It's easy to record electronic drums, right? Sure...if you can get past cable/signal routing, MIDI mapping, software, latency, and a ton of other little "gotchas" that eat up the time you should be spending on playing.
ROUTING DIAGRAM (new for 2020): chadedwardmusi...
The key to getting the most out of your electronic drum kit is creating a versatile, efficient, and effective workflow. In this video, I share my "always on" workflow that allows me to have my Roland V-Drums ready to practice, write, or record at the push of a button. I no longer spend time moving stuff around, connecting wires, or remembering how something should be configured. In this video I walk you through how I configure my drums and home studio to get this level of flexibility.
It doesn't matter whether you're using something like the new Alesis Strike Pro, a mid-level Roland V-Drum kit, or even something like an old entry-level Simmons kit. This workflow will work for you.

Thanks for taking the time to explain the process. I love playing my drums at 72. I had a SONOR acoustic set since 1980 but was so loud it annoyed everyone so I didn't play it. Purchased a Roland TD-17 a few years ago and was amazed at the sound. It will be a while before I buy the gear you are describing, but I know a little more about what is required. Thanks again.

If you guys really don't want to take the time to watch, here are the steps: Long USB/MIDI out from your e-kit to your computer, get drum software like Superior Drummer and map your drums as a MIDI device to control it, long headphone out from computer to your drum kit aux-in/headphone amp/mixer, mouse/keyboard at your drum station, optional stereo out from e-kit to your interface for scratch audio recording. Hook it all up in a semi-permanent way so you never have to worry about fiddling with cables again. Now just enjoy a dedicated e-drum recording workflow that gives you tons of flexibility in post production and allows you to focus on performing.

I have connected these with VST plugins and they are working just fine , but what if I want to use the sounds from the module itself? I think there is an option "midi" option in the module called as "Local Control" on or off ? I have put those on but the MIDI audio from the module is not being heard?

I tried recording onto a windows machine using reaper and thats when I learned I also needed a vst like ez-drummer. As a typical person that just wants to hit the ground running, I thought the only easy (but expensive) way to do it was to just buy another mac and run logic since it didn't appear to need any other software like ez-drummer. But 3k is a tough pill to swallow when for that kind of coin I could probably mic up my acoustic kit.

Alright, so I'm having an issue with my Roland TD6V Module + FORE MIDI to USB interface cable. I'm using SSD5.5 free on Cakewalk and although the samples are great sounding, I get a lot of latency in my headphones and the response is inconsistent (soft and hard stick hits). I tried downloading the TD6V drivers to hopefully get my module recognized in Cakewalk but the Roland site says it's only a module update and when i click it, it says "page no longer available". I tried everything, from hardware I/O buffer from 256 - 128 - 64, to lowing and raising the sample rate and buffer size, and also turning off my Local Control on my module. I wanted to buy a Drum VST soon but i wanted to get this figured out before i do end up needing an actual midi 2x2 interface or something else. Please anyone who can help, chime in!

In the VST, your pedal should be assigned to a note that clamps your hh. It can get a little tedious, but it's probably easiest to just test each note.

does using stereo outs vs mono out make a difference when using an electric drum kit
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what context you mean, but it's a huge difference in sound quality. In a recording situation you never want to use mono line out from your drum kit if you are recording audio from it. Playing live may be a bit more forgiving because smaller venues might mix your kit to mono anyway.

@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 2 жыл бұрын
@@YOUARESOFT. 🤘 happy to help. It might not sound different if you have both recorded tracks panned center and/or your interface is centering them. When you pan the tracks left and right, you should hear a massive difference in sound. If you already have everything panned and it still doesn't sound any different, I'd take a close look at the visual waveforms on the recorded tracks. They should look a little different. If they look exactly the same, then it could be that your drum module is sending a mono signal over both channels. That's more of an equipment-specific issue that I probably couldn't help with. Anyway, hope that helps & best of luck.

Hey! I love the video, and I will be experimenting with this stuff shortly. One question I have is this: I am also using Sonar Pro, and I was just using my headphones to my laptop headphone jack and getting my sound from the DAW. Is there a reason to not do this? Also, I was having an issue with my hi hat frequently triggering the wrong note, ex. I was hitting the top of the cymbal while closed in a 8th note pattern but occasionally it would cut out or register as an open hi hit hat. This doesn't happen at all when playing through the module itself, only the DAW.
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 1st - if you haven't upgraded to Bandlab Cakewalk, do it! I was annoyed that it's now free because I paid for Sonar, but they have fixed so many Sonar bugs that it doesn't make sense to keep using old versions. As far as sound source, it depends. If your "sounds" from the DAW mean the drum sounds from a plugin, then I do recommend routing your drumset's line out signal to your headphones because almost all drum software suffers from pretty bad latency. Even if it's just a few milliseconds, it can throw off your performance. The module sounds are almost always near-zero latency. Hihat issue - are you sure your module is not seeing the same mis-trigger and just compensating for it? This is just an educated guess, your module is probably designed for your kit and can interpret and correct odd triggering. Drum software takes the raw MIDI signal from any MIDI device, so it's not as forgiving. Also, Hihat issues are common for lots of e-kits, so it's not a surprise. When I have a good take but I have a mis-trigger, I just open up the midi and move the note. Hope that helps.

Ok, so I'm trying to follow what's being said in this vid, but I'm confused because I don't have the exact setup, so things are changing. . - I have a roland UM-ONE mk2 (usb/midi) that I use to connect my module to my PC where I am using a VST (addictive drums 2) and a DAW (Reaper) - I have a small tablet I use to keep music on for playing along to. - I do not have/use a dedicated interface . What would I need to do to be able to use the sounds from the VST and play along to the music coming from my tablet? Is there any way to set it up so I can control the volume/levels via the module or would it all have to be done on the PC?
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Technically you can pipe the output of the VST to your onboard soundcard, but it will be unusable in any realtime application. You really need a dedicated interface to produce the sounds coming out from the VST that you trigger. Even then, you'll be dealing with a little latency, which is why I suggest using the module sounds during the performance while you record the midi. If you're wanting to play a VST instrument on a time-sensitive instrument like drums, I really don't think you'll be able to accept the lag. It's just too distracting. I've seen people get the latency suuuuper low, but when you're playing you still feel it. Hope that helps.
@xh0rsex
@xh0rsex 4 жыл бұрын
@@BeneathVultures I figured out how to do it. - I run the USB/midi from the module to the PC - I run a cord from my sound card headphone input to a splitter connected to the module headphone jack - I plug headphones into the other end of the splitter so I can hear everything. I can record using/hearing the vst sounds in real-time with no latency. I use ASIO for the sound and I use a dedicated sound card (Asus xonar essence stx) not onboard. Maybe that plays into why I can play with no latency.
@jarekcarnelian4284
@jarekcarnelian4284 3 жыл бұрын
@@xh0rsex Do you use a super fast PC? Windows 10, Mac, Linux? If I plug headphones into my dedicated sound card (Asio Driver) and use USB/midi from module to PC then I already get latency from the VST (SD3) over the sound card headphones - but you have your headphones on the splitter. I will try anything that might work but I don't understand why the magic comes from connecting the module headphone jack to the Xonar sound card "headphone input" (as far as I can tell this card has "Full Size Audio Inputs/Outputs" but NO Phono Input) . Before I shell out for another sound card I need to understand what specs it needs. Are you using the Essence STX II 7.1 from 2014? If I get the same card you use, can you confirm how you are connecting to it - did you mean to the Xonar's "Audio Input"? Crazy how complicated something so simple can become! ;-)

Hey Tom, I'm not certain about Reaper specifically. The MIDI protocol is standardized, but how it's implemented isn't always, and sometimes an offset needs to be taken into account. I recently got an Alesis DM6 set in a trade,and I am so disappointed in the fact the wires are all in a snake that clicks into the back of the module. And the snare has the notorious DM6 issue of being WAY too low volume, and will not activate sometimes when hit same time as the hi hat..REALLY annoying but it works for the most part. I was REALLY HOPING there was a way to download,or upload my VSTi drum tones (Ugritones Hardcore set) INTO the module so I dont HAVE TO be playing through my PC and just have the sounds in the module for practice and writing. Is there a way to do this actually? I cant figure it out. I'm still recording with it,so this vid has been helpful..ty..
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Ack! The snake harnesses are the worst! As far as using your Ugritone kit, you can't import them into the DM6 module. I will say this - it's somewhat of a blessing...for me at least. Because we're working with sampled drums, everything is always the exact same sound. No mic placement variation, the mix is usually similar, etc. Since there's no variation, you end up with a sort of tone fatigue where you get utterly sick of playing the exact sounds that you record. Again, just my opinion, but for a proper artistic palette, live/practice instruments shouldn't sound exactly like the recordings. Us musicians are picky about the weirdest things, right? Haha! Side note, I now have the Alesis Strike Pro and aside from some annoyances, it's pretty sweet. So if I ran my Roland through my interface with midi would it still pick up the Roland module sounds in protools/Ableton or do you have to have drum software when using midi? And without the drum software would the audio sound like crap? Cause personally I think Roland v-drums sound good by themselves. Thanks man! Great vids, learned a lot
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Glad the vids helped, Brian. There's 2 ways you could approach this if you want to use your drum module sounds but need to tweak the performance. You'll need a module that has both midi in and midi out. You record the midi on your computer, make any changes, then run the midi out back to your kit where you can then record the drum module audio outputs with your interface. This method works best when you have line outs for every drum pad and an interface that has enough inputs. Less expensive drums only have L and R out, so you're essentially stuck working with a mixed down drum track. Yuck. The second option is to record the midi like normal and then pump it through something like EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer. Much easier and the result will almost always be better. My advice - don't get hung up on your kit's sounds. They may sound good, but more often than not drum software sounds better and is more versatile. In the end, you just have to decide if it's worth the added headache. Hope that helps.

@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you mean closed hihat sound on your module or in VST software. In your module, that should always be working and would indicate a bad connection, settings, or something going bad in the module itself. In software, your pedal is almost certainly passing a MIDI note with velocity relative to how hard you step on it. In the software, I'm pretty sure you just need to find what note is being sent and map that to the hihat choke command. It's a little hard to be specific without knowing what software and kit you're using. Hope that helps.

Thanks Tim! Ha, it's this amazing mount called Zip Ties. 😆 I've actually since switched over to a small Yamaha mixer that gives more options. In the description of this vid I recently added a link to a diagram that shows how that works. As far as remote recording, I have to deal with that to. You can get something like a USB macro keypad (search that on Amazon) to start/stop/record, but you still need to bounce around, so the most effective option I've found is to just use a wireless mouse. I'm convinced that there's a better way to handle this, but I haven't figured one out yet.

Great video buddy, some questions, i presume less lag with midi compared to usb? right now on my Alesis strike pro se using the outputs from each pad cymbals etc which works fine but wanna get the superior drummer 3, using tascam 16X8 and Logic pro x and in process to buy the 25ft midi cable to get started, have you heard any issues with compatibillity? thanks again
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks Mikael! I haven't heard of any compatibility issues there. Talking raw transfer rates, USB is massively faster than MIDI, but MIDI can travel over longer cables safely. There are other factors that might sway you in one direction or the other, but for most uses, you're almost always better off with USB. MIDI has been optimized and it's reliable so it's not going anywhere, but it's still a super old technology that has limits. Hope that helps. 🤘

@@MikaelMaatta Mikael Maatta Sorry for the delay. Crazy times we're living in. Awesome, yeah MIDI seems like the better option but mapping is SO much easier over USB that manufacturers seem to be pushing that more and more. Glad it's all up and running!

Good day, man! This is awesome! I have an Alesis Nitro Mesh and using Cakewalk by Bandlab. I'm planning to record simultaneously with 8 tracks. One for each pad. 1 track for each cymbals, 1 track snare, 1 track kick drum(bass), 1 track floor tom, and 1 track for hi hats. How can I record a drum track simultaneously in Cakewalk using the Alesis Nitro Mesh? Or do you think it's easier to record multitrack by using Ableton? Thanks!
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There are so many variables that I don't know if this all applies, but I'll give it a shot. Easiest way I've found is to plug in via USB MIDI, load up some kind of drum plugin like EZ Drummer, Superior Drummer, etc. map the input of the plugin MIDI track to your Nitro kit, use the program's individual pad assignment to make any adustments (e.g. make sure the right drums are triggered), arm the MIDI track, and hit record!

@BeneathVultures 2 жыл бұрын
If you mean you want to record 8 audio tracks, that requires individual outputs for each track. You won't be able to do that unless you have something like the Strike Pro kit that has audio out for each main drum track. :\

The verbal explanation of your cable routing is kind of confusing, do you have a drawn out diagram to see? I'm using a Roland TD-17, a laptop, Presonus AudioBox 22vsl interface, and Addictive Drums 2.

@@BeneathVultures Wow! Thank you so much for the quick response with a nice diagram. Now here is something for you to ponder. I have a combination drum kit. I combined two Roland kits into one setup. The main kit is a TD-17KV the secondary part of the kit is a TD-11. I use the TD-11 for extra cymbals, roto toms, and a second bass pedal--no extra snare or hi-hat. Both modules are being used. Both modules have a USB out and only a MIDI OUT not IN. The question I have is ,...Is there a way for me to have both kits recognized as one in my DAW (FL Studio 20)with Addictive Drums 2? I have a picture but I could not figure out how to post it here.

@@chuckh5722 , this is all theoretical and will take some trial and error, but I'm pretty sure it's possible. Map the midi devices to the same input channel that your software drum kit is on. You will probably have to remap one kit completely. That's the most info I can provide on this. It's logical...I just haven't tried it.

What is it with metal and Sonar Cakewalk? Haha, nearly all the metal musicians I know record with that. Or Reason. Anyhow; are you on the free Cakewalk by BandLab now? How are your experiences with it?

Lol I dunno man, but I know what you're talking about. I'm sure there's a correlation there somehow. I've always loved the workflow with Sonar...and I totally still use reason too. Ha! Yeah, I moved to BandLab and it is F'N STELLAR! There are constant app updates that give new features and fix bugs...and speaking of.they have fixed so many old bugs that Sonar refused to acknowledge.

This was great but what about the actual recording ? Midi sync issues etc ?
@BeneathVultures
@BeneathVultures 4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the actual audio recording of the drums from the drum software? If so, that shouldn't be necessary because the midi will play on the drum software during track playback and will just get mixed down on your final mix. If you experience midi note dropouts (missing drum hits) during playback, you may want to "freeze" the track (sort of like bouncing down the midi to an audio track) to cut down on processing power. As far as midi sync issues, I assume you mean latency. That's just the lag during the live performance only. Notes are still recorded exactly like they're played, but what you hear while you're playing is slightly behind. That's why it's important to mix your drum kit's built in sounds with the track playback during recording and mute the software so the latency doesn't throw you off. Not sure if that's what you meant with your questions, but hopefully that clears it up a bit.

Thanks. It kind of depends on what you're doing with it. You could treat it the same way I treated my module in this video where you record the MIDI to something like Superior Drummer. ...or if you really want to use the sounds on the Tm6-Pro, you can record the MIDI from this module onto your computer, tweak as needed, and then route it back to the module via USB MIDI. Pretty sure you can do that with this module. Then just record the audio out in your DAW. Hope that helps.

Chad Edward - Songwriter/Audio Producer cool that really helps! I decided to go ahead and try working with EZdrummer. Can I break the midi into regular audio channels, or does it have to stay midi ( even if really good samples from EZ) I want to give my costumers full audio channels of the project. Tnx a lot your video inspired me to try out this kind of system 😎😊🥁

I do mention this a couple times in the video. That's why you need a mixer - you combine your module's internal sounds with your interface output in your headphones so you don't have to deal with the drum software's latency when you're performing. Hope that helps.

You make this explanation unnecessarily complicated by adding repeaters and extra devices, with that particular module it can be done with a laptop and headphones, no need for the extra cables , extra mouse, etc.

This is not about being compact or simple. This is about creating a workflow in a dedicated studio with high production rate.

In which case you will really build a dedicated computer, have a drumset that remains stationary and all other peripherals will then be added as needed, that can still be done for relatively cheap, of course the idea is to upgrade as you go based on needs vs wants, that is the mistake that many people do , they spend all of their budget on a single thing then production stops....
