It starts to become addictive once you see your savings grow, you start to feel more defensive of your savings when it comes to purchasing decisions.

Yeah this is something I noticed once I started using money more wisely. I used to spend every dime I had and would impulse like crazy and now I find it so hard to let go of money even if its something I need.

I never believed this until my savings grew and grew, then I began to see big purchases as "how long will it take to replace this?" And helped immensely. Realising the $200 sheet set would take an extra week to replace to get back to where I am now... I didn't need them now and will wait as current sheets are fine.

Something I always remember about sales. No matter how big the discount is, the only 100% discount is the item you don't buy. Before you buy it, ask yourself if you truly 'need' something, or if you just 'want' it.

"When you are young" THAT is your super power! My mistake was not growing up poor (which I did) but not thinking that I wasn't in a position to save. There is always that one movie you can not see, that one fast food meal you can not buy. Save even $10 every pay if that is all you can. Get those spending and saving habits down now so you won't even have to think about it when you get that "better job" and you will already have money saved before you even start that "better job". Your youth is your super power.

When I go to the grocery store I only buy things with coupons, on sale, or on clearance. I then make my meals based on what I purchased. I'm vegetarian and eat mostly organic and have saved much money shopping this way. Also, the grocery store has a savings plan with a gas station to save on gas. It's a win win.

Learning how to have a healthy diet at the lowest cost goes a long way. Buying fruit in bulk, buying frozen veggies and reduced meats. Also, switching to store brand detergents, laundry powder, soaps etc. They do the exact same thing as named brands. Unless you wanna be a body builder (or are losing a lot of weight) working out from home or in parks, screw the gym member ship. Not going to the gym saved me like 600 dollars a year, and my fitness routine is still productive. - Joe, Melbourne Australia

Good points and presentation Gabe. Another way to save is to learn some carpentry skills so that you can work with one professional carpenter and use some project management common sense to build your own small home. I did that when I was 37 and I paid off the small mortgage quickly which helped me retire early.

I am recently debt free and am currently saving as much as possible but I do cave here and there and spend money on purchases that I didn’t budget for. I’m wanting to eliminate the desire to do that. I think one thing young people "buy into" is the retiring from a job after 20 yrs. That myth is keeping a lot of people in dead end jobs, and the facts are...at 19 1/2 yrs or so...the company you poured your youth into is going to find a reason to fire you outright, and find a way to keep your hard earned pension...if you even have one. The more honest look is you're going to have at least 6 to 10 different places you will work during your life. Why? The facts are companies reorganize, bankrupt, embezzle wages etc., only hire people they can enslave etc. The only way out of this, is to find your version of what Gabe Bult does. Do it now.

Focusing on reducing the big expenses and ignoring the "how dare you but takeout coffee and have nice things!" crowd. Why save small amounts depriving yourself of small nice things when you can save large amounta on big expenses that you'll barely notice. Rent, utilities, car (finance is such a con, buy a cheap reliable second hand car), phone bills etc are better ways to save that still let you enjoy the small things
