Welcome to the FIRST episode of "Movies vs. Manuscripts". A show where I analyze the differences between Peter Jackson's adaptation of "Lord of the Rings", and Tolkien's original works... scene. by. scene. Today we start with the prologue.

I am NOT a Tolkien professor, and I haven't been studying this for decades. I am simply a fan. If I missed anything, please let me know in the comments and I will be sure to make corrections in the next episode!
By the way... I LOVE the movies. These videos are not to hate on Peter Jackson or the films at all. Simply comparing the adaptation to the original. :)

As mentioned in the video, with a series of this magnitude I am bound to make mistakes! I am not Tolkien expert, just a fan having some fun with you all. :) Below are some errors that people have kindly pointed out. Feel free to reply to this to mention anything you noticed I missed. 1. Anarion's bloodline did survive and his sons, grandsons, etc... went on to be kings of Gondor. 2. Technically all the rings were made for the elves, but Sauron stole some them and gave them to dwarves and men.
@KorriTimigan

But Anarion's line did survive, they ruled as Gondor's kings for over a thousand years before the line ended.

Came here to say this. In fact, the sundering of Arnor and Gondor happened because the cousins couldn't agree on who should be high king of the Realms in Exile after Isildur. Weird thing to miss.
@redmo11
@redmo11 18 күн бұрын
To be extra specific, none of the rings were originally made for Men or for Dwarves, they were all made by the Elves for themselves using Sauron's teachings, to 'ward off the decays of time', make Middle-earth 'as fair as Eressëa' etc. Then Sauron took them all during the war, except three that were made by Celebrimbor alone and thus 'unsullied' but still 'subject to the One'.

Jackson adaptation owes more to Ralph Bakshi than Tolkien in that lots of his earlier story-telling could be argued is a visual scene-by-scene upgrade of Bakshi's cartoon; it being the pre-visualization of Jackson's live film-version.

The movie of "Fellowship" does Isildur no favours, making him look obsessed with the Ring. He doesn't try to conquer the world, but stays in Minas Tirith for a couple of years, instructing his nephew on ruling Gondor, and then heads north to seek the counsel of Elrond about what to do with the Ring. His escort is attacked along the way and the Ring is lost, along with the Elendilmir.

I can't wait to see follow-up videos on this. I really do wish they showed the fight with Gil Galad, Saron, and Elendil. I feel like it would have shown more depth/sacrifice/cost of victory. To be fair, the final duel between Gil-Galad, Elendil and Sauron does take place at the base of Mount Doom, it's just that only Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur are present along with the combatants.
@factorfantasyweekly
@factorfantasyweekly 12 күн бұрын
It’s not much of a duel. Gil Galad doesn’t contribute, and Elendil walks forward to get swatted away like a fly. 😂 As mentioned, the book says they fatally wound Sauron. So they definitely put up a better fight than is shown in the movies.

Small correction: Sauron didn't make 16 rings of power for Men and Dwarves, they were originally all meant for the Elves. But seeing how his plans failed, after sacking Eregion and taking them from Celebrimbor, he gifted them to the Men and Dwarves.

If I remember, the intro to the movies was more of a opening to the film who didn't know what Lord of the Rings was, and for that who didn't read the books. So it was to set up a rough outline like plots that happened in the Second age, with the making of the rings, giving them to the Men and Dwarves, Elves making there own, the One Ring by Sauron, the Siege of Barad-Dur, cutting the hand, the Shards of Narsil, Isildur being killed and the Ring lost for centuries, Gollum finding it then loosing it, Bilbo having the ring... Then fading into legends and myths. Then the real opening for The Fellowship of the Ring. So I wouldn't say he go it wrong, I say he had to make an Epilogue for the movie to say this what roughly happened, and this is what's going to happen.

Totally agree! As I say at the end of this video, a lot of the changes are good things because they adapt it better for a visual/film format. I’m not saying they subjectively were in the “wrong” for changing something. I’m saying that they factually got some things “wrong”. Like when Sauron steps on the sword. Do I like it more for the movie? Yes! But is it factually *wrong* based on Tolkien’s original lore? Yep!

Great video, can't wait to watch the rest. While they did lay seige to Barad-dur the final duel took place on the slopes of Mt Doom which is fascinating to think about. Sauron with the ring, which is more powerful the closer it is to Mt Doom, was still defeated by a man and an elf. A last alliance. PS - will you cover Gimli trying to destroy the ring with his axe in Rivendell? It's my least favourite change though I understand why it was done.

To be fair though, Elendil and Gil-Galad were _not_ normal. When Frodo and Sam caught sight of Barad-Dur in the distance the sheer power and terror of Sauron's revealed presence (this being a Sauron that was somewhat weaker than the one who fought the two kings) crushed their spirits from _over_ _four_ _miles_ _away_

An important difference to note about Lore Isildur versus his movie counterpart is that he wasn't a jerk. He wanted to stay and fight, but his sons all but forced him to try and flee, offering themselves up as sacrifices to protect their king. The Ring slipped off as he tried to get away, but it was a tragic turn of mischief against a valiant hero rather than a last joke played on a weak-minded coward.

Excellent video, i just suscribe. ( Cannot wait for Arwen to glow like Glorfindel....like she saw the three of Valinor and slay a Balrog, i understand the point to create stronger character... but Arwen is Luthien ... and i honnestly don't know why they give her this form in the unseen world...) And the kung fu mages part... i understand that Jackson don't like the idea and the concept of Maia and it show in those movie, he never adress the nature of anyone, and maybe Saruman of many color would have been.... wierd XD Like ( the weed of the halfling clearly affect your mind... do you wan some LSD ) sorry for my english im french ;) But i think this is crazy that... this guy... Peter Jackson... success with LOTR... i mean.. have you watch his previous movies ? ... mainly The Feebles, a dark puppet musical horror comedy! But i think is streng was to create narative fallowing multiple characters, after he play with is toy and we watch the show. I'm curious on your point of view on Arwen representation... and power... ( Bombadil remain essentiel to the tolkien lore but if Jackson don't like the maia and the songs... it's better for him to not be there and not been misrepresented....like ... some stuart ;) Thank you again for your video!

Now you're going to make watch the movies again, you evil person! To be fair to the movie, the narration didn't say who forged the rings nor who gifted them, just that it happened. The only ring explicitly stated as being forged by Sauron was the one ring to rule them all. The movie also didn't say how long the battle was. I guess it sort of implied one battle, but I always assumed it was a long campaign since it shows scenes of destruction in the lands, and then showing the climactic battle.

Peter Jackson didn't get anything WRONG, he made the trilogy " based on the books " not an exact copy of. It take about 54 hours to read the books, do you want to sit in a movie theater for three 18 hour movies. I personally find Tolkien's writing incredibly boring but then he is an English professor. He will take a whole chapter just to tell you what color Elrond's hair is and why. PJ took all the boring parts out and ended up with the three greatest movies ever made.

Peter Jackson got EVERYTHING wrong. While I enjoy the films as cinema, and they are certainly deserving of merit in that regard, I still say that Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the worst literary adaptations ever made. And a lot of the horrible choices made in regards to adaptation often lower the quality of the story as cinema: The dispensing of Tolkien’s morality. The uncanonical failures of nerve. The disregard for proper tone. The elasticity of pacing. The flattening of narrative. The interminable battle scenes. The complete destruction of characterization. The degradation of Tolkien’s prose, reducing beautiful sentiment to corny greeting card mush. The relentless trivialization of the story. And perhaps most egregiously, the facile appreciation of the book thinly veiling a profound and contemptible lack of comprehension of its themes. This is in addition to the enthusiastic copying of an alarming amount of shots, scenes, and entire sequences from Ralph Bakshi’s animated adaptation from 1978.
