Everyone that is trash talking the prices of these, needs to go to welding school, buy a welder, buy the aluminum and take the time and energy to weld all of these components together, go get them powder coated, then assemble all of the doors and hinges, and all the small intricacies that go into this. I was going to buy a Project M. I was really excited, envisioning weeks of fun trips to places I'd always wanted to see. But once I priced it out with the bare bones options I absolutely needed the cost went over $10k. That's a LOT of money for what is functionally a tent. For the cheaper truck toppers like the Project M, you have to climb over the tailgate to get in and unless you can lock your tailgate from the inside, you're not secure. It was hard to give up my dream but I decided that spending more money on something that would actually be comfortable and secure would make more sense. Someday . . .

@@MustSeeTech Still a pop-up but something with a lot more amenities, like a Four Wheel Hawk. Those get very expensive once you get all the options needed to make them truly comfortable. And at my stage of life (late 50's) I'd like to be comfortable. My dad had something very similar to a Hawk and it was great. Very livable. Now he has an AT Habitat and all I can say about that is just . . . no.

These are not for everyone, but definitely for some. Some people want low air drag while others don't mind pulling a fifth wheel with 70 sqft of wall sticking into the wind. Some are very lightweight. They all look fairly easy to set up which if not , that's a show stopper for me. I like the headroom. I also like the no "built in" appliance versions. I would consider one of these right now and would buy one if only they made that fabric with some type of SpaceX stuff that was R-10 insulation. To hot for summer, to cold for winter, it is the equivalent of camping in a tent as far as climate control is concerned. A camper like this , to me, is only 2 seasons. Your sleeping on the other side of fabric. I do like these concepts, great video and presentation. Thanks for taking the time.

There are popups with insulation built-in or, in one model I ran across, with insulating panels that velcro to the walls. Here's the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZWbdHtqjLCdadE Down2Mob was more into the heard-walled "Hiatus." I think OVRLND topper got less attention, but I think they make the lightest and most versatile. I'm planning on having a teardrop camper (square drop) delivered this summer. I would still like to get the lightest possible popup shell, for guests. I've got some grown nephews to "break in" on camping. My brother wasn't into anything but his books when they were growing up, so I'm gonna teach 'em how to fly fish and put together a comfy camp, training them how to train their wives to enjoy the great outdoors. Keeping things comfy in all weathers and a hard-walled bedroom are two big factors.

@@mikaelachavez1600 you can’t build light weight and be cheap about it. The only way to go lightweight is aluminum, you’d have to buy a welder you have to have the welding skills and all the components to include gas struts windows the time to put in to do this. You definitely are going to be spending more just in learning how to weld and the welder itself. A lot of people don’t understand the amount of work that goes into these. They’re not for everyone they are very expensive, but look at a Porsche that’s super expensive but you don’t hear everyone talking crap about them. People just know that they can’t afford them and that’s just how the world works. If it’s something you want you’ll afford it, if it’s some thing that is not important to you you’ll talk trash about it.

HOLEEE Crap! These are expensive. And so much more than a person needs needs in most cases. Like that one that only a shell.... It's doesn't have crap but an uncomfortable bed and it's $10,000! What that maybe cost $200 to build? Ok maybe $500? What do i have to sart a company and make these for working class folks? Priced at $2000 there would still be LOTS of profit.

Without exception these campers are ludicrously overpriced for what one gets in return! A basic rooftop tent atop four simple panels which mount to the pick up truck's tub shouldn't be so expensive to produce in quantity. It really doesn't get more basic than that, a simple tent topper without any base structure, purposeless without a truck to sit on.

The reason for the high price is mostly due to the fact that these are very low run Specialty production products. I agree that they will may not be considered a good “value” but You’re not getting ripped off because these companies have to change these prices to cover their overhead. many of these companies might make only 20 a year where other companies make a 1000 And can spread out their costs And have more efficient high output Production lines.

@@jasonw820 Why would the Russo's experience translate into "leak all the time?". This reporting would not pass a statistical analysis. Their occurrence was an extremely rare one. There was caulking around the Yakima rack that needed repair. It was repaired and all was and is well with their rig. It was also an extreme downpour - but that is what FWC can typically manage.
@epfd217
@epfd217 4 жыл бұрын
HAHAHA! So you found one video of a leak involving someone adding an aftermarket roof rack and that translates to "leak all the time"? Follow any other 4WC owners? There are countless including people who full time in the 4WC and there are no issues. They are a long-running company with a high reputation. Even the Russo's havent complained about the leak issue and it was fixed with very little effort.

Chad Kimmel oh yea! You will always get more for your money with a standard type stick an tin travel trailer! We just paid well under 18k, for a Cherokee Grey Wolf 24 JS, that has a walk around queen bed, dry full bath, Central HVAC, oven/3burner cooktop, and many other features for the money. Ok the only drawback is size an weight at 26’ overall an 5,000 lbs fully loaded for just the two of us. We tow it with a 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, that does an excellent job, I added a Weight Distribution/Anti-Sway Hitch, even though both truck an trailer are level while hooked up, but the WDH does help the whole combination ride better and deal with cross winds a lot better! So we go to an area we want to explore, find a nice spot, either alone to dry camp, or at a site, preferably a State Park as they have more space between sites and cost less. Of course there is always WallMart and other sites that allow travelers a safe place to stop and catch a nice nights sleep and pickup provisions. So I hope you all are safe out there, are having fun an adventure in good health!

Let's not confuse "over priced" with "more than you want to spend". These manufacturers are trying to fill a need. I really doubt they will have a successful business if the quality is sub par. You get what you pay for. I'm sure you would not be disappointed with any of these.

I have no idea what you just said. Many slide in campers are too heavy for most modern trucks, Most of this list is lightweight and low on features. The last few that have plumbing and options weigh in close to 1500 pounds and that is too heavy for any compact pickup or many of the half-ton market.
