i started slow jogging about 5 months ago or so. i go 3 times a week, basically every other day around the block, which is about 1 mile. it takes me about 12 mins or so. the 1st day I went thought I was going to die. I could hardly breath and it was exhausting, but I push myself to finish it. In two days I went again and it very surprising, it was much much easier. Since then I continues to be fairly easy and now I look forward to it. In all that time I think I only missed 1 day due to weather. By going only 3 times a week it's easy to manage and avoid excuses not to go.

I inadvertently began slow jogging in May. I had reached my goal of completing a 3 mile barefoot beach run the prior August, and i wanted to start up again at the same distance. So, I ran slow, not much faster than walking, embarassing slow, and took a lot of time, but I completed the 3 miles and i wasn't hurting at all. So, I continued every other day. After a month, I was still jogging below my stress threshhold, but I was completing it faster than the 1st day. I was intrigued. I tried it with other exercising: I did one plank a day, I did one dead hang a day, I did one shoulder stand a day. After a month, I could do each twice as long as on the 1st day. Minimalist exercising! I was staying below my stress threshold, but still seeing benefits! Just pointing my body in a direction with minimal exercising, and my body actually develops forward in that direction. "No pain, no gain" is not true. I did eventually include finishing my runs with an as a fast as I can sprint, to get some HIIT benefits, then jump in the ocean to cool off and get some swimming in when its warm enough.

This is so good to see. I broke my leg nearly 3 years ago - and, while the bone healed pretty quickly, the ligaments have only just healed, allowing me to get back in to running again. So I'm naturally slow jogging. and it's also partly because I'm a devotee of 80/20 running, where 80% of your runs should be in zone 2. Good to see the science behind this. I don't worry about faster runners overtaking me - and if a fast walker overtakes me, well, it's a cue for a conversation starter! BTW, I'm now 87, and only started running in lockdown, 4 years ago. Now I do ultra marathons, and train by slow jogging. I'm also vegan, and my arthritis disappeared when I gave up meat products, allowing me to run pain free. On no meds, and living my best life!

Thanks for the video! Always entertaining 🙂. A few questions if you don't mind: I have started slow jogging, and I'm excited about the concept and the likely benefits. However I've been struggling to land on the balls of my feet. It doesn't feel natural for me yet. Also, the bigger issue with landing on the balls of my feet, is that I'm finding it's causing a lot of strain in my calf muscles. Once, on a recent jog, I felt like I "pulled a muscle", and needed to "hobble" the rest of the way home. Another time I jogged home successfully, but almost as soon as I got home, both my calf muscles seemed to "seize up" and I've been hobbling around my house for the last day or so. I'm expecting the muscle strain will go away in a few days, but it does mean I need to stop jogging until it does, and it seems to indicate I'm probably doing something wrong. I have been trying to "take it easy", and I'm not running continuously (I'm taking breaks every few minutes). Thoughts on how to prevent this issue? Also, you -- like me -- seem to have a "skinny" body type. But, unlike you, I've developed a lot of weight around my stomach. Any thoughts on losing belly weight? Thanks!
@sendykafitover40Ай бұрын
@@gregt301 Here is my unprofessional, unqualified opinion. Calf muscles, you are working them like never before in your life. I had the same problem. Take a day or two of a break and let them recover. Help recovery with a ball and roller. So that radio Taiso movement where you lift youe heels - that relaxes the calf muscles and makes the blood flow there. I also work a lot standing up on 2 yoga bricks at a standing desk (a desk and a stool and a laptop) and lower my heels in a similar movement. DSY applies. If you let them recover they will get stronger. It's only now after 5 months that I noticed that my calves don't feel so tense any more after the jogs and my calves got bigger. So give it time. Like that community post. Things need to adjust to the new loads. Be kind to yourself, don't push..on the other side is an injury 😜. Do something else, cross train with walking cycling swimming. Losing belly fat. Oh man. The next next video is about metabolism and how it doesn't work the way we've been told. So wait for that one and make informed decisions. Exercise is a drop in the bucket of energy needs, so also diet, BUT your body will sabotage you and go onto "starvation mode" if it gets the wind that is getting less. So you don't want to trigger... Man, this is a whole big topic. 😂 Check out Herman Pontzer's Burn if you can't wait for the video 😆

@@gregt301 oh by the way, thought is something calf-wise. Remember the "do not push of with your feet" part from the first video? If you're bobbing up an down a lot than that's what may be also putting a lot more strain on them. If you can land on the ball of your feet and then use your heel to propel yourself further forward that would be quite a trick. One I haven't quite mastered yet but practice now while learning to walk the Namba Aruki way (ancient Japanese way). But I try to shuffle my feet more rather than go up and down on them while slow jogging. If that makes sense.
@gregt301Ай бұрын
@@sendykafitover40 Thank you! I *think* that makes sense 🙂 (though honestly it's rather confusing). When you shuffle your feet, would you say that your shoes (or bare feet) actually touch the ground between steps (i.e. scuff, scrape) or do you avoid that with "clean" steps? I'm assuming the latter is preferable. I haven't had a chance to read the Slow Jogging book yet (but probably I need to do that).
