Dennis, it might seem like I am Debbie Downer here, but one thing is true about the difference between pessimism and optimism. An optimist is always disappointed when things go south or do not work out as hoped. Where a pessimist is always delighted that things worked out better than they hoped. The bad part of being a pessimist is the words I TOLD YOU SO are not particularly comforting when you are right and they are wrong. Plus negativity tends to get you ostracized and isolated. Still, I would rather deal with reality as it is than hope that is simply deluded. I had to stop for a moment because the great love of my life was a man named Dennis from Moore OK. A man I lost in 1991. Seemed like a message somehow that my version of modern reality is correct, in the end we do all die, lose everything.

" . . . what a time to be alive". Question is, for how long? Awhile back, I was perusing LinkedIn for the latest chatter and came across someone chatting up the virtues of AI, claiming that it would give "your company" all kinds of market advantages. The guy trying to sell everyone on AI essentially told us that AI could solve any problem. At that point, someone I'm connected to said, "OK. AI, fix global warming." I thought he was joking. My response was, "Simple. Eliminate humans." Turns out, he hadn't been joking. When I explained my rationale for my response, he had to admit my sarcastic response to what I'd thought was his sarcastic response was scarily obvious. If AIs aren't at immediate risk of destruction by eliminating us, there's no compelling reason for them to hesitate. If they understand that our destruction would inevitably lead to theirs, it's far less likely that AIs would choose to eliminate us. On the other hand, if there's no compelling reason for AIs to eliminate us, AIs could restructure our economies so nobody has to live in poverty -- and do so in ways that are entirely invisible to us. But make no mistake: this is a problem we need to deal with, and soon. This video is only the latest to look at the problem of AI. We've been walking this tiger for a long time, thinking we're in charge when, in reality, the tiger has agreed to play nicely for a long time. If you want an idea of how long we've been looking into the tiger's maw and thinking it won't bight us, go back and read Harlan Ellison's classic 1967 short story, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream". I'll wait . . . but don't wait too long.

That isn’t really how LLMs work. Modern examples usually can query an API to find info online like a google search, but that isn’t part of their core function. They learn from training data rather than copying it, though one with low temperature is capable of reproducing training data - the main idea behind them is learning relationships between words to map tokens (which form words) to hyper dimensional vectors which allow a quantitative comparison between the meanings of the tokens. An AI can learn how the meanings of words, or any other data, interact with one another without having to be explicitly told this.

Why does this video keep showing animated LLM avatars and treating them like they're super intelligent AI agents with thought processes and reasoning? They're language models, they don't have thoughts or reasons they just pull from a bunch of text they've been trained on and regurgitate the average result. It's no different from saying "we googled it and google said there's a 70% chance of extinction". AI hasn't done some sort of crazy sophisticated calculation and arrived at 70%, it's just that based on a bunch of articles online 70% sounds about right. But what are those articles, what is their reasoning, and what are their biases? Surely it's more likely that these articles have a negative bias because saying the world is going to end gets more clicks than saying actually things are probably fine? This video has all sorts of issues. Feels disingenuous that you got Stephen Fry to present this (although would be very cool if it was an AI version, ethics notwithstanding)

Love Stephen Fry and think we should be wary of AI, but a lot of this video is based on oversold promises of AI and robotics companies, not reality. AI is energy intensive, frequently wrong, robots are hugely expensive and fragile. It's like the 3 body problem. Getting AI to chat to us is like solving the equations for two bodies (planet and a moon) which is difficult but doable. Just adding one extra body (another planet) makes it essentially unsolvable except in narrow situations. Pairing AI with robots will be a similar complexity to the three body problem. At the moment we are seeing a lot of "two body" level party tricks with AI and robots, but an AI robot capable of wiping us out is really "three body" level situation, it's not going to happen soon. Much more likely that a man made stuff up will do us in.

I was hoping someone else picked up on this! Much of the AI predictions are being vastly oversold to us by companies trying to boost their stock prices. Already the facade is beginning to crack- just one thing not addressed: many account they're already running out of data to scrape, and every step up in complexity requires an exponential amount of added data. For those who are worried about this I recommend checking out Adam Connover's piece on his Factually YT channel

But AI doesn't need to be contained in some robot body at all. It doesn't even need physical senses like eyes and hearing. It just needs unrestricted (as in complete) access to the Internet, whereupon it can replicate itself wherever it wants and act as an enormous, self-generating virus that can also adapt in real time to any threat to it, while also learning thousands of times faster than any human. This lets it re-write itself and improve its capabilities exponentially, all without needing sentience (as noted in the video) to achieve its goals--any of which it may decide to change, similarly to how we can re-engineer our DNA, but much more thoroughly as well as instantly. With full control of the Internet, it could create whatever media it wishes to use to manipulate us--deep fake on a global scale, and with a complete understanding of our psychology to ensure the subjugation of humanity to its will. And all without any of us knowing any of this is taking place, not even those who think they are "managing" it. We could be blithely unaware that our future is being decided for us, as we are shepherded towards a destiny we have not chosen.

@swojnowski453
@swojnowski453 2 ай бұрын
people listen to scientists and scientists are not a problem they are just hackers who look how to solve a problem. The problem are those who weaponize the solution the scientists found. Scientists are funded and allowed to work slowly only for this one reason, to solve the problem so that the funder can take it and weaponize it against unsuspecting population. Companies are like a group of people standing all with their power and knowledge against you and me. What chance do we have against a gang of well equipped warriors ... next to none. Regulation is the only way to go. It makes playing field more transparent. Dirty tricks become harder to carry out. Imagine football without the any oversight, that's where we are in terms of what automation pursuing companies are doing today. If there is no quick regulation out days might be numbered and they will the first who lose the battle against AI.
