This originally aired in 2003. As of the last update I found (March 2020) Shelbie passed away just after her 19th birthday, Zoe was starting a law degree, Emily was studying for a nursing degree, Hamish was studying for a degree in engineering and William was moved to a residential home but had been diagnosed with an inoperable tumor on his kidney that could cause a fatal bleed at any moment. Nathan dropped out of the series in season 8 and no updates on him.

I have dwarfism myself. Grandma's attitude isn't surprising, but it still makes me sad. So so much of a little person's attitude is how your family treats you. If you treat your child as so different and so disabled, his worldview will be so negative. It makes it all the more difficult to deal with the negativity and differences a LP will undoubtedly face.

I thought the same thing -- I actually started shouting at the computer screen, I was so aggravated. I'm good friends with two men with dwarfism (all of us are actors - I met them in theatre productions). They're both super smart, funny, talented, engaging, extroverted and fun to be with. They both do everything that a person of average height would do, and I know for a fact that neither of them was raised believing that they were "less than" anyone else, or that they should accept a life filled with rejection, hatred, failure and despair, and maybe just crawl into a hole forever instead of trying to achieve anything. I seriously don't know why Hamish's family is already dangling anvils of doom over his life. He's adorable and seems to be very well adjusted. Now is the time to encourage that, remind him daily of how loved, capable and resilient he is, capitalize on his strengths, and give him all the confidence in the world to go out and achieve whatever he wants to. I wish the people inside the TV would listen when I shout these things at them. :)

I know it’s been a year since you commented, so I hope you see this. My friend Gina works with a reporter in my area that does special interest stories, like a news magazine type of show. The producers evoke emotional responses to make a more interesting program. They may have asked lots and lots of questions of the grand mother, then edit it, taking what she was saying out of context. Gina absolutely hated working with the reporter here, everyone has been watching him for at least 40 years, and as Gina explains, it’s an amazing gig, it looks fantastic in the film career space to have that show on one’s resume. Anyway, I agree with your opinion regarding the things that make us different, my husband was born with Cerebral Palsy, and like so many of these parents his were heartbroken so much as he went thru dozens of major operations. They pushed him and seemed indifferent to him as a child, not knowing until he was an adult that mom and dad cried so much, would hide in their bedroom, or garage and get their anguish out of their system, then go back and perform physical therapy with him even when he didn’t want to, or it was painful. He is very intelligent and still pushes himself, at 56 years old to be a wonderful provider, husband and dad.

Wow Hamish’s family acts like his dwarfism is the end of the world and that he’s not going to go far or make something of himself when he gets older, he can be anything he wants, his brain isn’t negatively affected like they assume. He’s such a cutie 🥰

The grandma is probably just a woman of her time. My paternal grandma was born with hip dysplasia, and she had a similar attitude when I was born with a disability. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t love me, it just means that she grew up in a time where disability was misunderstood as something to be sorry about. I think Hamish is probably in a similar situation, with a loving family that just doesn’t understand. I also think it’s important not to sugarcoat disability. Disability can be near a neutral life experience, that you don’t wish to change about yourself, but it can also be incredibly hard. I’d imagine that if he experiences a lot of back pain due to his genetic condition, he’d probably want to get rid of that. But simply being short and not being able to reach stuff on high shelves, I think that’s a disability you can sort of deal with and adjust to in a different way, and you don’t necessarily want to fix it or cure it. But that’s my outside perspective. I don’t have dwarfism, i’m blind so that’s a totally different disability and a different experience.

When the old lady said 'you always hope your baby is going to be the most beautiful' it really made me angry. Hamish IS a beautiful little guy. How rude! Then acting like because he won't be a football or soccer star he better dazzle the world with intelligence like he is lacking something and needs to make up for it! I know this is an old film but attitudes like these actually hurt the little people community greatly.

His size and the things he has to go through will only make him stronger. I am now 59yrs old and I lived my life with the same problem. Being shorter than everyone else can be a pain and a blessing at the same time. He will survive. Being short does not stop you from doing whatever you want to do. I love to drive so I became a driver of an 18 wheeler cross country. I did get some strange looks when I climbed down out of that big truck for fuel or delivery. Unfortunately my condition degenerated to the point that I can't do that anymore and had to have my spine fused. Never ever tell a child that they can't do something that other people do. They will find a way to prove to you that they can do it. Love and encouragement is what is needed. We are all people short or tall.

That's just fantastic!! Painful, yes, but wonderful for them, if that was their choice. Medicine has come so far, we no longer have to feel the need (like this grandmother seems to) to be ashamed of, or to push these beautiful little angels to the back, so we're not "embarrassed" by them. They are just like any other child, with needs, and wants, dreams and desires. They have a right to be happy too. (I would keep that grandmother as far away from Hamish as I possibly could. She is the one with the "problem", not Hamish!)

It's really sad that people judge parents who cope with their childs disability differently. Hamish has a good life... His parents didn't have any more children than he had the best of everything. He is an Olympic Swimmer. All of the parents coped different on the show. They all love their children. Until you are a parent with a child with that disability and grew up in a culture that taught disability is terrible, you shouldn't judge.

Do you think your height is comparable or even close to the challenges of dwarfism? I'm 5'2". Fairly short. A stool or ladder helps me, but is not nearly enough for what these people need in their lives. 5ft is within the normal range of a human woman. The conversation is about those who are less fortunate then you at your height.

Nathan, the little boy with Down syndrome, had his mouth open all the time. It's a feature of the condition. I hope in the twenty years since this was filmed that interventions have been developed. When the mandible drops, it pushes backward and narrows the airway. With the tongue not up in the palate, the palate narrows and the teeth crowd.

Working with kids my whole life idk how a therapist would think thats a “safe” item, she should get a larger key or like a fake plastic toy one, a child will still correlate it to an actual key based on shape even if its not identical to the one they would use to say open a door.

I understand moms need a break but when you have other children that are getting almost no attention why not spend a night out with them instead of your friend.😑🤷🏼‍♀️🙍🏼‍♀️

It's a balancing act for sure. Sacrifices are made all around. But without some rest and respite, the Mom is of no use to any of them. Remember too that you're seeing only a tiny slice of her life. Her night out is probably a break not just from her disabled child, but from all her attention to her other children

The brain is amazing. You never assume anything when it comes to the capabilities of the brain to heal yet, I understand you have to be mindful of creating expectations that cannot be met. With the brain, there was even a discovery of a child that was born with not all of his brain, yet as he grew, so did his brain. it has been established that the younger a person is when they have this type of surgery where the remove part of the brain, the rest of the brain will reroute to take over the duties of that part of the brain that had been removed. The older, the child, the more the rerouting. It was easy for me to not create expectations through therapy. Either way, expecting more than what is possible or limiting myself to what is accepted. It is impossible to equate my situation which dealt with muscles versus the brain, except for the expectations but always never limiting the possibilities. I fear, that is, this was my situation of a child, I do not believe I could also calmly say these things. When love comes into the picture things change…. They change varies as greatly as there are sand in the ocean.

Why, Vicky, would you have had another, having lost a child to the same condition and going ahead with the birth in the full knowledge of a 50% chance of the same genetic condition, when you have three other kids who need you and no partner???

If someone has a disabled child through an accident of genetics, that one thing. Disabilities happen. What pisses me off is when parents KNOW their child will have a disability and have a child anyway. To me that is the epitome of selfishness.
