they see as their inheritance (with advanced tech, thanks to Apollo), but find it 'infested' with 'primitive' humans. They reactivated Hades to 'cleanse', the planet for themselves. Horrible people basically. I will admit I hadn't thought of the possibility of it being an AI, which may be more fitting with Horizon's themes. Though the Odyssey humans being corrupted by the knowledge they had from Apollo *might* be an interesting idea, and if it were the case it would make Faro's decision to purge Apollo have some justification.

I just got the last two achievements in HZD, so I hope Forbidden West lives up to the hype. Since I play on PC with an incredible backlog of games to catch up on, I can wait for a while to play the next episode. A little while back Sony bought Nixxes Software, so maybe that will help with speeding up some PC port releases. 8:11 Those "destroyers" are called "corruptors", by the way.

Seems like Sony's PC strategy is releasing games when they think the game has gotten them the majority of the revenue on PlayStation. So the more successful a game is, the later it might be released on PC. Seeing this trend from Days Gone (2019), Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) and God of War (2018).

I'd be interested to see how the rest of the world plays into the Horizon Universe. It seemed like in Zero Dawn that both the lore in the Old and New Worlds were centralized in America. Granted, Elizabet and Faro were American, but what happened with the rest of the world? I also think the machines you call Destroyers are called Deathbringers, unless they're different in the UK and US. I also think the signal, and possibly those comets, may be from The Odyssey Life Ship, which was destroyed when humanity tried to send a ship to wait out the Faro Plague. I'm wondering if maybe there was sabotage there, maybe even Ted Faro, who we know didn't have the best moral standing towards the end.

Do you think that maybe remains of the Odyssey will come into play because it had an Alpha version of APOLLO on it? I replayed HZD recently and they mention it more then once, and how Elisabet Sobeck is concerned that that version of Apollo isn't done and doesn't have the proper restrictions placed upon it.

@@likealightning4139 Possibly, yes. Maybe that Apollo went Skynet on it's own and sent a signal towards Earth before destroying the Odyssey. Maybe the Odyssey wasn't destroyed at all, but Apollo faked it. My original thought was someone, either planetside or on the ship itself, was a radical or became radicalized enough to destroy the Odyssey. My first thought here is Ted Faro, who we know killed the full-version of Apollo and the heads of each AI. I think it's possible he sent a signal to the Odyssey to destroy it, and maybe the signal was "trapped" in a black box that eventually found a way to send the data, and the signal, back to Earth.

It's mentioned in data points at least, that the rest of the world was also wrecked and that breeding facilities were constructed in other parts of the world. Odyssey: One of my theories is, the ship made it and the messages of it's demise were exagerated, the decendants returned and decided they want earth but not deal with those primitives. Ted: Another theory is, Ted's clone somehow absolutely lost it and decided, this is bs, let's wipe everything. Apollo: The subordinate functions lack this kind of decision making, remember, combat machines only started appearing AFTER the signal and Hephaestus was freed. If you want to look for a possible AI culprint, read up on Vast Silver, although I can't imagine why the AI that was developed to save earth from humanity's stupidity before the claw back would now want to kill nature all over again.

Hephaestus does show up in the Frozen Wilds DLC but that program is in charge of all machine manufacturing, causing the derangement in the machines cuz it's angry humans are destroying the used-to-be peaceful terraformers and purifiers

Finally a channel where the person covering Horizon can actually pronounce her name correctly. Erend doesn't have muttonchops though as he lacks sideburns. Horizon & the Frozen Wilds dlc were great, getting the plat was fun, looking forward to the sequel.

It's quite a bittersweet part of the story that hunting machines is literally integral to playing the game and advancing your character and yet it's pretty much exactly like deforestation. We are cutting down the machines that are making the planet habitable at all.

Great video, Zoe! I'm so excited for this game! Horizon's got such a different story and setting from most other games, I'm very curious to see where it goes. I think the only thing I'd add to this video is a bit more about Ted Faro, and how he deleted (maybe) APOLLO. I'd be very surprised if that didn't play a role in what Aloy is looking for out West. And in the bigger picture sense, I'd also be shocked if he didn't have something to do with the signal that set the GAIA subfunctions loose. Seeing as the last we know of him, he was all alone in his private bunker becoming increasingly irrational, I could definitely see him going full on misanthrope and deciding humanity just shouldn't be resurrected at all. Or else getting a god complex and deciding he should be the one to remake the world, and he's actually uploaded his brain into an AI or cryogenically frozen himself or something. I doubt that loathsome weasel would just accept death. As for the comets, they look to me a lot like HADES did when he escaped the metal devil corpse and went to Sylens. It could be that they're an indication that there are three primary AI at play in this story. DEMETER and AETHER seem like sound guesses based on the storms and red plants, but is the third one HADES, or another new AI? With the focus on underwater exploration, how much of the Forbidden West is flooded, and the apparent focus on all aspects of the natural world going wild (Land with the plant growth, air with the storms, seems like all that's missing is the sea), I think it's a definite possibility that POSEIDON is in play as well.

I personally have to wonder if maybe there was more than one AI group. A war between AIs with humans as collateral damage is a workable story and all, and would explain parts of the limited focus... IE Sobeck's group of designers... worked in NA, and others worked elsewhere. Also.... Sobeck... named for an Egyptian deity. Why?

In HZD we did see corrupted areas where machines went haywire... If the Blight is an evolution of this corruption that mutated like a virus to living organisms now... Damn that would be an awesome lore factor

I enjoyed HZD but wasn't dying for Forbidden West. However the footage we're getting of gameplay (and having watched Johnny do his first playthrough recently) had got me a little hyped. I've avoided open world RPG types for a while and this will scratch the itch of mopping up sidequests and map markers. We also know how good the gameplay felt in HZD and this looks much the same level of "slo mo slide through an enemies legs while shooting arrows at them" type of fun.

Good video, Zoe. I hope the red signal and comets don't portend the arrival aliens, but instead, The Odyssey, and it's inhabitants... AI and/or humans... Returning after a thousand years along with a (improved) Beta version of Apollo? This would fit Horizon's core themes and provide interesting scenarios & continuity for a sequel. As a slightly disturbing side note, the fictional premise of Horizon is becoming reality: AI are now in limited charge of harvesting, water purification, etc. in some developing countries as our over-reliance and faith in AI is nearing a dangerous event horizon -- pun intended -- Where we have to be careful about how much control we give thinking machines.

Regarding Demeter maybe she spawned a child AI called Persephone and Hades has kidnapped it and Demeter is lashing out in anger to get her child back? Still confuses me that Minerva is one of the AIs codenames. All the other AIs are named after Greek Gods except Minerva who is the Roman Goddess of Wisdom replacing Athena. What was wrong with calling it Athena I wonder or is there some reason why a Roman Goddess code name is chosen amongst all those Greek deities?

It's almost certainly a trademark thing. Athena appears to be a very common name in AI circles.

Finally finished ZD after a 2.5 year break (PS5 patch was nice), so now I was also able to watch this video without worrying about spoilers. While I enjoyed exploring the world and the ranged combat was fun, some of the open world stuff was pretty basic. For me ZD was a 8/10 kind of an experience, so not sure what to make of Forbidden West yet. I didn't really enjoy the gameplay reveal - I hated the melee combat in ZD, so not looking forward to more of it, and underwater sections are never fun in games. The back story was interesting in ZD (although they could've had fewer bunkers and audiotapes), but most of the sidequests and side characters weren't exactly top drawer stuff with one-dimensional cartoonish villains and pretty dreadful dialogue. Side quests were mainly "now you must kill an even bigger machine!" So I'm hoping the sequel will have better writing and a world that feels more alive - pretty much all the settlements in ZD felt like bad movie sets with characters repeating same inane things.

I would encourage you to try the Frozen Wilds DLC if you haven't already, I feel like they really upped their quality in that part of the game. As for the melee combat, I think the gameplay reveal kinda hinted at improvements in that regard. Maybe it'll be more enjoyable now?

a) The Farro machines didn't have an AI to speak of, they just followed their programming to advance in a combat zone and keep refueling. b) Gaia's subfunctions are comparibly low capability AI's. c) My two theoeries regarding the origin of the signal revolve araound the Odyssey or a Ted clone. d) We also saw Demeter's work in form of the metal flowers in a triangle of flowers and another triangle around Elizabeth's remains. e) Not Destroyers, either Deathbringers or Kopeks f) Blight new yes, meteors, everyday occurence. g) As far as we know, only the Nora had a problem with delving into the ruins. The Oseram do it often, the Carja occasionally and as FW showed, the Banuk do too. DID you even play the game or just oogeling Aloy? I'd say the latter.

Anyone else feel like Zero Dawn had an amazing backstory, in a fairly average game? Uncovering the Faros plague storyline and Ted's role in the destruction of the World was great But the towns and city's didn't really feel alive, and most side characters and quests were pretty bland.
