Well Pete, you'll never know how nostalgic, not to mention emotional your walk was to me. As you know I spent my entire youth travelling the leafy lanes of the UK with my Romani/Gypsy parents exactly like the one you walked today. You brought back so many memories both good and not so good from my past. Thank you Pete. The May Blossom is just blooming in my village here in Spain and even that brings back many childhood memories too,

I made (as per hedgerow medicine) hawthorn tincture, young leaves are good in salads too. Made up "green sauce" (mix of nettles, dandelions, clevers, hogweed - must be hairy one, non hairy is hemlock & highly poisonous), salt, pepper, water/or stock, nutmeg etc cook 5 mins, liquidise, serve with potatoes and eggs (or improvise). 10 years fell off me! But must drink more in a day, cos nettles and dandelion draw water out (diuretics). Oh and garlic mustard too (just few, cos it's bitter). Just an idea, why not make Pete's version

I just started with one or two easily-identified wild edibles and expanded from there. Success breeds success. I highly recommend Adam Hartigan for his expansive knowledge and superb videos on identifying and using wild edibles and medicinals: www.youtube.com/@LearnYourLand

That was very enjoyable Pete. Love your “out and about” videos. What a lovely park that is. I would like to try harvesting and cooking some nettles. I love dandelions, but usually only eat the greens. I will for sure add in the flowers now. One thing I always look forward to in spring is fiddleheads, though I usually just buy them local. Here, people call the wild garlic “ramps”. I’ve seen the hawthorn fences before and wish we could do something like that here but we don’t have hawthorn. I’ve always wanted to try building a wattle fence though. I think that both types of fence are brilliant. Here in Northeastern Vermont, US, we’re about 2-3 weeks behind you. We’ve just lost most all of our snow but still some in the woods and the ice is retreating on the lakes. Trees are budding, but the grass and ground plants are only just waking up. The barn swallows have just started building their nests in the barn. Their continual flitting in and out is a constant source of entertainment for my dog. We’ve had about a week of very unseasonably warm (hot, really) weather and the ponies are very eager to be rid of their heavy winter coats. Mountains of hair with every brushing and plenty more to come! It’s quite amazing though how fast it will change and everything will green up and grow like mad once it starts. Thanks again for a wonderful walk in your part of the world. I just loved Wales when I was there many years ago. It was in May and it was gorgeous!

If you just harvest the nettle tips you will ensure its tasty and tender, they can get coarse and fibrous as they grow taller. Dandelion flowers are about 140 x more beneficial than the roots or stalks and leaves. If you deep fry them in batter they make a great snack. I also add them to teas, soups and stews. Yes my friend Emma in Nova Scotia calls them ramps. You write so well in almost musical prose, you should pen a book!

@@LazyCookPete Thank you! I will definitely be harvesting the dandelion flowers from now on and appreciate the tips on harvesting/preparing the nettles.

Why is it called is it called gypsy lane..plus the best wild garlic you can find is usually growing by small Streams or close to water
@LazyCookPete

It has been called Gypsy Lane for as long as I can remember. I first came to live in Rhyl in 1964. I have no idea how it got its name. Perhaps it was a frequent haunt of Romany travellers going back in time. Yes ramsons are often found near water.

Mum's got a load of ramsons in her garden, and did some lovely chicken Kievs the other day with them. When I was young I actually tasted lords and ladies, or cuckoo-pint. I will never forget it! It was like swallowing a ball of pins. Do not recommend!
@LazyCookPete

Cuckoo pint can be deadly because it contains raphides of oxalic acid like black bryony and deadly nightshade, it is to be avoided at all costs.
