I’m sorry to hear that you find yourself supporting evil fascism by playing a historical wargame. Thank god we have Midwinter Minis to educate us on why we are despicable. JK, Bolt Action is great. Definitely give it a look and if you’re interested in playing Japanese the Island Assault starter set is a good deal. It gives you enough stuff to play and if you buy a second copy of Island Assault you’ll have plenty of Infantry and Orders Dice for both sides.

I also recommend the awesome low point cost combo of a regular Type 95 Ha-Go in the tank slot, and a Type 92 Tankette in your armored car slot. That's 2 armor 7 whips. Turn the turret around 180 on the Ha-Go, and you got twin MMGs, and the Type 92 has a MMG, and a HMG, plus the Recce special Rule. Low Point cost, highly effective!

While most people do the usual Banzai melee builds, you can for sure make them a shooting army. And even when you’re playing them that way, you can still fall back to charging in if need be. It’s not like you suddenly lose those abilities.

Love the Grenadier squads they are a sort of cheap multi launcher if they have 2 or 3 Type 89 knee mortars. As you can split fire them since they are indirect weapons.

No problem my good man! I recommend building 50-60 of your infantry with Rifle, making sure you have a few of them as Rifle sgts. Then use the rest to build some specialists, e.g. 3-4 LMGs, sniper, officer, a few knee mortars, 3 lunge mines etc

@@MordianGlory Thank You for advice. Thats im going to do. Also i forgot to mention i got Type 97 tank. Ps. One of boxes is SNLF. I never planned to add them to my army but they was 45% discount so i have to buy them. Should them make as SNLF or regular infarntry. (i know how nave get along with army and i dont know that mix can looks silly)

While I do not play BA, I’ve heard that the IJ are quite tricky if not outright bad due their lack of tanks and big guns. So it is nice to hear some upsides and way to play the army. It might not be a force for me personally, but I do respect the play style.

They got plenty of big guns every thing from heavy mortar to light/medium/ and heavy howitzer and then even the devastating 320mm spigot mortar. where it is a heavy mortar but uses the 4 " template and penetration/damage profile of the heavy howitzer but with the range of the heavy mortar, then it has the very nasty 6 D for pins but you add 2 extra so say you roll a 4 for pins then you add 2 and so it is 6!!!!! Not many things out there that can shrug off a potential 8 pins. I have one and used it twice and almost pinned out a Pz III (gave 7 pins on a regualr) and destroyed a 12 man veteran USMC squad because I took half and gave 5 pins so the morale test was a flop when he rolled a 8

IJA are tricky when you try and play them as a "normal" Bolt Action faction, like Germany or US. But once you start to understand them they become incredibly powerful. My Japanese list is band from the group I play with because people got so sick of getting stomped by them

They are fun, I've used the ABC rule, staying highly mobile is a game changer. Hit them with a trident of three fronts, and always be on the move. Force your enemy to make choices, and soon they may make a wrong choice, then strike!

i mostly lost trying to charge my (one and only so far) enemy, who mostly plays germans. my army gets mown down very quickly when i try to close the gap, especially in the last few inches on reaction fire. granted we are both new players, so maybe japan is just harder to play properly (for beginners) or it might just be me. however i came around on support weapons when i realized how cheap my options are and i started just building a cheap rifle defensive line and dealing damage almost purely by bombardment and support weapons, which finally secured me some wins. my strategy is basicly bombarding the F out of him with cheap support units, forcing him to come to me, and when he gets in range i can banzai from out of cover (ideally). id be interested if or how much special theatre units are frowned upon though, since im using them to pad out my gunline (for example IJA MG section, which are not included in the base army book). my current list looks something like this: Second Lieutenant +1dude (vet) 5 Grenadiers with 1 light Mortar (reg) 12 Basic Infantry (reg) political Officer (inex) medic (vet) 2x12 militia (inex, green) maxed(11) MMG section (reg) med mortar +spotter (reg) 2x lunge mine (inex) 20mm AA (reg) or 70mm infantry gun (vet) T92 Tankette (reg) ho-ro (reg) in total i have something like 48 rifle dudes, 2 mortars, 1 howitzer, 1 MMG, 1 HMG+MMG and a 20mm (or another howitzer) + cookies edit: also i got the ho-ro and t92 tankette thanks to your older army list videos and i really like them, so thanks :3 i also love the 70mm infantry gun, its cheap even as veteran and a very tough call. its not super dangerous, but its an absolute workhorse if it lives long enough, very hard to kill with gunshield+vet. so my opponent always has to decide wether he wastes a big boy gunshot on it (like medium anti-tank or something like that) or tries to ignore it. absolute MVP unit, love it

I played my first game with them in a demo game with 500 pts from Island Assault, against a small US army. I forgot about this video, and played them like normal. With my sheer numbers, I manned to pull ahead before I had to leave. This gives me some things to think about.

banzai charges and other similar tactics worked quite well against lesser foes like the chinese or any disorganised enemy , problem for the japanese was that they never achieved enough fire superiority over the americans in order to make this work

Quite funny. I already purchased Japanese before watching this. Except for buying the Japan half of the island asualt set, everything else purchased was boxes of infantry, artillery, weapons teams. Massive unwieldy infantry units. I do have a combined arms unit, vets, paras if necessary, added a light tank and armored car. I prefer cheap armor where needed. Havent played them yet but in my head and on paper they will hopefully preform with the right strategy/tactics with mortors, arty etc and virtually no infantry upgrades except boosts like flags etc. PIN, PIN PIN. ASSAULT, ASSAULT, ASSAULT! Wish me luck 🤞

LMGs are historically accurate in the squads even if they were crappy light machine guns. Note I saw no warnings on not being "that guy" by bringing squads of spearmen backed up by Ho-ros and heavy artillery. Biggest cheesedick army in bolt action. I have seen people simply walk away in tournaments rather than waste time playing these guys.

If you prefer cool equipment, the Germans are definitely the faction for you. In the Late War they get so many different bits of equipment that it's not uncommon to see little to no basic Riflemen in their squads! If your more into the allies I suggest the US Marines, by the late war every solider is packing an SMG, shotgun or BAR 🇺🇸

@@MordianGlory yes indeed! I have a small collection of US Paratrooper and Early-mid war German blitz/occupation 😁. Pz IV and Stug III is the hook for my interest for WW2 armor. US Marine is interesting, but I keep the theme on Europe war for now. Its the 40k guards that start tempting me at the moment. *edit for typos & details.
