A BETTER WAY to Reset Brother TN-431 TN-433 TN-436 Toner Reset Page Count Brother MFC-L8900CDW

A quick guide to show how to reset the page count on Brother TN431 TN433 and TN436 toner cartridges for the Brother MFC-L8900CDW
Be sure to clear any firmware update found messages before resetting.

Four year later this was a lifesaver! Make sure to press both the back and x button at the exact same time just for a moment, and only briefly press the back button after that and it should work like a charm.

For this to work be sure your computer is not trying to send a job to the printer, by cancelling any documents in the computer's print queue. Then clear any pending jobs in the printer by unplugging the power and plugging it back in. Then the reset procedure worked for me.

FYI, this method also works on the MFC L3770CDW! If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying, perhaps you haven't pushed those two at *exactly* the same time. But worked like a charm! THANK YOU!

Massive save here. We picked up new cartridges, but one wasn't resetting the printer, so we couldn't print and had no other spare cartridges. Did this and boom, we're printing again. Thanks!

Corrected Method: Computer cannot be sending print job to printer, and printer must not be in "Receiving Data" mode to reset toner. My notebook was sending large print job when Yellow signaled "out of toner". Notebook was still sending more pages, and printer was still trying to receive pages. Dozens of attempts to reset failed. To dolve reset problem, I shut my notebook off so it couldn't send print job to printer. Printer still showed it was trying to receive print job. I pulled power plug from printer, waited 30 seconds, then plugged printer back in. On startup, printer was no longer trying to "receive data", but Yellow toner was still out. Then I followed the procedure here, worked first time.

For anyone still here for this, the actual method is: *With the cover open and warning on screen* Hold down back, press the red x. Let go of both buttons and press back again. You don't even need to be quick. Once you let go of the two buttons hit the back button at any time to go to the reset menu.

Thank you! This also works for the Printer DCP-L8410CDW! However, the menu only showed up when I pressed the two buttons only briefly and then pressed the back button briefly. You might have to try multiple times until the menu pops up!

I found that on a brother 8360cw it won't work unless you press the cancel and back simultaneously, then the back button again immediately. Waiting 1-2 seconds is too long.

Isn't the cog used to track how much the toner has been used? How does the machine know how much toner is left in the cartridge if you reset the machine? Does the machine rewind the cog?

Does that make "reset gear and spring" usage obsolete? Just "take cartridge out, refill the toner, put in cartridge again, do the trick as above" ? Basic cartriges are without resetting gear and spring from what I know.

You’re all going to destroy your printers. The rollers built into the cartridges degrade. The ‘toner level’ is more like a degradation indicator for the cartridge roller. Once it’s shot, the toner will leak out everywhere, and the renegade toner will clump onto the hot rollers in the machine and trash them. Repair can easily cost more than the printer. Use this function to finish the urgent print job you’re running, ok, but then GET A NEW CARTRIDGE.

But people say in amazon reviews that they have to reset because if one cartridge becomes empty it isnt enough to replace that one toner only but they have to replace a few of them. So what kind of robbery is it? Or how does this really works around replacing toners? is it enough to replace the empty toner only? Whats the truth?

There will seem to be a bunch of toner still in the cartridge when it says empty, but it’s time to change it. The printer is tracking how many roller cycles it has had. It’s seems wasteful of toner, and like their training to get you to buy toner when you don’t need it, but if that was what was going on, why would the company waste money putting so much extra toner in the cartridges? You’re definitely tossing cartridges that have some perfectly good prints left in them, but they’re also very close to being ready to destroy your printer.

Yeah you can unscrew a gear on the cartridge and reset the page count. This is way better.

the Brother MFC L8690 CDW is the European model - the MFC L8900 CDW the America model . Both are absolute garbage. Brother makes the worse most unreliable copiers ... I bought by MFC 8900- for $780 had nothing but trouble and malfunctioning . It finally stopped working six months after the fact. Brother....: poor customer service, garbage products.
