This is why I measure my carry ammo. Minor bullet setback is usually not a big problem, but when you're already significantly over pressure & near the limit, any setback can be a big problem.

Masaad Ayoob (search youtube) was a cop, now retired and a trainer, and testifies in court often as firearm/shootings/ammunition subject matter expert. He compiled actual shooting data where the barrel length, bullet type, weight, shooting distance, and general build of the attacker was known. What he found was that +P 124 and +P 147 would commonly OVERPENETRATE normally built people (average body size, not overly fat nor heavily muscled) whereas the 115 +P did NOT. 115 +P+ is going to expand a bit more than +P, but will CERTAINLY cause more damage from the 200+ fps it achieves out of 4" or 4"+ barrel.

I respectfully disagree about 115 grain defensive loads. Speer Gold Dot 115 performs fantastic in barrel lengths under 4 inches and is going so much faster than 124 that it produces more energy. Lucky Gunner's gel tests show all of the 115 grain loads exceed the 12 inch minimum, usually about 13.5-16 inches into gel and most of them expand completely. 115s usually under-penetrate when they are going too fast because they expand too quickly, but that is unlikely in most concealed carry guns since their barrels are under 4 inches. I carry 115 grain Gold Dots in my P365 and P365 XL and I trust them implicitly. However, I do agree that 124 is the better choice from a compact-fullsize barrel length.

Nice review. I actually have a couple of cases of this load. It's certainly application specific. If all you have is a 9mm G19 and/or a PCC using Glock mags, this is outstanding for varmints, assuming you can hit them. Especially from a PCC. It acts almost like a Varmegeddon (?) 223 or 300BO load. Limited range vs any rifle chambering for sure, but the effect is the same to about 50 yards. Nice presentation.

3:41 - Glad you're OK. Were wearing eye/ear PPE as one always should. Also fortuitous this was a relatively low-charge round, in a relatively blow-down/out platform. (And not your nice EVO SBR PCC -- with its need of user-made OOB part fix.) Also thank you for sharing video without sensationalizing. The even-handedness and professionalism speaks to your work. One note: I always noted when dropping bolt with CH back, some rifles do not go fully into battery depending on spring/buffer type. (Armaspec SRS comes to mind.) I never thought to test to ensure all my firearms can properly chamber a round -- with the charging handle adding friction and back. I'll look to that more now. Also curious how PSA ARV is designed. I thought all AR platforms had OOB protection by bolt carrier length + firing pin rear float. (Is this result of ARV being direct blowback..?)

Viewing your comments again, it seems the issue was bullet setback, into case volume, caused by a misfeed? I am a novice, so won't dwell on neck tension aspects. But wasn't there some note about "compressed loads" (such as Vargut 223) being "safer" for this reason? Not sure if same principle applies to 9mm.
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE Жыл бұрын
Yeah the bullet got set back enough on the jam that it increased the pressure. Likely above what the case can take. You can see the primer still looks fine. I'm guessing the case just couldn't handle it.

115 grain + p + used to be really good when speer was loading it with a gold dot, and I believe Underwood used to do the same with a gold dot as well. Looks like they are using some sort of conventional cup and core hollow point now though, doesn't seem up to the task. For my short barrel 9mm, I just used the 124 grain +p gold dot factory loading and it seems more than up to the task. That case head separation you got with the AR9 was gnarly. That bolt probably didn't have enough mass to deal with the little bit of added pressure from the bullet being pushed in. Probably started extracting just a hair too early and there's your kaboom of the case head from the body. I wonder how a locked system would have dealt with that added pressure versus the straight blowback, very interesting and im glad your hand is okay.
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 Жыл бұрын
Ah so this is the rest of the story about that kaboom round. You did get a chrono reading it looked like? Same FPS, you are very possibly correct here in that when the round got jammed it seated the bullet in too far causing a pressure spike. Glad you're alright. I guess my faith in Underwood is slightly restored again lol, knowing this was an equipment malfunction and not something just loaded extra pissin hot, even though they are loaded pretty spicy to begin with.

I love Underwood ammo, but only their Xtreme Defender and (for my .380) Xtreme Penetrator. Perhaps you'd like to give them a try. They generally beat the pants off the best HP ammo for every barrel length (and the shorter the length, the better they do), and being 'barrier blind', they don't particularly care what they get shot through (with limits, of course).

Great Video, FYI Underwood uses the Nosler Projectiles for SKU#112 which is not a bonded projectile but it is designed to mushroom at certain velocities constantly. I am not a big fan of 9mm as a primary defensive round because to get the necessary Kinetic Energy to do the Required Damage to Stop a Two legged Situation you need to a Plus P Plus 9mm in a 8 inch barrel like a MP5 or 16 inch PCC to get the Higher Velocities but the Majority of Handguns are NOT Designed to handle Plus P Plus and the only pistol I know that can handle it is the HK USP pistol which was originally designed to handle 40sw. The majority of pistols that get a steady diet of Plus P Plus 9mm ammo do become a ticking time bomb because of the extra stress on the barrel chamber becoming a hand grenade that can go off at anytime. One of the main reasons that the US NAVY SEALs adopted the SIG P226 over the M9 Beretta was that the M9 could not handle the SUPER HOT Ammo that the SEALs were using in their MP5 and the M9 were blowing up barrels and slides. I prefer to use 40sw, 357sig, 45apc and 10mm auto for defense and use 9mm strictly for target shooting or to teach someone new to firearms which is something that I have been doing for over 30 years now both in the Military and Civilian life.

@@dsrrecordsent That is INCORRECT! If you go to any Glock Manual you will see that it States that Glocks are Designed to Handle Saami Spec ammo and 9mm Luger/Parabellum/9x19/9mm NATO is rated at 35,000 PSI Chamber Pressure which is what SAAMI and GLOCK is. Now Plus P and Plus P Plus are NOT Regulated by the SAAMI a SPEC and Manufactures can put about anything they want into the Casing to increase the Velocity and the Majority of do so with a Chamber Pressure of 38,500 PSI or MORE in the Plus P and Plus P Plus and I have seen data where some 9mm Plus P Plus have been in the 42,000-44,000 PSI LEVEL which is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! I love Glocks and I own all the models except the Sub-Compacts because they are too small for me and I also do not own the 380 because I do not see a reason to buy a 380 when a 9mm is a better backup caliber but I still have the Gen 3, 4 and 5 of the 17-41including weapons like the Gen 3 Glock 24 40sw and also have the 357sig barrel for it which is an AWESOME Weapon for about anything you want to do with it. Now Glock Barrels have the Issue of not Completely Supporting the Chamber which is an issue when Shooting HOT Loads and that is WHY Glock Owners have KABOOMS! That being said someone taking a Glock 22 40sw and putting an aftermarket supported chamber 9mm Barrel in that 40sw slide COULD Shoot a Steady diet of 9mm Plus P Plus but I do not see why they would do so when 357SIG has better ballistics than the BEST 9mm Plus P Plus round! The 115 grain +P+ loaded by Federal and Winchester had a very good one shot stop record in Law Enforcement. The trend for heavier bullets using 147 grain Subsonic loads in the late 80s and 90s had mixed results in actual Police shootings. The 124 grain Speer Gold Dot standard pressure load was used by New York and New Jersey State Police. The +P version used by NYPD and other law enforcement agencies proved to be a good load with years of data. If you use the new ammunition used for micro pistols. Definitely not recommended for PCC because the gun powder is designed specifically for short barrels.

I would drop a really long-winded comment, however, I'll keep it short. I don't really see the need for +p+ in this 9mm load. Overpressure loads just wear out the firearm quicker (although, most people probably don't shoot enough of it to matter), and I feel like if you need to run 1400+ fps out of a 9mm, you might as well just use .357 sig at normal pressure. Or better yet, if you don't want the cost of .357 sig, just use a 155 grain .40 cal.

The speed is the issue with this ammo. Regular loads running 1100 ish fps in 115 gr jhp ammo runs fine and does exactly what the FBI recommends. Tools and targets just tested some the other day (I forget the brand) but through denim and cotton and 14 to 15 in penetration and good expansion. If you're gonna go plus p then you should definitely up the weight. If, of course, you're actually getting the rates velocities.

The long projectile eats into powder capacity and many JHP designs already struggle to expand through cloth at 124 speeds. The 115s are all to often marketing bs with the highest speeds and ft-lb numbers, turning into frag grenades as the bullet design can’t cope

Great test. Those are just too hot a round. I'd hate to shoot them on a 100 degree day....

3:41 is a good reason why I’m anti forward assist or beating any round into battery. If it doesn’t go in on its own it comes out. Glad you’re ok!

That’s what we call the “old codger look”. When my father accidentally put his hat on like that (throughout my entire life) it makes him look like an old codger.

Jhps wouldnt be my first choice in general but these performed well with excellent penetration fragmentation and velocity.

If you are dumb enough to buy 9mm +p+ you might as well just get a gun in .357 or a 10mm, or maybe a 357 sig. I never trusted any +p+ ammo.

Yes 9mm 115 grain is wayyy to light for +P+ velocities….I’ll stick with my 124 Grain +P Winchester Ranger T…..Good penetration (15”) and Marvelous expansion (.65 caliber) minimum and (.79 caliber) Maximum expansion😱

I hate to tell u but a glock doesn’t have a good supported chamber, a factory glock would be one of the last guns I would fire +p+ ammo out of, if u don’t believe me just do a little research
