Three years in the making 'Born to be Different' is an extraordinary frank and intimate portrait of the pressure and difficulty of life with a disabled child.
In this episode, as the children enter their second year the initial shock of the diagnosis has receded but now they have to face new challenges.
Some of the children face major operations and life and death situations, others are learning to walk and talk, trying to keep up with their friends.
It’s a crucial year when these families discover how their child’s disability will affect the rest of their lives.

19:40 this gives me major ick. As a disabled person, this mindset from ablebodied people is a major reason that we struggle with society seeing us as less than. We are not less than you, we are not imperfect, we are not a disappointment. We are your kids, your grandkids, your parents, your friends. We are people just like you. Just because I’m in a wheelchair doesn’t mean I’m less than, hell, I graduated high school top of the class, two years early, and am in Uni for biochemistry, genetics, and epidemiology. I’m 18. I died 4 times when I was 14 because of a heart condition. We are not less than you.

I live with a genetic disorder called 22q. Every day is a struggle. I am facing my sixth major surgery. My dad has finally come around. He has been in denial for so long. My mom is the one who is there to support me. She is a single mom who takes care of me. I need a walker and arm crutches to get around. I feel like my head physical therapist has seen me as less then. I am now working with my longtime physical therapist who understands my genetic disorder. She takes wonderful care of me. I am not less than! I just have to do things in a different way.

My daughter has the same condition as William (Tuberous Sclerosis), she just turned 40yrs old. She has epilepsy, intellectual disability, brain, kidney & lung tumours. But despite this she has a great life & good friends. When I got sick (ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia) my ex husband left us, he said having a sick wife & disabled twins was too stressful, so he left his sick wife to be sole carer for the disabled twins. It’s actually been his loss. I’m still caring for my daughter, but her twin brother is doing well & now has his own family. I wish the best for these families.

Shelby’s family is so sweet. Seeing her brothers worry about her made my heart hurt bc even at such young ages they know how serious it is but seeing how much they care and their bond with her is beautiful. Also her moms partner is awesome! I’m so glad she has someone by her side to help support mom and also be apart of Shelby’s care . I’m a single mom to 1 and that’s hard enough, so to be a single parent to multiple children and one with a serious illness has to be extremely hard and draining emotionally and physically. She’s a super strong momma! So glad she found a partner to love her and all of her little ones 💕

Sadly it happens to many families who have disabled children. My daughter has Tuberous Sclerosis (the same condition as William in this video) & her twin brother has a disability. My ex husband left us after I was diagnosed with a chronic condition also. He said having a sick wife AND sick twins was too stressful for him. It’s been hard caring for disabled twins alone while being sick myself, but I have a great relationship with my kids whereas my ex husband has missed out on so much. I still don’t understand how a father can walk away from a severely ill child that needs much more care. As hard as it gets being a sole carer I could never give up on my disabled children.

Me too. I was born with a cleft lip and palate, almost totally blind, but at the time I had light perception and opaque corneas I had a Corneal transplant age 6 months, but that caused my retinas to haemorrhage. I then lost all of my sight by the time I was starting School age 3 or 4. My father dear, couldn't deal with all the hospital visits, admitions, stays re the above complications and digestive problems which still affect me to this day, I bled internally when I had dairy under 2 years old... The list went on, although I grew out of the dairy allergy when I was a toddler. My father dear, also, wouldn't pay child maintenance either, so... well... its his loss. So far as I'm concerned, the family who stayed around and raised me to be who I am today, they are what matters.

What’s up with people leaving their spouses over this? I know the rates are high and it’s hard from personal experience, but how disgusting to leave. Why don't doctors keep medical journals which ithought they did. I've seen other children with the arthrogyroposis yes spelled wrong. But when they have these surgeries there legs always go back deformed. I saw a case with a girl who had her feet amputated and then she could finally walk on prosthetics with no pain. So why they putthesekids through surgeries that are painful and don't work is barbaric.

@@edenelodie8558 True but that doesn't mean that teaching them discipline and responsibility should go by the wayside. Just like every other kid they still need to be taught boundaries and self-control. I agree that this situation isn't their fault but that doesn't mean they also get to have free rein. Simply saying "they're kids" is an unhealthy excuse. Letting them do whatever they want is neglectful. Providing structure and discipline is a healthy part of development. It's something that allows children to learn emotional regulation and independence. Even more so when living in a situation where there is something going on far outside of their control, such as a severely sick family member.

What an interesting documentary. What these children and there parents as well as siblings go through is horrific at times. I almost lost my daughter at 6 years old from what was seen as a large abdominal mass. It turned out to be a grapefruit size, blood filled cyst on her spleen. Just when we thought we were safe from the first surgery and didn’t need anymore follow ups it grew back and they had to remove her spleen at 7-8 years old. We now had to watch for constant infection ms that would normally be of no worries. I am proud to say my daughter is now 23 years old and as healthy as anyone else 💖💖 My thoughts and prayers go out to these brave families and children. I was born with a bone abnormality. Both my legs were turned inward and so are my feet and I was born in the 60s so back then they would put your feet in special shoes with an opening in the front and there would be a steel bar that you would have to turn gradually to make the legs go straight and make the feet go straight. And then I had to go to physical therapy to learn how to walk properly and I was also pigeon-toed. I've always had a problem with balance and being not physically coordinated so if I ever had to do sports at school I was not very good at it and I also had to deal with spine problems because I was born with scoliosis. I had to do physical therapy for that also but it was never corrected so I've been dealing with bad posture my entire life. And sometimes when I'm tired I trip over my own feet and my toes tend to point inward. When I was in my 40s in 2012 I got diagnosed with celiac disease and that explains why I was born the way that I was and why I had scoliosis and why I had other problems growing up and other problems into adulthood

1st of all the granny @19:33 reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire. 2nd I wish she acted more like THAT Mrs. Doubtfire.… that family seems like their world has crumbled and his life doesn’t matter. Awful. And Shelby’s mum smoking (@29:19) in the house ?!? She’s on oxygen because her lungs are not functioning properly. You really think smoking inside is a good idea?

I have 22q. it’s a genetic disorder. Every day is a struggle. I do the best that I can with all my medical issues and disabilities. I am thriving with my day program for adults with Autism. My state case manager for my disability services is fighting hard to get me the services I need. I do the best I can every day. I’m proud to be different!

This is a really old documentary from the late 90s/early00s. Sadly, Shelby & William passed away. I can't remember how old William was when he passed away, but Shelbie was in her late teens/early 20s. However, all the others are now in their early 20s & doing well.

I don’t feel bad for Vicky because she knew she could have another child with this and she kept having children. It’s hard enough raising children but when you know there is a 50/50 shot of your child being so severely unwell, it’s probably best you don’t keep rolling the dice.
@maryseflore7028
@maryseflore7028 2 жыл бұрын
Never mind that she ended up having 8 children in total, and only 2 had the condition. So it wasn't a 50/50 shot more like a 75/25 shot, in favor of having a normal healthy child.

This series is the Absolute best and it's so amazing to see the Grown Ups that they have become. I wish I could talk to Vickie because Most days I feel like I need someone to help me. I don't have any family I don't have anyone and I have 3 with Autism and 1 has complex medical issues. I spend my days helping others hoping God Sees me and sends me the help I need. .Not even with money that's the crazy part. My son said they picked the most beautiful children they could find for this cast. Everyone on the show is beautiful 😂❤
