The reason this boat is so nice is it was redone 8 years ago, then maintained by someone with deep pockets. And was a working boat only 24 years in total before that. Not for me to pass final judgment on it, it certainly has a lot to offer but probably as a local charter boat. Thanks for posting, you two, love your enthusiasm and your love for boats!

These boats were originally designed as "buy boats" for the Chesapeake Bay oyster industry, though they could be used to haul a dredge or net as well. The bugeye would anchor in a convenient location and the "tongers" would come alongside at the end of the day to sell their harvest. Then the bugeye would sail to market, usually Baltimore, and sell them at a seafood distributor. Some of the old wooden boats are still in existence in museums like Mariners Museum in Newport News, VA and Chesapeake Bay Museum in St Michaels, MD. They are indeed ketches, as the aft mast is shorter than the forward mast and it is stepped forwad of the rudder post. Mast rake has nothing to do with sail rig type. The masts were raked aft so that the sail halyards could readily be used to hoist loads aboard.

@@SoupyOatmeal Thanks Joe. Some of the nonsense I see and read on you tube has me wondering if I should even comment anymore. So much ignorance coupled with arrogance. Not a good combo. I know these boats pretty well because I am from Norfolk and some of them were still around when I was a boy. We would occasionally get an old bugeye or skipjack at Cobb's Marina in Norfolk. The real work boats were shallower in draft and cabin coachroofs were lower because they were made for commerce, not comfort. The bugeye was a development of the Chesapeake Bay log canoe which was derived from Indian dugouts. You can see them at Mariners Museum.

interior ergonomics is a bit off for a modern, live aboard blue water cruiser. Can you stand in the engine room? Looked great - would be interested in the "swing keel" setup. The heads look very nice. The cabins seem a bit cramped and single bunks - are great for some, yet was there even a queen sized bed in that 60"+ The bowsprit looked great yet that could be a cost in the marina.

Hi guys!! Nice boat. The Bugeyes were oyster draggers in SHALLOW waters, NOT designed for deep water. I have talked to a few people who have coastal cruised them and they do well, for myself out in the seep blue with big waves and swells that flat bottom will pound hard. Now this is the first one I have ever seen in Aluminum, have seen a few in steel. The Interior still has that workboat feel about it. You are right, it is in fantastic shape, and worth the money being asked.

Congratulations and good luck ive sailed a 65 steel hull before but not a 70 Aluminum the Steely was built by a couple of brothers in Texas in the early 70s and she spent several years in Florida after a circu navigation trip she was a beast and was a bitch to motor in and out of docks with the 4 cylinder gas motor we used to put crew on the bow to tell people dockside to move because We cant stop the boat under its power the history of the boat is pretty cool ! Thats the first sawmill sail boat ive heard of That table may be Sapale which is basically a farm grown species that is in the Mahogony family its used a lot in Woodworking as a substitute for Mahogany but ive been told it does not have the same Water resistant / durability as Honduras Ma Hogany ? I did use a small peice to replace one board on a old Chris Craft below the water line ? It kept the boat floating for the 10 years i had it You got my like i can feel your excitement. In your voice and smiles I say go for it if you. Can. We only go thru life one time. Why ot be different ? Especially if you are both in on it as a team you know the work that its going to take and if you both committ. You should be able to have some fun on board as long as you know the scary. Costs involved as I’m guessing the founder of Crocs had a ton of money to toss into her. As i guess he/ she did the bulk of the refit funding. I mean Granite tops Wow plus all that high end work you know that wasnt cheap to do it does have a little. Weird vibe going with the cabin lines but. This is perfect boat for what it was built to do. Its is a very nice very capable day sailor and would be a real gem for someone who wanted to sail around the St Pete area occasionally. It would be bullet proof for the shallow gulf area and everyone you sailed past would gawk and wish they were you. It was never built to live on and would take a very special knowledgeable owner or couple who might appreciate its unique capability in order for it to be converted to a small robust fast cruiser. The sail plan is extremely versatile and robust. For a couple that wanted to camp and do some serious sailing in the Gulf it would be hard to beat for 200 K plus another 50 or so to finish the fit. While it doesn't seem to appeal to some this is a real jewel for the right owner.

This is an interesting white elephant and is really only suitable for the use the owner made of it: daysails to entertain guests. First off, assuming the hull follows the classic Chesapeake Bay bugeye design, its totally unsuited for offshore work. Because the Bay is surprisingly shallow (controlling depth average is about 6 feet), these were designed for shallow draft . . . which means an essentially flat bottom. Miserable in heavy seas with waves over a few feet. Apart from the noted lack of shelter for the helm, the only cabin with decent sea berths (i.e. ones that a sleeping person won't roll out of at sea) is the pilot cabin aft. Problem is, there's no under deck passage between the pilot cabin and main cabin. As others have noted, keeping this at a marina will be expensive because marinas charge based on overall length, not length on deck. Not really a bargain.

From Wikipedia: "With its low freeboard, the bugeye was not generally considered to be an ocean-going vessel; some boats were however sailed to the West Indies in the off season for the tropical trade." and "Unlike modern ketches, the forward-most mast was referred to as the foremast and the after mast was termed the mainmast, although like the brogan and log canoe, the mainmast was shorter than the foremast. As with the earlier brogans and the log canoes, the masts were sharply raked, although they were set up with stays and shrouds. Unlike the brogan, however, the mainmast was raked only slightly more sharply than the foremast.4 A bowsprit with trailboards was inevitably used."

Everything on a boat is a compromise. This vessel is shallow draft, with high form stability, and is designed for extended coastal cruising and gunk holing. Such a boat will not have a spacious interior, considering the dagger board. It will be fantastic anywhere with lots of shallows, and will be able to go almost anywhere a catamaran can go, but with a monohulls strength and load carrying. If you want more space, then look at catamarans.

Served on USS Joseph Strauss DDG16 built in the early 1960’s. She was a steel hull attached to an aluminum superstructure. She was not top heavy like conventional WWII DD’s. Downside was electrolysis at the junction of the steel hull and the aluminum super structure. The joint there was crumbling and her life span severely reduced. I would like to know how they handle electrolysis on this boat where differing metals are in contact: main shaft, engine, fittings, & winches. How is she grounded or does she need to be? Pretty boat though!

Bugeyes are a Hampton bay design they are usually rigged with the leaning masts and gaff rigged so that the rig can be used for hauling cargo over. Usually they will have a center (or dagger boards) to lessen their draft in Hampton Roads. Not necessarily the boat I would choose for a an ocean going boat (they are generally a little narrow), but they will make decent speed and cover a lost of miles in decent weather...
@sanfranciscobay5 жыл бұрын
1:35 Where was the retractable daggerboard from the inside of the boat? Did it retract into the cabin space? Located 10 feet aft of the forward mast. 14:16 located between the shower wall and the diner back rest?
@jonleonard5384 жыл бұрын
First could there be a forward access from the aft cabin to the helm. Second eliminating the quarter birth, make a passage and stair to the to the mid cockpit dinning area (possible drop the dinning area to the level of the galley). Continue through to the engine hatch and ladder with stairs to the helm? Enclose the helm and the whole boat has interior passages. I am not an architect, I do agree that the layout is not great. It just looks to me that it can work with some thought. I would also eliminate the diesel and fuel tanks, replace with a sail drive and battery bank. To make the connection of interior spaces easier to do.

Do some of the people selling really believe your coming to buy these boats? Or make an offer? When they give you access? I would think some of them would get frustrated to find out that someone shows up with no money or intention to buy but makes a video instead. But on the plus side it's a free way to get the boat noticed and presented for sale without paying someone to do what you do. As long as they know ahead of time your not a buyer. Enjoyable video!
