I agree with Never My Love being their best. Way back in the fall of 1967 I went 800 miles away to college and gave the 45 record of this to my girlfriend. She said she played it so much that she had to go buy another copy because she wore it out.

All he can do is cherish her and hope she SEES his love, not just hears about it. That is what the song says. It is very romantic that he can't find words BIG enough to use. Instead, he must let his heart SHOW her a love so special it makes it difficult to even speak about it. In other words, some "flirty" guys have magic words to "hook" a girl. THIS guy is the REAL DEAL. He has no such words. Just love, love ,love. The '60s were all about LOVE, baby. You had to be there.
@ProdigyBowlersTour4 жыл бұрын
Their first hit was "Along Comes Mary." But they are probably best remembered for this classic, "Cherish." It and "Windy" were their two biggest hits, both peaking at #1 on the charts. "Never My Love"was another ballad like this that became a top ten hit. When I think back on The Association, it reminds me of another group from this same era called The Happenings who had a great hit called "See You In September," a song about saying goodbye to your girlfriend or boyfriend at the end of the school year and hoping you'd see them again when the next school year starts in September. The Happenings had another hit with the old standard called "I Got Rhythm." By the way, you commented (as many reactors have about songs from this era) that it was "short." Back in the '60s, almost all hit singles were 3 minutes or less. In fact, many were closer to 2:30. It's because most top 40 radio stations, which at the time were AM stations (before FM became a big thing) played about 18 minutes of commercials per hour. So in order to play upwards of 10-12 songs per hour, the songs had to be short. Today, most music radio stations limit their commercial load to around 10-12 minutes (except on the morning shows where they make most of their money and will often run up to around 16 minutes of commercials and only play about 8 songs per hour while the morning personalities chatter on about this and that). If I recall correctly, "Cherish" was one of those rare songs at the time that clocked in a little north of 3 minutes at around 3:25. By the late '60s when album rock started to become a thing, it was common for record labels to release an edited-for-radio version, commonly referred to as "the short version" of songs to keep them within a reasonable length, while you could find "the long version" of the same song (the unedited version) on their album. But I believe the 3:25 length version of this sound, found on the album, was the same length that was pressed on the 45 RPM single records that top 40 stations played. I spent about 25 years as a top 40 radio disc jockey and played this record on the radio more times than I can possibly remember.

India, your analysis of this is profound! Especially given that its from the heart and inner voice of a young man. I think most of us guys can attest to that. The Association is one of the forgotten pop groups of the 1960's who had a string of hits on AM radio. Listen also to their breezy hit "Windy," also "Along Comes Mary," "Everything That Touches You" and "Six Man Band." Uh ... mind if I dedicate this song to you ... ?

"Cherish" was about being obsessed with a woman he will never have under any circumstances. The reason why it was so short because radio didn't allow airplay for songs that were over three minutes long at that time! I would recommend checking out other songs by The Association: Requiem for the masses, Everything that touches you and Six Man Band. They were also multi-instrumentalists who either wrote or cowrote some of their own songs, and all group members sang lead.

The Association didn't play the song at their recording when it was recorded. The song was recorded by Wrecking Clue in LA recording studio but the recording setting turned to be able to work and was a big hit. It is still evergreen in 2021. Sophisticated chorus, meaningful lyrics, the descent arrangement, not only as a soft rock but more in depth meaning in the lyric. Forget about Barry Manilow's version or any other guys' version of this song. The Association is only one deserving the song's value.
@MBC1955 Жыл бұрын
Whilst the band were basically persuaded out of playing on their own records in favour of the Wrecking Crew and other session musicians, that was only from the third album onwards: this was all their own work.

Cherish To love someone to love the way they move, the way they act, the things they do, to long to hear what they have to say. If that person comes in a beautiful package then more people want the package, Not the person. To watch that person in a beautiful package choose a package over content is deflatingly sad. "Never My Love", The most beautiful thing to tell someone you love. Please react & listen to every word, How would you react if someone you loved said it to you...
