This week I’m doing the final work on the stove and organise the firewood for this winter. An intruder attacks the chicken and things don’t end well.

The strange lights in the sky are Starlink satellites, When they are first released into orbit they are in a tidy line. As they assume their final positions in the array they will no longer be in a straight line at all. The first time I saw them I was quite alarmed. Then when I learned what was going on it was entertaining to view them when in a line. Great work on your cabin as always and beautiful drone shots! My condolences for the loss and injuries to your chickens. Take care!

If you can find a couple or three 2-year-old hens, it would be better for your flock as they will need one another's body heat to stay warm on the cold nights. This is my holiday gift to you. We loose chickens from time to time through predator attacks, but it's never easy as they are part of the family...we love and care for them and they thank us with eggs. I'm sorry this happened and wish you and yours well.

Oh Martijn, I am so sorry for your loss. You brought me to tears when you were explaining what happened. You are such a caring person and you can see how much you love your chickens. I love them also. I cried when you lost your spotted one and it was devasting losing your black one this way. Very careless of the dog owners. I hope your white one will be ok. She came through the last little illness and hopefully she will come through this. You are so very talented. My husband and I admire your work. Amazing job on the stove and stairs. What a strange thing for the people who stopped by to not express remorse. Ollie and you have a level of communication that is charming to watch. He is becoming a good friend. The stove with an arched stairway is beyond delightful. Thank you for sharing the process. Your workmanship is of the highest order.

I feel your sadness. I cried for 2 weeks when a hawk got one of my hens while I was at the store. Another one was attacked but made it out alive The same as you, I am waiting for her feathers to grow back on her back. I’ve been applying a purple spray medication called Blu-Kote. The purple color keeps the redness concealed (as the other chickens will peck at red) and it’s medicated to prevent infection and allow faster healing.

Your videos are breathtakingly beautiful and quite a change from Southern California where sunny and warm can become monotonous. Your chickens are very lucky to roam the land, under your feet at times, with such loving care. A free spirit, as yourself knows that a short life lived well is better than a long life in a cage. I'm lucky to have found you and hope you never stop sharing Sunday mornings with us all.

Actually chocked me up a bit watching Martjin explain what happened. The emotion was tangible. You can see by the level of effort and work ethic he cares deeply about what he does but I don't think it would be a stretch to say animals become your friends and when one passes so tragically, it hits you hard. They're not self aware like us but they have their own little personalities. Even surrounded by all that beauty, tragedy is still inevitable. Good on you Martjin for continuing to do what we all dreamed we could 😁

Hello from Cyprus! I've been watching every single episode! So sorry for the loss of your chicken. My parents owned a field outside the city where they grew chickens for their eggs mainly for their grandchildren. Once when they were away on holiday they came back to find all their chickens dead, attacked by stray dogs...who had broken into the fenced area and the coop. My mum wouldn't stop crying... On another note, your staircase is a piece of art! I envy your determination and hard work!!

@@samjl4 The complaints from astronomers are fully justified too. I've had a few of my astrophotos ruined over the past few years as a result. The satellites also affect radio astronomers. It is a huge shame. So sorry Martijn. I also wonder - is there some minimum population in the coop that the chickens need to stay warm in winter? Strikes me it must be more than "1", and "2" is pretty close to that number ... So beautiful Martijn. The sadness of one day is overcome by the joy that the new day brings. Knowing that you did your very best for all the hens will remain. Life is so fleeting, to remember each stone placed is impossible but the joy you felt when feeding your hens will always remain vivid and clear in your mind. Good on you.

I'm so sorry about the black chicken. Some people just don't consider the damage their dog can do if not properly leashed or trained with excellent recall. I loved watching you and your friend hiking among all those old cabins. It makes me wonder about the stories they could tell if they could talk. As always, love your videos because they give me a window into another world. Thank you.

Once you get the fireplace going for real and the long winter nights set in, you should do a fireside chat over some hours with a good pipe and a relaxed contemplative ambiance.

I'm very sorry you lost a chicken, it's difficult to find that. I once lost six to a nasty fox. I suggested it previously, and I will again, GET A ROOSTER! They help protect their girls, and will sound a "run for cover" alarm if there is trouble. I had a wonderful little rooster who sacrificed himself against the fox, allowing half my flock to hide. Even if you don't want a rooster, you will need more than two chickens to share body heat for the winter. I would recommend four as the minimum. If you continue to get attacks, you're going to want to consider guard animals. A gander, or a pair of geese works pretty well although they are louder than a rooster! The stove looks wonderful, and I will feel better when you have proper shelter!!

@@monaaustin7820 Yeah, no one and nothing tangles with an angry gander or a broody goose! Roosters are not always reliable it is true, the one I got after my little guy was killed was so aggressive he sent me to urgent care. It's a bit hit and miss with them sometimes. If the girls are going to free roam it's almost impossible to completely stop aggressive or hungry animals.

1. So sorry for the loss of your chicken. I am a dog owner myself and get angry when i see irresponsible dog owners. They give us a bad name. 2. My eyes lit up when i saw the hagelslag! My family emigrated to Canada from the Netherlands after WW2 and hagelslag has been a treat in our homes passed on to us by our Oma and Opa. I still look forward to Sinterklaas leaving some hagelslag, stroopwafels and a chocoladeletter in my stocking each year.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I loved that the chickens followed you around while pecking for food. My grandmother had chickens and they used to follow her into the house. She'd give them corn and shoo them back outside. It was quite the ritual. Poor Hestia without her tail feathers. We had a bit of snow yesterday. Winter has arrived in Colorado. Our temperatures will yo-yo for another few weeks. Have a good week Martijn!

Oh my goodness Martijn, the walk into the surrounding mountains with wonderful background music, happiness! And then tragedy happens. It made me sad, sick, and then angry. I was glad you were able to find coal. She will be missed. 😥 On a happier note , I am so glad you be moving in your cabin next week. The fireplace wall looks amazing. By pointing all of the stones that should help stop any unwanted creatures. Definitely will be more comfortable. Time to bake more bread and an apple pie. This time it won’t burn the crust. The bread with the chocolate sprinkles... it is fitting to "Tell me you are Dutch, without telling me you are Dutch". I was shocked when I saw it for the first time in NL. I am in the relationship with German now and she lived close to NL and she is/was doing this NL chocolate bread too. The rest of the video amazing as usual. I also saw your newest videos and I am glad the white hen made it and I am really sorry for the black one. It really looked like it hit you hard.
