9 Things to Do in The Upper Peninsula of Michigan
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what sorts of adventures await you in the UP? The trees conceal the fact that this is a land of waterways. There are lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and springs all over. Want to go to the beach...no problem! The UP is surrounded by the Great Lakes. Sandy beaches, and no salt or sharks! If you want to go boating (but control your own destiny) consider Kayaking. The myriad of waterways are home to otters, eagles, and endless beauty. If you don't feel like going by boat, the National Lakeshore offers sweeping vistas, amazing hiking, and places to camp. There is no shortage of adventure on the Upper Peninsula!

First off, KUDOS for your pronunciations of all things Yooper! Especially Kitchi-ti-kipi and pasties!. Being a lifelong resident of the U.P. it always warms my heart to see people who really enjoy being here and treat the area with the love and respect it so deserves. BTW, I grew up 6 miles from Miner's Castle.

Hey der Mister tanks for comin to da U.P. eh! I was born a Troll (someone who lives BELOW the Mackinac Bridge) but after living here for so long now, since 1967, I consider myself a Yooper. However native born Yoopers will beg to differ with me. I grew up around Munising and Miner's Castle which you featured was only 5 miles from where I lived. Even though the winters here are daunting, there's awesome beauty in all four seasons here. I am PROUD to be a Yooper....one of the 3 percenters!

Love it up there. Unfortunately I haven't been up there since before Miner's Castle lost a turret. Places I would recommend: Fayette State Park on the Garden Peninsula. It consists of a ghost town that used to process iron ore into pig iron via two large blast furnaces. They've done a lot of work stabilizing or restoring elements of the town and it makes an impressive display of 19th century small town life. Touring the Quincy Mine just north of Hancock, MI on the Keweenaw peninsula. It features what I believe is the worlds largest steam hoist engine which was used to move men, equipment and ore in and out of the nearly 2 mile deep mine shaft. You can also take a tram car down the hill for a guided tour of an adit tunnel. Delaware Copper Mine. Located between Calumet and Copper Harbor on US41. This is an example of an early to mid copper boom era mine. There you can take a self guided tour of the first level of the mine or explore the extant remains of surface buildings. Redridge Dam. I could almost write a book on this one. I spent so much time there and wrote a research paper on it for an industrial archaeology class. Located in Stanton Township northwest of Houghton, MI it is one of only two surviving examples of dams built of steel instead of traditional concrete or earthen embankment. It was built in 1901 to provide water for two ore stamping mills on the mouth of the Salmon Trout River. You used to be able to walk down to the location of the mills back in the 90's, but some time ago no trespassing signs went up and even the lone smokestack that was left at one of the mill locations has been removed. The dam no longer holds back much water as large holes were cut into it near the base back around 1980. Just upstream of the dam is the remains of a timber crib dam that predated the larger steel dam by several years and it still has water behind it. It used to be taller, but over 10 years ago the township tore out the top half of the dam as it was deemed unsafe. End of US41 and beyond. US 41 begins it's journey south to Miami FL a mile or two east of Copper harbor. While the pavement ends there, a dirt road continues on toward the very tip of the Keweenaw peninsula. On this road a 4wd vehicle with decent clearance or ATVs are a must! GPS is also advisable as the road is not marked and it branches off to various places in the area. At the tip of the peninsula there are two popular destinations. One is High Rock Bay, which is a picturesque setting to spend a few hours exploring. The other is the location of the Keweenaw Rocket Range. Scientists launched test rockets here from 1964 to 1971 collecting meteorological data for NASA. Not much here except the concrete launch pad and a commemorative monument, but the rocky coastline here is a draw of it's own and in the distance you can see the Gull Rock lighthouse just off shore of Manitou Island. Obviously there are tons of other places, but this post is long enough already.😃

I've been to all corners of this great country and there are great places border to border. I grew up in Michigan (ok, I aged in Michigan but I still haven't grown up) and have yet to find the right words to really describe the U.P. to people that have never been there. If there is a magic place in this world it is the U.P. My favorite bumper sticker is from there as well. It reads "Great lakes, unsalted and shark 🦈 free"

I've been to the UP many times. Make sure you wear some strong bug lotion as the ticks are ferocious. Not to mention the mosquitoes due to all the wetlands up there. Also, beginning summer brings around the black flies which bite hard and will leave you with a weak of welts that itch like crazy. A beautiful place, but be prepared for the itty bitties that bite. I think Fall is the best time to take in the UP. Just gorgeous with spectacular colors!

Where is the waterfall that y'all were walking on with the drone footage? My wife is from the Yoop and we're about to move up there and we would like to go to that one, she's never been.

As a Yooper, fall is the best. No bugs. However, there is a downside. With fall, you know that winter is on it's way.❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

This video has several different tracks, but I assume you mean the last one. It's called Breath Again by Crystal Shards. You can find it on Epidemic Sound.

I don't remember exactly it was somewhere near Mackinaw City, might have been the shore at Headlands International Dark Sky park. There's a public beach there at Trails End Bay. It wasn't the best spot, but we did find some fairly large rough chunks. They need to be polished.

Don’t forget a side of gravy with the pasty, and late July the flies can be unbearable. Our family gets up there as often as we can.
