99 Silverado HVAC/Recirculating Actuator Replacement/Issue(1)

I replaced the Motor/ Actuator on my 99 Chevy Silverado that moves the flap that selects whether to pull air from the outside in or whether to recirculate the air from inside cabin. The new actuator from Dorman I purchased at Autozone will only function when the ignition is turned to the ON position. But when I fire up the engine, the actuator will not work. Help!
It was a nightmare having to take the top of the dash off just to get at the actuator. Smaller hands, a 7/32 quarter inch socket w/swivel, 12" extension with quarter inch ratchet is what I used to get the old one off & the new one in.

I just did the same and without having to remove the top part on the dash. I wiggled my hand thru the vents and used long extensions with a 5.5 1/4" socket

Maybe I try this. For now it’s unplugged. Could deal with noise.

I believe the correct part number for that actuator is 604-120, not 604-106. You installed a 5 pin actuator, it’s supposed to be a 3 pin actuator

You are absolutely right. That guy at Autozone sold me the wrong one. I had to do this install twice cuz of that. Thanks for watching.

Does it matter if it's 5 pin? I just noticed the new one I bought is 5 pin and don't feel like returning it.

I have 2013 Silverado. Each time I press the recirculation button it blinks 3 times then goes right back to the outside air indicator. Is this a need for the recirculation actuator replacement ???

Mine sounds like a dying squirrel. I am guess this is the issue. Thoughts? I know it is not the other actuator or the blower motor. It is constant.

I put the vent on close and than I unplugged it!! Lol... after trying to take it off yesterday I gave up.lol. til next time... but yeah I unplugged for now cause mine was making a annoying clicking sound for about 4 years.lol

You can do it, bud. I have faith in you. Look up the video on how to remove it. If a knucklehead like me can do it, you can do it. Just don't ley them sell you the wrong actuator like they did with me. Good luck! Oops! I just realized I said quarter inch wrench instead of quarter inch long extension.

How!! I think you need stitches, and get out the extractor for all the blood on your seat.

So can you do it through the glove box without removing the upper dash! Seems like a lot of work! I also have a 99 Silverado that just started to do the same thing. Thanks

Unfortunately, I don't think you can. I remember using a long quarter inch extension to remove the bolts. & the only way to use that extension to remove ther bolts was thru the top, implying the removal of the top of the dash.

Did you have to re-calibrate the actuator? I have already replaced my blend door actuator, which is the one under that one on the bottom and it’s clicking. I got a new one and I’m just wondering do I need to recalibrate it after I install it ? If so, could you tell me how are you done your recalibration for that one because that is the same kind I have on my 99. Thanks

No. You don't have to recalibrate it. You just have to make sure you don't apply power to it until its fully mounted with its screws. If you put power to it before mounting it just to "test" it, you're going to mess it up. If its clicking, the plastic gears in the unit are either broken of slipping. Time to replace it.

@@victorramosjr2239 thank you. I changed it and it’s working fine as of right now. How do you know if the top blend door , the fresh air one is bad or not working correctly? Would the recirculate light not come on or blink maybe ? Thanks for your reply and help.

@@jeremyLtaylor1 that one you can see open & close By removing the glovebox door. If you lower the door and turn the switch on from resurculate to outside air you will see the flap moving in and out underneath the dash of the vehicle. Another way you can tell if it's not working right as if you hear It clicking. If you hear the little motor clicking that means that the little plastic gears inside are either cracked or the screw mechanism that turns the skiers is stripped.
