Jillian I know this is 6 months old but I just found you through Kristy Rice and have been watching a bunch of your videos. I want to apologize because this turned out so long. I understand if you never reply. This video brought me to tears in the sweetest way, you talked about how we are worth the cost of the supplies to really get a feel for the medium and to not be held back thinking we aren’t getting it when it’s really our supplies. That one just floored me. For 2.5 years I have exclusively been painting with watercolor. My first paints had mold in the tubes, my next set and the color mixing course that I paid for really only taught me how to mix a good neutral brown and black. The rest of the course was all about how this curated set of paints are the perfect rainbow and you can mix them all together just play… it took me a year and a half to get a cotman set I still use. My brushes fell apart before I replaced a few and the only reason I dared to try cotton paper is because I found Boahung on temu and I ate ramen for weeks to afford that. I am in a huge financial constraint and I have always fought that’s what held me back from trying other things. But it wasn’t until you said that we are worth it to get the good stuff that I stopped feeling guilty about the couple of good things I do have and they aren’t even close to the best things I could have. Anyway I just really wanted to say thank you because now I’m going to make a wish list. One that will have a money jar to put the extras into and I will be getting myself upgrades as soon as I can afford it because I AM WORTH IT. THANK YOU. -Livia

“Content Overwhelm” this describes how I feel about all the directions we can choose when using KZbin tutorials..too many choices, no focus.
@samawhidden
@samawhidden Жыл бұрын
Content overwhelm is something that keeps me from creating often. I follow so many wonderful creators on KZbin and Instagram and will start my day looking at their content and by the time I make it into my studio I feel like “why bother creating someone else has already done it” or “there’s no way I’ll be as good as them “ it’s something I’ve been trying to overcome, to tell myself no one has done what I will do because I’m me. We can all paint a fish and every single painting will be unique ❤ Also may I ask how you made those tea cups? I want to do that too! 😂 ❤
@brushmovement

I hear youbecause whatever you are telling yourself - I have said the same thing to myself before too. Originality is about YOU and not about others - its a real reframe and that mindset takes time. Also those tea cups are a commissioned project with crabtree and evelyn!

Many thanks for your openness Jillian. I resonated on some level with ALL of your points. The creative person is on a JOURNEY. Your art is your journey. Your art is the product of your personal artistic growth on your journey. It took me awhile to realise too. We are not robots making a product. 🤖 We would never be satisfied being a cookie cutter 😜 (darn it, it would make life easier in some ways!) I've not produced the same quantity of art in the same time frame as you, nor attempted to sell or sold any piece's. I've sold greeting cards to friend's who love them. (they wanted to give me money).... Yea I'm not gonna compare journey's here. I'm just happy to be on the art journey 😊 (as painful as it can be sometimes). You Tube has really helped crack open that dormant seed within!! 🌻 I love your style and you're a clever girl. It's a helpful combo being a psychologist and artist! 👍🏻👏

Your lettering is gorgeous, and looks like art all by itself. No one would mistake my letters for fine art. 😆 Yes, your following for particular videos may drop when you do ones on calligraphy if your base audience is flower painters, but you won't lose your flower painter audience, they will just wait for another flower video - and you may encourage some of them to do calligraphy. I've never dropped a KZbinr because all their content isn't what I want, I just find the videos I like. Calligraphy people will find you, too. You can do both. 😊 As you flipped through your sketchbooks, it looks like you definitely made a big jump in your art in 2019 to where it became looser, or maybe that was 2017? The sketchbooks weren't displayed by year, so I am not sure. However, I am certain that it is all beautiful. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. 🥰

The part that was really inspiring for me was when you talked about taking a 4 year break to focus on your family, only to come back to painting with more confidence and knowledge of where you wanted to take your art journey. I started learning watercolor in 2016, but stopped in 2019 when I had 2 toddlers and family life became very exhausting. I've just started picking up my brush again but have been lost in thoughts of "Where would I be now in my art journey if I hadn't stopped painting?" And it has really been stealing my joy! Seeing your similar journey is very inspiring so thank you for this! ❤

First off - YAY for picking up your brush again! I know family life can be exhausting. I still have 1 toddler in tow.. haha I know she will eventually grow and I like the flexibility of being here with her right now. All of my videos are literally filmed during her naps (thats if she naps...) I have also the same kind of thoughts around where I could have been. AND while its alright to engage in those thoughts - I also feel its good to find the other end which is "I AM BACK..." and then go from there :) I hope your journey starts to move at the pace that you deserve! Thank you for being here and sharing your experience! You aren't alone :)

I had a dear friend who was a wonderful artist-she drew, painted, and created unique artwork all her life. And yet, she was conflicted about calling herself an artist until the end of her life. When I mention or even think about myself as an artist-without conflict, as I’m comfortable in my own identity-I wish she’d realized the same. What seems a natural thing to me was something she felt was an impossible and even dishonest claim for herself.

THANK YOU for this video! I resonate with everything you mentioned. I listened to every word. I too am a self taught artist growing everyday. I have been challenged everyday since moving from science to art with insecurity, imposter syndrome and people pleasing. I am very confident in my scientific skills and identification with being a researcher. Moving into art (my family is made up of artists) really challenged me first on an identity level. Oh my the ups and downs I've had navigating social media...whew. I use watercolors in my work but am a botanical paper artist and I am finding really I am a mixed media artist that creates mostly botanical. You are correct with overwhelm of "data input" of styles, techniques, instructors, how to monetize etc. Take care and thanks again!

Thank you for the excellent video. I started oil painting about 20 years ago and I was getting pretty good at it. But one day, I had a couple of people tell me I should have done it this way or that way. I really felt unworthy with those remarks and gave up and didn't pick up a brush again. Now I have developed confidence and don't care what other people say. I have now picked up my brush again and thanks to you and Emma, I am trying watercolor. I get what you are saying and thank you for showing your vulnerabilities. Love your video's, I am looking forward to learning and just enjoying doing this for myself. Take care.

I really loved this video, Jillian. This is the first time I have visited your channel, being led here after watching a video today by Emma Jane Lefebvre who mentioned your name and talked about the brush techniques she had learned from you . I have since seen that the two of you have done some lovely collaborations together. All of what you have said in this video is so very true and I could relate to many of the points that you have made. My friend, who subscribes to you, sent me this video thinking that I was in a place where it would help me. OMG, it really did. Gave me so much food for thought, I resonated with so many of your points. I'm still thinking it through after several days. Meantime, I have a friend and we’ve been painting together for just one year. So we experience similar but different problems with our painting journey, so I sent your video to her. She just rung to tell me how happy she is after watching it. She thought all night long about what is it she likes painting and why. She made a list of pros and cons about her painting and was able to make a clear and happy decision about how to move forward. She feels like she’s had a ton weight lifted off her shoulders, that you’ve let her see that she doesn’t have to push herself to paint in a way she doesn’t think is successful for her. I’m so happy, for myself, for my friend, for the friend who sent me your video, and for you, for sharing all that knowledge with us. Thank you thank you thank you.
