Larry Ramos was groundbreaking. From his ukelele appearance on Ted Mac, to being the 1st Asian American to win a Grammy with New Christie, to being co-vocalist on 3 of the top singles in the US charts in the late 60's. And that smile!

I've seen The Association in concert 8-10 times (but the original 7-man band only once). Dec. 4, 2010 on Long Island , NY was the only time I ever saw Larry play his uke onstage. He used it for one particular song, and I swear that he seemed to be having more fun than I ever saw him have, before or since. A little later on, he played it again in another song. I got the feeling that it was because he'd had so much fun playing it earlier.

Way "back in the day," I toured with Climax, after we recorded a song called "Precious and Few" in 1971. At his home in Laurel Canyon in LA, I was privileged to meet one the originators of The Association, only a couple of years ago. Many people don't know that they were the first group to open the Monterey Pop Festival. We both laughed out loud when he told me that his group was ALWAYS confused with us, then I got the chance to tell him how much I loved, "Cherish." I thought they were one of the most talented, innovative groups of the era. Thanks for posting this video of marvelous group.

Fil, you seem way too young to be this hip to the Association. I never paid much attention to them, until Fall of 1968. I had a girlfriend at the time who was attending Michigan State University, and she got tix to an Association show on the campus there, so, you know, I went, not expecting much. The show was in a big field house with a dirt floor. The Association ripped the place apart. They got SUCH a good sound live-especially on vocals--it was hard to distinguish from their studio sound. I also remember being a bit stunned at how many radio hits they had in their quiver; they just played one hit after another. I hope the surviving members are all rich and retired these days, and just playing for the fun of it.

The Association is one of my all-time favorite groups. They never made a big deal of it, but Larry Ramos was pretty much the only Asian American in a rock group at the time. I watched the original video along with their lip synch of Windy, and what struck me as amazing was how Larry and the other guy singing lead were on pitch and blended so perfectly.

Courtesy of a co-worker who was best friends with Terry Kirkman's wife, I one day had the great privilege of spending some time with Terry. For those who do not know, Terry is the fellow on recorder, who wrote the famous "Cherish" and the magnificent "Everything That Touches You," "Requiem for the Masses," and "Six Man Band," among others. Terry was extremely gracious and talked about some of the early days of the group, as well as one of their original proposed names, "The Aristocrats," which he told me was based on the punchline of a dirty showbusiness joke, the telling of which he unfortunately never got to. Terry is a very well-spoken, well-read and erudite man, and we discussed everything from the novelist John Dos Passos to unreleased Association material. But he was actually more interested in learning a bit about me and some of the motion picture cameras I was fiddling with at the time than talking about himself. He did enjoy discussing some of the church and classical music he had done, which he said was refreshing because "it has nothing to do with being hip or cool, making money or being in sync with the times." This is no secret, or telling tales out of school, but like many groups of the 1960s, the Association had spent much of their earnings on chemical compounds of various sorts, and Brian Cole, the great bassist and vocalist for the group, succumbed to a heroin overdose in 1972 at age 29, leaving behind three children. When I mentioned Brian to Terry, he nodded silently, and a pensive and faraway look appeared in his eyes as we shared a moment of quiet contemplation. At the time I met him, Terry had dedicated his life to helping others as a drug and alcohol rehab counselor in the San Francisco Bay area, and I've no doubt he carried a lot of Brian in his heart in his efforts to help others. Just before he left, I was still so awed by our meeting that I said, "In my most secure moments I still can't believe I'm spending those moments with you," which is the opening line of "Everything That Touches You." He looked at me somewhat moved but also a little embarrassed that despite our man-to-man conversation together, I was still a bit of a fawning fan. But I just couldn't help it. To this day he's one of my musical heroes.

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, the Association was a favorite. But the best memory was later '70's, I was married, small children had been put to bed and Father Michael (and Irishman through and through) had come to dinner. Dinner was over and we were in to the drinking portion of the evening. I was going through our albums (33's) and when I said "The Association", an inebriated Father Michael said, "Oh, play Cherish. It reminds me of Leslie". My little dog was hanging onto his foot, growling as he bounced it up and down, stretched out on the couch as he was. I put the song on, expertly placing the needle on the record player down exactly at the beginning, something that we learned to do in those days. As the song began to play, Father Michael raised his glass, lay his head back and said, "Oh, Leslie". He would never tell us about her except that she was a high school sweetheart. Those were the days, my friend.

Along Comes Mary is my favorite Association song, and in my top 10 all time favorite songs. It is also one of the most difficult songs to sing. Very fast paced at around 144 BPM, every chorus is different and the phrasing is an absolute tongue twister. Also the breathing control needed to sing ACM is off the charts. And Yester pulls it off perfectly. Love this tune. Great analysis as always, Fil.

When we met, I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks Whose sickness is the games they play And when the masquerade is played the neighbor folks make jokes At who is most to blame today And then along comes Mary And does she want to set them free and let them see reality from where she got her name And will they struggle much when told that such a tender touch of hers will make them not the same? When we met, I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch And when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed And flaccid kids are flung across the stars The psychodramas and the traumas gone The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars And then along comes Mary And does she want to see the stains, the dead remains of all the pains she left the night before Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies and make them realize their urgent cry for sight no more? I'm currently 72, and have seen plenty of great concerts in my life. The first one to simply astound me, though, was the Association opening for the Lovin' Spoonful at the Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois, 1967. Both bands played and sang exceptionally well, a great variety of song types, intricate arrangements instrumentally and vocally, and with energy not born of volume. It was a magical time for music, sure. My favorite song of the Association, heard that night in 1967, which I think has never gotten its just due, was written by, he was called at the time, Gary Alexander. "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" -- it still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it now and then, when that zither (or whatever it is) does that sudden upward glissando at the peak of the steadily intensifying section where the singer claims he is "finally free". That's not a sign of a manufactured group, these guys were GOOD -- THEY wrote, arranged, and played that music. I think we, and by that I mean the record-buying masses of the time, were too eager to dismiss groups like this, as the louder, more aggressive, more "serious" bands grabbed the headlines and the attention of the rock press (especially R. S.), aided and abetted by the "music industry" in pursuit of the big bucks. Thanks, Fil -- you and Rick Beato are the best, your genuine enthusiasm is infectious and I learn something watching your videos every single time.

Thank you, Fil, for covering the Association. Their sound & legacy are close to my heart. Btw, there is film & sound of them ACTUALLY playing this song live at Monterey Pop, 1967. It's here on KZbin, just punch it in. They were supremely competent instrumentalists, only confirming your assertion that true live performances were marginalized in favor of a pre-recorded track BECAUSE of the stage setup time and effort expense, all that miking, sound check. Sad that they would never realize how much those young audiences would never have cared if the sound was a bit off. I know there were (are) union concerns, but who gives a shit.

I loved their music and had several of their albums. I never followed the band, I just listened to their music. I am so glad you did Along Comes Mary. It is one of my favorites, along with Everything That Touches You. Cherish is a beautiful song, but it was played to death. Cherish, Yesterday, Color My World are three masterpieces that I can do without hearing the rest of my life.

Hardly any mention of Jules, who was the central member, except for the current "nostalgia version". He left for a period, around 1967; apparently this cool Smothers Brothers gig was during the hiatus. Yes, Fil does an amazing non bullshit, non Readers Digest analysis of the greatness of the 60s and 70s, for a guy of his age.

@@Bill_Woo And what's really cool is that when Jules rejoined the Association late in the '60's, they just said, "Sure, come on in!" apparently, no jealousy or Larry's-doing-your-old-job bullsh*t. There's a video of them from 1970, LIVE, even instruments it seems, playing "Dubuque Blues" with Jules on guitar & lead vocals and Brian Cole on bass and close harmony during verses. In the background further upstage are the other FIVE members of the band. Jules wrote the song, I believe. Interesting voice, a lot like Paul Simon's.

I always loved the harmonies of the Asssociation from their beginnings. I really appreciated them in the 80s when I got to see them in their "revival" tour with the Rascals and..? I sat through back to back shows at, of all places, the Wild Animal Park outdoor concert area in Escondido, Cali. Certainly not the same group of players, but the harmonies were the same. What a delight..! Could it have been the cooler of beers with me? I care not...

One of the most fascinating singers you may wish to check out was Tony Burrows, who had one hit wonders in the 70’s, as a singer in five different bands, which is unheard of. My Baby Loves Lovin by White Plains, Love grows where my Rosemary goes by Edison Lighthouse, United we Stand by Brotherhood of Man, Gimme Dat Ding by the Pipkins and Beach Baby by First Class, were all sung by Tony Burrows. He was also the backup vocalist to Elton John on Tiny Dancer and Levon. An incredible singing career that most would have never heard of.

The basic group had the same six or seven members during the 60s and 70s. Later as people retired hired hands took their places. However, they maintained the same lineup pretty much through their heydays. Jules Alexander was in the original band and left for a while, but was back near the end of their career (when the band was 7 men). Bassist Brian OD'ed in 1972.

There was a piano in the room were we were talking to Jim Yester and he went to the piano and play a little bit of Never My Love and he has a beautiful singing voice in person. They were all very nice to us. I seen them a few times. I'm not that good with music but I not sure how they sounded but I really enjoyed seeing them everytime. The last time I saw them was a couple of years ago a Happy Together tour with the Turtles. It was Jim,Jules and Del. Jim's voice was more aged but it was so nice to hear him sing in person. And I have Terry Kirkman for a Facebook friend. He just popped up in my people you should know so clicked and he friended me. Not in wildest of dreams
