Seeing lookback in the theater with my siblings was an awesome experience. The film made us laugh and made us cry. It is a film that inspires me to keep creating art. Even the interview bit afterwards was super inspirational! You could tell that everyone who worked on lookback understood the message and were able to show the world in their own way what it means to create art for themselves.

Fujimoto is a fucking genius. All of his stuff is just so unbelievably good. I've never had an author so consistently be able to make me laugh while crying about something sad.

As someone who grew up with anime in the late 90s/early 2000s, it honestly feels like we are SO spoiled now lol. You have to understand, I lived in a third-world country and to me, the very idea of being able to go watch an anime film at my local theater just blew my mind. You bet I was there when Pokemon The Movie 2000 came out, and when literally any DBZ film was shown haha. The fact that anime is now more mainstream is genuinely something I’ve enjoyed over the years. I like knowing that, as you mentioned, stepping into an anime film screening tells you the people around you and you share something special.

P.S.A. to fellow New Yorkers; Look Back will be having an extended run at the Regal Union Square theater until October 24th! And to add to the sentiments, seeing The End Of Evangelion back in March (and 3.0 + 1.0 in Alamo Drafthouse last year) made me realize just how much the theater experience can absolutely elevate the art form of anime. Sure, I already watched it like 7 times over the past five years, but it's just a whole different world when you're seeing it in the theater. Witnessing all the character moments, poignant scenes, and vast environments accompanied with a booming surround sound made all the emotion and suspense go from amazing to transcendent. Obviously, Look Back isn't going to be the same thundering, dramatic rollercoaster ride, but it's a journey no less and one that hits just as hard, if not more, for all the same reasons a theatrical treatment provides while also excellently adapting Fujimoto's original work (and adding some extended furnished to pivotal moments in original source material; particularly in the very ending of the movie).

I found out “The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store” was gonna be in US theaters the day before. I didn’t know anything about it other than Production IG animated it and animals were a thing. I went in and boy was it just the funniest, cutest, sweetest, and heart warming little movie. The audience was packed too and I was surprised to see that. It made the whole experience better. I’m happy that movies like that are starting to see american theaters more often and I will support all of the ones I can. Unfortunately tho I missed Bocchi The Rock Re: for Look Back but I think that was an even trade.

I remember back in 2017 when Your Name was airing in theaters, and I wasn’t old enough to drive so I begged my mom to drive me an hour and a half away to see it in theaters. It was my first time seeing anime in a theater, (and it was a hell of a feast for the eyes and ears)and it instilled a feeling of euphoria within me that I would chase with every subsequent anime film I would eventually go to see. Like, I thought to myself “wow, I’m so used to seeing this medium by myself on a small screen, but now I’m surrounded by people who are also interested in the same thing experiencing it together”, and I think that is very nice.

8:07 that’s how I felt after watching Suzume in the theater. I’d moved across the US for work from my parents for the first time and while I couldn’t relate to the loss of locations because of natural disasters, I definitely felt the isolation of being away from everyone I knew without the finances to do anything to try and rekindle my other hobbies like MtG. That experience was unbelievable

Absolutely love this video. Anime has been my reason for going out to theaters. Sadly, many of the ones you mentioned (DanDaDan and Look Back especially) didn't show in my city (population of 500K people. I travelled to NYC for Look Back and loved it, but Western theaters still not treating them like they should with wider releases or longer times (Look Back was in NYC for like a weekend, but might be wrong). For Look Back, loved how people laughed at the CSM references. We were all in the fandom!

look back was a phenomenal movie, was waiting for it since last year, it finally got here thanks to some chains also getting it in the US, luckily it was just the 60 minute release unlike the US where they for whatever reason were mad at a movie being less than 60 minutes so they had to add in 30 minutes just to make it 1:30

I always make a effort to see any anime movie for any series I watch because we don’t know when these films may stop releasing. Nothing stays popular forever so we should take the chance while we can. It’s a privilege to be able to watch anime movies in the theatre, before it was just on the internet.

I'm loving that this is happening and have managed to catch some of these in cinema. I'd still say that overall the marketing and distribution is still pants though. In the UK at least, we're getting the same titles as in the US, but often only screened for a single day, and not advertised at all outside of anime news sites, which naturally if you happen to have missed that article, you've essentially missed the screening. Look Back is out on the 25th of October, and this was only announced two days ago! (18th Oct), and the news sites & theatre websites aren't even clear on whether it is being screened on just the one day or multiple. Basically, will likely be missing it due to work TT-TT Anyways, that's my little angry rant. I'm glad that anime is getting more international theatrical releases overall, but I think there's still ways to go untill a truly "golden age" arrives. Looking forward to when it does!

0:12 I was upset that the Bocchi movie only showed here for 2 days, and the closest theater showing it was 3 hours away so i wasn't able to see it, i don't get why the showing was so limited (for perspective, there's like 5 theaters within 30 minutes of where i live), but I was able to see Look Back, even though it was still a 45 minute drive. I don't get why they restrict these showings so much, I know they would do well if they would just show them in at least a few more theaters.

Yea, but that's just the States... meanwhile in Europe we still don't have all season's shows licensed to be legally streamed. And in terms of movies, it's either a Ghibli (Miyazaki) movie, or as of recently, Makoto Shinkai or Dragonball movies... and when they do get a slot in the theatres, it is generally for only a week, due to not many people watching it. If you are busy that week due to work and can't find the time to go to the cinema, good luck on waiting 6 months until the movies have run their time in the american cinema and the bluray gets released, or pirates have uploaded their Yarr Harr Fiddle Dee Dee content.

Battle of Gods in 2014. GKids being smart about theater runs since they acquired Ghibli. Mugen Train in 2021. I think these are the major contributors that gave some momentum to more theatrical releases. That, and anime became more mainstream in the streaming era.
