Quick story if I may (scroll past if bored): I am married to a beautiful, amazing woman, who also came with a beautiful, amazing 9 year old daughter. Love this kid to death, but being a stepdad can be tricky when trying to find common interests. So I get up this morning before everyone, just hangin' out watching your latest video when Ali comes down the stairs and flops down on the couch. She got so into the video. Asking questions, making comments. After it was over I said, "You wanna watch something else?" She said, "More of this guy!" So we just spent the last two hours, just me and her binging a ton of your videos; her choosing each next one. I can't tell you how exciting it was that I found common ground with this little one I love so much and it came from your videos. Thank you for all that you do and the content and inspiration you provide. (P.S. Ali also said that she loves the music in your videos)

that’s the sweetest thing in the world! it took me about 22 years to find common ground with my stepfather…we never really got along, having grown up totally differently, him being a very “regular” person and me being very artistic and deeply analytical, but finally we’re starting to find some ways to interact that don’t piss each other off. i think moving out helped 😂 we’re finding common ground in being responsible and taking care of the needs of those around us, something we do individually for different people now. it’s weird to say it feels like he’s proud of me and for some reason i give a shit! i’m so happy for you that you were able to find something so early on with your stepdaughter! lean into it as much as you can. I wish i had this newfound friendship with my stepfather when I was 9. it would have saved me from a ton of difficulty living at home and mental health issues throughout my teens and early 20’s. maybe it’s time to go out and get a jigsaw ;)

I’m really tired of seeing “make this super simple beginners only” projects made by people with a full shop full of elaborate machines. I’m late to the party here, but you’re spot on! It’s good to push your comfort level, but from a 63 year olds viewpoint, I find that constantly raising the bar has actually pushed me away from my woodshop! When we let a hobby get to the point that it antagonizes us, it’s time to reevaluate! There’s a lot to be said for simple, straightforward projects, and this project is a shining example of one!

Liked the simple one...seemed to be quicker actually with fewer steps. The one with the fancy tools, soon as I saw it on the CNC, was wondering why not do the cutout on the cnc as well, why then move it to the drill press and then use the jigsaw -- have the CNC do the hand hole -- and just clean up with the sander. Not a fan of the grooves, messes with my OCD, non-uniform.

@jkingofthechicken2217 Жыл бұрын
Drilling a hole at the apex of the triangles on the legs will prevent a split appearing there in the future. It's easier to drill the hole first then cut the triangle to it. It's the same reason why airplane windows don't have hard angles. Hard angles accumulate stresses and cause splitting.
@jkingofthechicken2217 Жыл бұрын
Also, when drilling the dowels for the legs don't drill them all at the same angle. If you look at them from the side they should form triangles. This will better resist the top being pulled off.

The super glue tip between the wood glue is a tip I will be using....... everybody talks about the step stool being a "basic starter project" ......been making them for a while and making money too! Poplar wood is popular with it's grain color variations....... I use cherry and walnut for customers who want a "heirloom". The question has been asked several times.....what was the finish you used?

That turned out nice! The jigsaw is my least favorite tool, because my cuts are always out of square, or unintentionally beveled. 😄
@jaymzx03 жыл бұрын
I hate it, too. I can never keep the foot planted squarely on the material, or I try to navigate turns too tightly and the blade just kinda screws off at whatever angle it feels it wants to. Most of my cuts need to be sanded/filed/planed back into square. His comment about the saw pulling itself into the work was interesting. I can't recall seeing that, but maybe it was just my frustration dulling my senses. I think I'll take out a board tomorrow and casually hack it up with the jigsaw just for old time's sake.

David, could you shed some light on the cost per board in the US? Maybe for different species? Any wood where I'm from (northern Europe) seems incredibly expensive. Let alone being able to source anything but construction pine/fir and the occasional pine/fir/oak/beech shelf boards. I love the beech boards but converted to US dollarinos they probably cost 15-20 dollars per meter (lengths up to 2 meters available). I ask because the majority of hardwood dealers here only sell B2B, so they won't even sell to me haha

Real world notes. 7' piece of poplar (enough for 2 stools if you don't jack it up) was almost $60 at HD. As a very new woodworker still in middle of this project, it is not complicated but also not easy due to angles. HD doesn't carry the digital angle finder so I sourced a $10 protractor which worked pretty well once you figure out how it works. Cutting straight lines at an angle with a jigsaw is not a slam dunk. Without a straight cut it is difficult to glue them properly as the wood has dips. If you have a clamp it is also tricky since the clamp is at an angle. If you use the CA glue method you will need to find CA glue which is not easily obtained at standard stores. If you use Gorilla super glue as a stand in for CA glue and have to manipulate the wood at all it may mix with the wood glue and not do as good a job at holding forcing you to use the clamp. You may then issue an F bomb or two and wish this new woodworker project didn't have angles. I ended up using a 1/4" dowel ($1.11) to better fit with my drill bits and make it easier to fit when drilling and not blowing out a side. I still blew out a side in my haste. It's a good idea to mark the length of the dowel you are installing or it's hard to know if the dowel has inserted the full length of the drilled hole. If the size of the drill bit is very close to the size of the dowel it is not a slam dunk to install the dowel and once it is partially installed it will not be easy to remove and start over. My 6th grade wood shop stool is almost done and I will use a round over bit on my router to make it look a bit more finished but doing is significantly different than watching and there are many many parts which are tricky to the new wood worker. I'm going to tackle a second stool with the remainder $30 of wood with my table saw and a bit of experience to see if it goes any better.
