Recovering from a cold, I'm moving on slowly. I've picked up the rest of the kitchen and the final floorboards go in. The stove likes the fire and the chickens don't like the snow.

Stop and look at your work. You restored the walls and roof. The concrete work. The fireplace. The floor. The fire wood, plumbing. You have come so far. Congrats and thank you for sharing this with us. If I was a young man I think I would do the same and leave the rat race. Take care and have a merry Christmas!

I am so addicted to Martin's channel. I look forward to Sunday mornings because I get to fly away to the mountains of Italy and watch this amazing man do the things I cannot! Your work ethic and determination, Martin, are second only to the masterful and well thought out details you put into restoring this stone house and it is so remarkable. So happy to see that you are able to get out of the tent and be in a warm environment with the onset of winter. Blessing to you, young man, know that you bring joy and peace to all that watch you weekly with anticipation!

Martijn please be careful with the chickens they can get frostbite on their feet and they are prime targets for foxes now, they should spend the winter in the coop, you put down pine shavings in their run over their poop and it will be deep bedding and help to keep them warm and then you can take it out in the spring and let it sit for six months and then use it for compost.

As you can clearly see at 8:35, the stable is anything but tight. There are wide gaps between the wooden planks. In addition, a herd of two animals is far too small to keep each other warm. He could also take them into the house for a few weeks; if they were parrots of a similar size, that wouldn't be a question.

My husband and I did something similar to you but with much more professional help, some thirty years ago. We chose a place in Liguria, where it rarely snows, so we are probably on the other side of those mountains. We had an enormous advantage, there were two of us. We have lived here permanently for about twenty years now and still love it. My husband is well into his eighties and still finds plenty to do around the ground.having houses like this never allow us to get bored. It's a real pleasure watching you work and bringing back such happy memories of our youth. Keep it up.

It's a week or two back since I commented on a white Leghorn hen on the farm when I was a child. It got attacked by a neighbours dog and lost its tail. For some months we could pick her out from the rest as her tail was whiter when the new feathers grew back in compared to her body plumage that was yellowed by sunlight. Martijn's one has grown some new plumage very quickly. - maybe because she was cold !

Well almost perfect. Being totally reliant on solar without any wind power to supplement it in the winter is a bit of a hole in energy supply that must be filled with a gas/petrol generator if he wants to charge his batteries, given the site has no connection to the national power grid. Obviously wind has it's own problems, but in the winter it's significantly more reliable than solar given the shorter days and possibilities of snow blocking the array.

Hello Martjin, the small paths you walk every day due to the temperature variations between day and night will melt and then freeze and become very slippery. But now you have an abundance of an ecological anti-ice product at your disposal, stove ash! My grandfather threw it on the path that went up to the chicken coop. During the day the ash helps the snow to melt and when cold it is incorporated into the ice making it rough and much less slippery. Furthermore, the ash does not damage the underlying grass, in fact it is a good fertilizer that will make it grow more abundantly in spring. Seeing is believing!😀

Not a bad idea. Never occurred to me, I don't live in a house warmed by wood any longer, but that sounds like it could work pretty well. Not sure about how much roughness it actually brings. Sounds like something that'd work better in warmer climates (like Martijn) -- but I suspect here up north in Scandinavia, it's not really going to work out.
@abc-ls1ge
@abc-ls1ge 4 ай бұрын
@nomindseye You're right, the south of the Alps surrounding the Po valley, where I am and also Martjin, has a particular snow regime. The snow falls to low altitudes if it finds a cushion of cold air and the humid air rises from the Mediterranean, then it snows heavily until the cold air is dissolved by the relatively warmer one. Since I was a child I have seen it snow with cold snow for a few hours, then increasingly wetter until it became rain. Now with climate change it happens more and more rarely and the snow stops at 1200, 1300 meters right at the altitude of Martjin's cabin. I therefore confirm that ash can be mixed with snow if it is moist and melted during the day. At northern latitudes it probably doesn't work

Maybe try the old European trick of hanging a portière, a heavy curtain (or even a rug) in front of the door. Funny - Monday morning in Australia and yesterday we watched this movie as weather was 'indoorsy' (typical 'summer' in our area - 18c (64f) AND rain BUT it was 30c 3 days ago and expected to be 28c tomorrow!)!! It was the first time I did not enjoy a JR movie - the list of jarring issues with the plot is too long to mention. I totally agree with you that Martijn indeed is creating a sustainable idyllic lifestyle which holds a lot of promise. You may enjoy this Australian documentary about a couple of visionaries who are keen to improve our world kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2Wyc5aIfb1keMU (there is also a British farmer doing something similar in the UK). Many decades ago when I still used to ride - I witnessed first hand the devastation of a drought in the Canberra area and riding past carcasses of livestock is a memory I could do without. Martijn, many are talking about this. We are concerned for the chickens. While there are cold weather breeds and many others have adapted to cooler temps. They are basically a more warm climate bird. below zero seems quite cold to me. I am more of a warm climate human,lol. Seriously a heavy load of straw, not hay, in the coop area and some temporary, but well secured covers for the walls would be in the best interest of the hens. I hope you have also winterized their diet for the cold. Info should be available on line if you haven't. But like us they need some extra calories for warmth in winter. If I could knit, I would knit a chicken sweater for the white hen to make up for the lost feathers. She would be cozier for the coldest months. Love your videos! Love what you have done with the stone cabin! Happy Holidays to you and yours.

I was so happy to hear your report that the stove is working perfectly. After all the planning and hard work to execute, it must have been so sweet to have that confirmed after building several fires and living with their effect! The chestnut floor is looking wonderful - should be even prettier after you oil it. And as always, your chickens give me a chuckle... this week it was at 20:17, where white chicken sniffed the air, decided "nope", and went back inside. 🙂

Martin everything you have done is so meticulous and beautiful. I am so glad you will have your kitchen inside this winter. I am writing from Ontario Canada and it gets very cold here in the winter. I kept my laying hens in a 100 year old barn that was drafty, but we secured the chickens in an area with second hand storm windows, covered the walls with Tyvec and repaired the floor to keep rats out. We are surrounded by farms so it is a problem sometimes. Have you considered enclosing the coop with some ventilation for the colder months. Joyeux Noel🎄

So much to be proud of yourself for and so much gratitude here to get to watch the process. Icelandic Landrace chickens would be perfect for your environment. Number one, they fly really well and are practically immune to predation. Number two, they absolutely adore the cold and thrive in it. Number three, they hardly need any food or supplements (calcium, etc) at all since they prefer to catch bugs and eat wild food. Their little mohawks are pretty cute too. Of all the different breeds of chickens I raise right now, they are my favorite. I wouldn't try to raise them from an egg though in your situation, find pullets or you are going to have to feed them live food until they can fend for themselves. Hatching them is a huge pain in the butt unless you have a lot of bugs around or can raise their food and feed it to them. But the adults are really well worth it in a mountainous or cold environment.

Through your journey I have learned to be content with what I have. You finally live in your "happy and contented place on Earth" and that, I believe, is what you have been yearning for. As you bring us along, I know your YT "family" will continue to learn from you. You are blessed with the gift of teaching, often without words, to the rest of the world how to live in contentment and be at peace with ourselves. With you needing time away, you remind us that rest and tranquility are needs in our fast-paced world of technology and speed. When I see you stand above the valley in your "special spot", it reminds me to take time away from work and the rush of Life, to appreciate nature and the Creation around me. It reminds me too, to step out of my work life and walk outside to replenish my soul batteries. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for showing us the way to being content with what we have and are.
