Buy this microscope on AliExpress: goo.gl/XQX6s5 --- An in-depth look into the microscope I use for iPhone modifications, soldering, and other electronics adventures, and how you can buy one from SueMay, the seller I bought mine from in the Huaqiangbei electronics markets in Shenzhen, China.
I've looked and looked and looked, and I totally can't find which Still Untitled podcast episode I was referrring to. Sorry! If you know which one I'm talking about, leave it in the comments. And if I find it, or someone else does, I'll add a pinned comment pointing at it.

The gap between taste and skill... Ira Glass of This American Life fame gave a fascinating interview in 2009 about good story telling where i believe he coined this idea : kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmPafYNmnt-YgKc Adam Savage and Tested have talked on multiple occasion about how anyone creating things experiences this gap: www.tested.com/art/makers/460018-ira-glass-gap-between-taste-and-skill/

Your comment at about 7:02 about depth of field, need for binocular vision, etc might only be an individual preference. At work, I use a Tagarno with a monitor and never have that problem. You need to first position the tip close to the IC and then work your way to the joint. Works for me all the time. One issue I did have with a monitor initially was that if I had it sitting to the side, being able to relate to the workpiece in front of me was somewhat difficult. However once your brain reorients itself with a bit of practice, even this issue soon disappears. Interestingly, we also have a Nikon low power binocular microscope that we used previously. After I got used to the monitor, going back to a direct viewing glass scope was disconcerting.

Another huge benefit of an optical microscope vs a screen based one is eye strain. When looking at a blown up image on a small screen your eyes will wear out insanely fast whereas the optics have eye relief

Haven't looked at microscopes for electronics for a long while but $300 for a non branded scope of that spec seems like a steal! Buying one in the UK is extremely expensive, especially if you want a built in camera too!

This story about the microscope is amazing. Basically you just free advertised SueMay for the world and now she can extend her business. I mean, probably lot more people will buy this m.scope, because you used it. Everyone wins. The internet and social media could do so magnificent things if people would use them reasonably. Great video again.

Your story is inspirational. You can take it two ways, but I've heard most things can be mastered given a set amount of time. I think your advice aligns with that. Put in the time and the effort and you can achieve your goals. The real question is if you really want it. And it's not wrong to realize if something isn't wanted. Good videos. Great production. And you have awesome branding too. Keep up the good work!

Maybe I'm over-engineering this but could you do a single lens microscope and have an array of lights aiming down towards the subject, this way the higher your microscope the different colour it is? So for example as depth level 0(Highest Level) the object is lit by only the highest light(red) and the further down you go the more light sources are introduce and the colour are different? With input-lag, I can't remember the amount used for VR but surely matching or beating that latency would provide high quality results as well? I've got glasses and I've always felt microscopes make it harder for glasses users.

Since it has not happened yet: I'm very happy with a Toolcraft ST-50A station, but this may not be available outside Germany. This is what you should look out for: I highly recommend you get a soldering station, not a simple soldering iron. While irons are great for cables and engraving you name into a piece of wood (DON'T do this with a station!), they are simply too hard to work with when doing electronics. Temperature: it should be fully regulated up to 450C (850F). Normally you will work at 300-350C (570-660F), but sometimes you have to solder on a large piece of metal and that sucks off the heat. Wattage: for electronics work 50W is plenty. You may want 80W if you work with relatively thick cables very often (>2mm thickness). 30W may be a bit on the under-powered side for some applications, while 100W is overkill. Too little can frustrate you and may destroy devices by taking too long, too much will destroy your solder and devices. Solder tips: you want a standardized station. Most of them use the small solder tips with a 4mm hole where you put them on the heat element of the iron, they are approx. 42mm long. The nice thing about this standard is that you don't have to buy the expensive original tips, but you can order a set of a dozen different ones for the same price. Solder tips, pt. 2: you want several different tips. There are the ones with pointed tips (looks like a sharpened pencil) - they are great for very small parts (SMD). The ones where a cylindrical tip is cut at an angle (making an elliptic surface) are the most versatile - you use them for soldering cables, through hole components, connectors, everything. There are different sizes of those - the side is equivalent to the size of the component you solder. There is a flat angled one giving you a very long contact line - it is useful if you have to create a very long line of solder. I have not figured out what the classic "screw driver" like tips are good for if you have the other ones. Accessories: use the copper wool tip cleaner, not the water+sponge one - the latter sucks off the heat and gives the solder time to oxydise again. Use no-clean flux (colophonium) - this does not mean it looks nice afterwards, it just means it does not etch away your PCB. For electronics: use very thin (0.5mm) solder with a flux core - makes life a lot easier. For cables you can use thicker (cheaper) solder. Lead based is easier to work with, but it is dying out (for good reasons). You will need lots of liquid flux. Don't buy it, it is horribly expensive - instead buy an empty eye dropper bottle, fill it with ethanol alcohol (~70% Vol) and add a small piece of colophonium, shake, wait an hour, shake again, done.
