The Toyota MR2 is one of my favorite JDM cars ever made. Now becoming a K-Swap icon the MR2 is proving itself to be a great chassis to work with. However what happens when you build the factory engine to its full potential? Today we hop in this 707HP Toyota MR2 that has the power of a hellcat but the weight of a feather. So what's it like driving this monster on the street? Let's go for a drive and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Saturday!

I can't imagine what 700hp is like in one of these cars, let alone 300 (I have a '98 UK spec 170hp NA). I certainly cannot wait to start doing more mods, possibly a build with a 450hp goal, and you (amongst others) have influenced me to get one and I haven't looked back since. Keep up the good work, my man. I'm still hoping someone will let you review their ZZW30 ;)

I ran the crap out of it all the time. It handled so great with the mid motor and all that. I actually gave it away to a friend that needed a car and I had a new truck and just got an old Mustang GT. I still miss it every day even tho now I own a Miata which I love but I don't have the history I have with the MR2. Again thanks for vid, it put a smile on my face.

@RJ mi sure 700hp is ridiculous for such a tiny car but it's fun. I understand where your coming from. I own two mr2's and with proper mods, knowing how to drive an older car with no nannies and having self-control makes all the difference and you will have no issues with snap oversteer.
@jasonk2787
@jasonk2787 3 жыл бұрын
@@matt25675 You can NOT eliminate snap-oversteer from a mid-engined car. You can always add better springs, sway-bars, dial a little negative camber to the rear wheels, bigger tires, etc... to help make the snap-oversteer more controllable. The main key is to LEARN to drive the car in a safe location. Such as, at a track, auto-cross, empty parking lot but, of course with caution on the street. Don't wanna put others in danger if you are not sure of yourself pushing your car to the limit. The snap-oversteer when incountered will flip you around into a tree or another vehicle. Now that being said snap oversteer won't just happen out of nowhere. It's from pushing the car hard and I mean cornering hard mostly to the point where you upset the balance of the car. When you exceed the limits in a turn and "lift" the throttle or "brake" to slow down (a common thing to do in front-wheeled drive and front-engine rear-wheeled cars) the mid-engined car will be prone to the "snap-oversteer." Getting seat time behind the wheel is what makes owning an MR2 so much fun. Got to improve the nut behind the wheel (like me). So, get out there and DRIVE IT! Getting experience and driving your car to learn its characteristics and weak points is always ideal. That's what the car community is all about. Regardless of what car you have go out there and drive it and enjoy it but also learn to respect your car. The mr2 is a Japanese iconic legend but it's not a car for everyone and it's certainly not one of the easiest cars to drive at the limit. Hene the reason every time someone brings up mr2 it's shortly followed by its a "death trap" and good luck with "snap oversteer"

Great overview! ATS builds some great cars! One of the reasons I love my Built MR2, is that level of thrill you don’t get from most modern machines, especially in the price range. Also a “snap oversteer” fix is easy, swapping a 93+ subframe in the rear gets rid of that dodgy handling. That’s what I did with mine and it’s much more forgiving.

Everyone’s emphasis is on straight line acceleration. When you have the confidence to see deceleration and cornering as thrilling as the straights, your eyes will open. Every straight is a drag race and every braking zone is a drag race to slow... every corner the traction is loaded and perfect lines are more satisfying than perfect shifts....

@saladbar21
@saladbar21 3 жыл бұрын
From experience, I can tell you it’s more lift off oversteer. What commonly happens is a person goes into a corner too fast, they lift off the throttle which causes weight to transfer forward and lose grip at the rear tires. The car will start to rotate, and since MR2’s are mid engine with a short wheelbase, they rotate very fast, faster than most people expect which causes them to spin out.

I've been actually considering getting an MR2 of this generation lately; it's one of the few decent Japanese sports cars that still has a reasonable price tag. . . Although after watching this, I wonder how much longer that's going to be the case. The values might start to climb to the point where this becomes another unattainable car like the MK4 Supra and the NSX. Maybe I should stop thinking about it and just jump on it.

Do it. I owned a 1991 turbo and it is my favorite owned car. I absolutely thought the car looked stunning then and still do now. It doesn't AGE! 200hp isn't too shabby a starting place in a car like that either. If you mod it, don't intent to sell it. if you intend to one day sell it, or keep it garaged, leave it stock. I sold mine some 10 years ago (I'm 38) now. Wish I could have kept it!

@@turbotank88 Yes that's what i mean. I never said they own Yamaha but like a sub group working for toyota. They did the same with Ford. With toyota that 5% is actually up to 33 % of the motorsport that toyota owns. So in sense they were making a cylinder head for themselves. Just name brand Yamaha to show their relationship with each other not to own a certain part. Unlike bmw with the A90 Supra. Nothing like the old "Toyota's"
