how does this work on large/complex projects?

Alice is really more designed for large/complex projects. It's the same philosophy as with a small project. The more variables there are in the project, the more options the software has to find better schedule plans (with shorter timelines, lower costs). As long as the time is put in before hand to set up all the restraints properly.
