I bought a bluetooth midi adapter for 39 bucks and now I literally only use this with my iOS drum sound modules (got tons of great drum sounds over there). what a beast! No cable at all required to hook up into my iphone or ipad, quite a blessing really. PS: Thanks for your reviews, you were the one who ultimately convinced me to get this :). @@demonicsweaters Wireless BM-A01 Bluetooth MIDI... www.amazon.com/dp/B085DQYW8B?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Seems like it’s out of stock right now but I’ve bought 3 of these over the years for my studio (midi piano drums and foot pedal). They are wonderful and far less expensive than Yamaha’s! I love them! I have seen how you tweaked your sounds and they do sound infinitely better than stock sounds but I was always more interested in using my own so having an efficient midi setup was a must for me. This is perfectly fine! My drums sit on the other side of the room from my iPad generally (next to my computer), and I never need to reorganize a single thing just to record, I can always do it “at a distance”, or grab the iPad and take it with me but not have to worry about any cables or adapters. I'm not sure why you would split the two output jacks. You'd then end up with 4 jacks if I am understanding you correctly. One of the outputs on the Nitro/Surge is mono, I forget which one, but it says if you just look at the outputs, one will say mono. Just use that one and you're golden.

Don't monitor though Ableton, use your interface's direct monitoring feature. Also, you should never use software monitoring in Ableton in general with audio, because it can't compensate for latency if you do. It's kinda strange that way. If you're using MIDI you can monitor with Ableton, but you'll have to set your buffer to at least 128 or lower to have usable results. The faster your processor the lower you can set your buffer.

Hello DS, nice and super informative video. Got a question if I may, I would like to record and use a VST programs like EZ Drums with the Alesis Nitro and have zero or close to zero latency (I tried plugin Alesis to PC using ASIO sound driver but I still have a latency of 6.2ms). Do you think this is something achievable with an audio interfase? I am between Behringer UMC202HD Interfase ($110 USD) and Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen) ($160USD), does both of them could do the job or should I pick one over the other? thanks man!
@demonicsweaters
@demonicsweaters 2 жыл бұрын
with my experience the Latency is more related to CPU than anything else. The faster the CPU you have the lower you can make your buffer, therefor lower latency. USB audio interfaces are also better to use just in general. Both Behringer and Focusrite make good interfaces.

My guitarists and bass player record songs (without drums) onto MP3's, so I can put only the guitars/bass on my MP3 player. That way I can play on my Nitro Mesh to the songs (to learn arrangements at home). Is there a way to record me playing to the songs, recording both me playing *AND* the music on the MP3 player? @demonicsweaters
@demonicsweaters 6 ай бұрын
No, it's not possible with the Nitro... BUT. EZDrummer 3 will allow you to do this via midi connection and it is very worth the price. It is a plugin you can use in Logic that provides a full mixer with each drum routed separately within its own mixer. You can also route each drum to a separate channel in Logic, but the kits in EZD3 sound so damn good, there's very little reason to even do that. The mixer they give you is great and even most of the presets sound amazing.

You can even record MIDI and audio L/R from the nitro at the same time and blend them together for some really cool sounding results.
@demonicsweaters

also, since you already have Logic, it has similar things built into it. They're just not quite as robust as EZDrummer, but some of those kits sound pretty good. Just get yourself a USB A to B cable, plug the drums into your mac, insert a MIDI track and start experimenting.

The mono output sends audio, as in the sounds you hear in the module. The MIDI output as well as the USB output sends MIDI data out, which is not audio. @demonicsweaters
@demonicsweaters 3 жыл бұрын
Either by USB or MIDI cable will work fine, the quality will be exactly the same since it is only sending MIDI Data. The audio latency will depend on the buffer size of your Scarlet which is what will really make the difference in performance. This will vary depending on what kind of specs your system has. Try to set the buffer at 128 or lower.

And what clip/trim level settings are you using going into your audio interface and settings on your recording software with the Nitro?
@demonicsweaters

You set your recording level as you would any other piece of equipment. There is no standard number. You want to get as high a level as you can without clipping or going into the red.

@@demonicsweaters I am new to home recording. Studio One 5 and a Presonus audio interface. Out from the Nitro module stereo into the interface. I recorded some basic tracks last week and were clipping a bit. A friend went through my track and added compression and threshold to alleviate clipping. I’d like to record without having to go through all that everytime. And the louder I turn the module up on the volume control, the more prone to clipping.

you really need to get an amp specifically made for e-drums, or a keyboard amp could work as well. Guitar and bass amps lack the frequency range to really work well with edrums.

I don't think it is even ok to record a drum track like this, using the audio output of the drum kit. Just use the usb midi out to connect to your daw and record midi. You will have the options to play using any sounds you like, later edit and correct midi notes and quantize, and also use separate tracks for each drum and cymbal piece and mix with effects applied separately on each track. You don't even need an audio or midi interface, just connect the drum kit usb midi output directly to the usb port on your computer.

So I think I know the answer to this but I'm still going to ask...I have been playing my 80s drum sound on my Alesis (thanks to you!) to whitesnake, Def Leppard, etc all day today. I have been listening to the real music through my headphones and the music is getting played back through an old phone through the aux jack on the kit. So in my headphones so I can hear the real music and myself drumming to it. I hit record and much to my surprise when it was all said and done (you can see where this is going LOL) all it recorded was my drumming and not the music I was playing to. Suck!!! It seems like the technology wouldn't be that difficult to just record all of the incoming signals but I guess it is? So now unless I do the setup you're suggesting there's no way I'm going to be able to record myself while playing along to the music? (aside from the pre-made songs alesis has in the module already)
