Lots of negatives about Kennedy get posted, but usually when weather, bottlenecks etc. happen, these guys are right on it. They had only one runway available during a snow event and handled it very well. The largest line up and wait line I ever counted amounted to 23 planes waiting their turn. The ones at the end looked all jumbled up as control was trying to find spaces for them.

Lined up for departure at Tullamarine Melbourne, early evening, only one runway in use for arrivals and departures..was about 5 in the line, and out to the right as far as I could see was a line of lights of incoming flights..it was like watching a really well choreographed dance...with such precise timing, I wondered what would happen if the timing got stuffed up. The answer came a few years later when an aircraft was too slow in clearing the runway, which caused the incoming plane to make a go around, which in turn put him within 1km of another aircraft...it was a great piece of flying..by that pilot..who managed 3 big moments all at once...and 3 plane loads of people all got home safely for dinner.

I appreciate the impossible situation the controllers were in but still that last TWR controller was right on the line of unprofessional conduct with his repeated sarcastic calls. Pilots aren't just sitting there reading a book waiting to talk to ATC, they're very busy updating the company with important information that helps the company get the passengers to their final destination. Remember, many passengers have connecting flights they need to catch at the next stop.

Still though safety has priotity over getting customers on a connecting flight, you can anyways only give certain 100% information about your new arrival time once you're in the air which means if you fly to madrid the ground offices still have 7-9 hours to adjust all the delays and handle them.
