Anyone familiar with either the vintage Grand Prix scene, or with some of the older Gran Turismo titles will of course know all about the stunning era of streamliner racing, and one of the best known names in that scene was of course Auto Union, or as we know them today - Audi. The Type 52 was a proposed top tier exotic intended for the road and born from those 16 cylinder GP monsters, and had it not been for WWII, it would have doubtless been one of the fastest cars in the world in its time...
Now in 2024 though, we can finally see this vision come to fruition thanks to builders Crosthwaite & Gardener, who were commissioned by Audi themselves to finally build this aerodynamic beast using its original sketches and blueprints, albeit with a longer wheelbase, higher weight - and a whole lot more horsepower from its 6.0 litre supercharged 16 cylinder engine. What a monster...

Projects like this are extremely important in my opinion, cuz it's preserving automotive history, and I'm so happy to see Audi's effort in trying to rescue or replicate the lost Auto Union cars (some of them were destroyed in accidents and the others were captured by the Soviets during the split of Germany after the end of WWII), because one thing that makes my heart hurt is seeing historic cars and tracks being lost forever (which btw would be a cool video to do), like Reims Geux, Aerautrodomo di Roma, the Lotus Mark I, the original Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, among many other important pieces of history gone forever or for indeterminate time.

@leomux2004 . Jobs, just imagine how many unemployed people, worldwide, would be happily employed in the supply and craft chain for this car and other "classics" that are digital-free, therefore much less complicated to make. Imagine.

I hate to break this to you, but its literally happening now and has been since the the mid 80s, we have super/hyper cars that are the modern equivalent of this, they just look different because it wouldn't make sense to make cars like strange yet gorgeous cubish teardrop shapes again, as we now have computers to see that its not an efficient shape aerodynamically, and way better materials and manufacturing processes. Be happy you're around for them, you think the same of them as people thought of this car at the time, and you don't realise how special they are, and you won't until they're gone, none of us will, until its too late.

@@Elbowbanditest2003 a lot of cars nowadays aren't low-drag mainly because low drag shapes tend to also be unstable at high speeds. A computer-defined shape is certainly fascinating but there's a very real human element in older cars that's thanks to the technological limitation of its time. To be honest, after 2012, I think we are finally "too late"

Yes, Audi didn't make that car, but Tatra did. Because of today's situation and the position of the brand, they turn out to be superior. But that's pure marketing. Tatra was then a space satellite for Auto Union. What kind of cars were they... (even the Germans copied them) Greetings from Serbia✌️

NOBODY made this car until 2023/24. Nobody knew of this car until 07/1989 when an article was released in "Oldtimer Klassik". Porsche designed this car as a "Type 52". Sure it somehow looks like a 1935 Tatra. But one can say Ledwinka influenced Porsche or vice-versa. I also see some influence from Porsches' earlier work, let's say the NSU prototype for the Volkswagen. This real "Type 52" is just a testiment of that time. I applaud Audi for having it built. imho, his car is just as cool as a Tatra T700 ! 🥂

the long rear looks great, so vintage. the front looks clumsy, they should have made it a bit more pointed, my opinion. 500HP is to little for 6Liter displacement, it should do like 1300HP with a turbo. the rule of thumb says 450HP per 2L displacment with a turbo.
@kristoffermangila
@kristoffermangila 4 ай бұрын
A few points to remember: 1. The nose of the Type 52 generally copies the nose of the Grand Prix car that inspired it, the Type 22. Of course difference is that the 22 is an open-wheel racecar, whereas the 52 is a road car. 2. The engine. The V16 used in the Type 52 is essentially a road going version of the Type 22's V16 engine. As for the boosting, in the 1930s, when this car was on the drawing board, supercharging is the prevalent way of adding additional power to an engine. Performance brands of the day used superchargers as well (for example, Mercedes-Benz and Bentley). Turbocharging at this time was primitive and experimental. Turbocharging really started to gain ground during WW2, when the demands of high-altitude combat aircraft necessitated accelerated research.
@joelogjam9163

As they appear to have stuck with the contemporary wheel/tyre widths available when the car was designed, it's probably best that it doesn't have 1300HP because it would be a tricky swine to keep between the ditches and shiney side up.

@josemorenoporras7506 4 ай бұрын
Like 500+ HP are not quick for those fat bicycle tires,drum brakes and camping chairs hehehehe. It is supposed to be and old engine too. Some other videos mentioned some changes in the suspension layout and some other major components. I bet they make the car better and easier to drive than older real era cars,but this is an old design brig back to metal,not a new design. Why this car need 1300 HP?
@HansOvervoorde
@HansOvervoorde 3 ай бұрын
The McLaren of the time? LOL no. The luxureous Duesenberg SJ, produced between 1929 and 1937, beat this next decade 1930s Auto Union performance by nearly 10%. The Duesenberg SJ's far simpler, therefore more reliable, straight-eight boosted 320 HP thanks to its supercharger, an innovation that Auto Union did not apply, making the Duesenberg SJ go up to 130 mph. While the Auto Union desperately needed all those beautiful aerodynamic curves to reach 120 mph and would have been a straight to private museum car, the Duesenberg reached 130 mph while being practical, its engine maintainable by most shops, obligatory dents fixable by the better local metal worker.
