9 signs you might be autistic
1. You have a hard time finding people you connect with in a deep and meaningful way. You've struggled to make friends because of this.
2. You have a really hard time with unspoken rules or rules that don't make sense to you.
3. You feel misunderstood a lot of the time when you're talking to others.
4. You find social events extremely overwhelming and/or draining.
5. You have intense "special" interests and have a really hard time not talking about them. This has had a negative impact on your interpersonal relationships.
6. You are extremely sensitive to sensory inputs and experience sensory overload on a regular basis. Or alternatively, you find yourself undersensitive to sensory inputs and feel the need to seek out more of the inputs you're not getting enough of (this is actually a relatively common presentation of sensory differences, but I dont see it talked about much, or at all, really).
7. You do certain things repetitively, which helps you regulate yourself when anxious, or is just generally calming and soothing. Things like rocking in your chair, shaking your legs, biting your cheeks and lips, flicking or spinning your pen, twirling or playing with your hair... or you have vocal stims, like making certain sounds repeatedly with your mouth, or repeating the same word or phrase over and over again.
8. You have anxiety when trying new things because you don't know how your brain will react to them. So you tend to stick with what you know you like or have had positive experiences with... like eating the same foods, wearing the same clothes, watching the same shows and movies, shopping at the same stores, buying the same brands of pretty much any type of product, you get the picture. 🙂
And...
9. You rely on routines you have created for yourself, which you've constructed carefully to make sure you get your physical, mental, and emotional needs met and minimize triggers. And when any of your routines are disrupted, you get massive anxiety. This can be due to the fear that you won't get your needs met (which may or may not actually happen), or because you KNOW the change in routine will result in your needs not being met... so you're not just anxious, but also panicking.
