When my youngest daughter was 18mo she was diagnosed with a rare blood disease and was put on the children's oncology ward. She shared a room with a 12 year old girl who knew she was terminal. The strength and bravery of these kids is amazing, humbling and they are wise beyond their years, I learned more in those few weeks about how to be a better person than I had in the years up to then.

Can we just take a moment and talk about the sister who donated to her brother. If only you knew how often that does not happen. Being someone from the states and being someone from the medical field that is actually more rare than one would think. That is huge....HUGE...that this sister did this for her brother. What brave kids

My Grandfather donated bone marrow and stem cells to his son, my Uncle, when he had leukemia. It has been more than 20 years, now and my Uncle is doing great, but for a couple of years, we did not know what would happen. My Dad (his brother) was a good match, above 95% but my Grandad was over 50 at the time and was above a 98% match. This is very rare and at the time it was the first father to son transplant in Scotland. Sadly, my Grandad is no longer with us, but it is comforting to know that my Grandad’s blood is running through my Uncle’s veins. Prior to the transplant, his bone marrow was completely killed off with chemotherapy, before my Gradnfather’s donated bone marrow was infused, so now his blood cells being produced are by my Grandad’s bone marrow.

@@kadenhiggins9338 your mother coudn't have known and she did something to help. Donating or blood is so unpredictable it could totally work or totally fail or the person could seem like it accepted and at the end rejected. Is a human body it rarely does what you expected it to do.

As a nurse I disagree that it doesn’t happen. With every patient I’ve dealt with, if family could donate then they absolutely 100% donated. With registry to donate, I’ve never heard of people turning down the opportunity to help. It’s actually very rare that patients don’t receive bone marrow.

Chloe has an amazing big brother who is so loving and wise beyond his years❣ We lost our nephew in 1999 who was diagnosed with two types of leukemia. He had a successful bone marrow transplant but because his immune system was so compromised he contracted an infection at the base if his brain. He passed just days before his birthday. He would have been 32 years old...I often think about what an amazing little fighter he was and what he would be doing today. He touched sooo many people in his young life but he's in a much better place happy and healthy in Heaven playing with all the new friends there with him and I believe he's met Sophie and Fabian. Something that can be a side affect from some kinds of zytostatica. Curles can occur as well even if the person had straight hair before. Or all body hair won't grow back ever. But then her brother has redish hair as well. Maybe a grandparent coming through.
